DOE EV-Smart Grid Interoperability Center leverages established capabilities and the embedded controls lab to investigate/develop:

Charging Systems: AC, DC, and non-conductive

Communications Technologies: Software, embedded systems, and messaging protocols

Networks: Infrastructure-related systems.

Vehicle and Component Testing: Harmonize vehicle and battery test procedures.

ANL Activities/Accomplishments supporting EV-grid interoperability

Codes & Standards: Direct support to conductive charge coupler, non-conductive charging, and interoperability standards.

Compact Metrology System: Proof-of-concept device to measure and communicate charge energy.

Smart Energy Profile: Gateway to bridge the existing and future messaging infrastructure used by utilities.

Non-conductive Charging: Test requirements, protocols and standard test fixture for wireless charging systems.

Communication Controllers: Test methods to evaluate power line communication (PLC) technologies that enable messaging between EVs, charging systems and the service provider.



Joint Research Centre Institute for Energy & Transport (JRC-IET)

Integrated European EV/Smart Grid Reference Laboratory European Commission’s research arm combines vehicle testing and ICT in Ispra, IT with battery, component, and new materials testing plus smart grids in Petten, NL.

Vehicle and Engine Emissions Laboratories (VELA): Testing all types of vehicles/engines; legislative and realistic conditions.

EV-EVSE compatibility/interoperability: Connectivity and functionality to ensure safety and code compliance.

EV component and battery testing: Performance and safety validation under typical and abusive operating conditions.

Smart grid simulation: Offline/real-time simulation and component testing; interoperability and communications; mobile lab and field testing; visualization and interaction.

Build-up of New EV/HEV Laboratories: Anechoic chamber (VeLA-9) – Electromagnetic emission and immunity tests.

Smart Grid Simulation – Lab with space for mounting ICT equipment in cars with smart grid simulation container.

Cold/Warm Cell (VeLA-8) – Full exhaust gas analysis; for energy efficiency and HVAC issues in EVs.
