Richard Egarr and the Academy of Ancient

Handel cycle with this dazzling traversal of the Trio Sonatas Op.2 and Op.5. These works, less frequently heard than much of Handel’s output, are brilliantly crafted, exciting, and (above
all) fun pieces of chamber music. The Italianate singing style of the melodic writing is both virtuosic and sonorous. Handel took Corelli’s ‘sonata da chiesa’ model and with
consummate ease, created sparklingly diverse and richly colorful works that are clearly stamped with his own unique stylistic signature.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDComposed to a libretto by Amin Maalouf and premiered at Salzburg in 2000 in a production by Peter Sellars, L’amour de loin was Kaija Saariaho’s fi rst opera. A reinterpretation of La vida breve, a narrative poem by the Medieval troubadour Jaufré Rudel, L’amour
de loin tackles a number of highly topical themes: love from afar, the virtuality of ideal love and relations between East and West. The sensibilities and backgrounds of both Maalouf, a Lebanese-French author and journalist also living in Paris, and Saariaho — both voluntary exiles — brought them together to collaborate to turn a seemingly simple story into a complex story very simply told. On this spectacular new surround-sound recording, Kent Nagano leads the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and a trio of exceptional soloists.

CONCERT REVIEW“A haunting and resonant work, L’amour de loin, the most important offering of this summer’s ambitious Salzburg Festival, is an often transfixing and utterly distinguished work. Idealized love is a well-worn theme, but Mr. Maalouf has found a fresh way to revisit it. Mr. Maalouf’s words invite music, and Ms. Saariaho has provided a lushly beautiful score... Her harmonic language is tonally grounded, with frequent use of sustained low pedal tones, but not tonal. Bits of dissonance, piercing overtones and gently jarring electronic sound spike the undulant harmonies, but so subtly that the overall aural impression is of beguiling consonance. Her evocations of the troubadour songs, with medieval modal harmony and fragments of elegiac tunes, are marvelous.”

Every four years, the Van Cliburn Competition offers the opportunity for a select group of outstanding young musicians to showcase their talent while challenging themselves to reach new standards of artistic excellence. This year’s three winners raise the bar once again. 20-year-old Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii claimed the Gold Medal. Already known in his home country for his refi ned and effortless playing, a webcast of his spellbinding performances at the 2009 Cliburn brought Tsujii to the attention of hundreds of countless new fans throughout the world, while raising his status in Japan to superstar. Blind since birth, Tsujii states his fi rm belief that, “there are no barriers in the fi eld of music.” The youngest participant in the competition, 19-year-old co-Gold Medalist Haochen Zhang gave his debut recital at the Shanghai Music Hall at the age of fi ve. He moved to the United States at fi fteen to attend the Curtis Institute of Music where he is pursing a Bachelor of Music degree. 23-year-old Silver Medalist Yeol Eum Son is considered among the most important artists of her generation in South Korea. She has been a featured soloist with the New York Philharmonic on several occasions, most recently as part of the orchestra’s historic visit to Seoul.

Composed to celebrate the birthday of Queen Anne of England, Handel’s Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne was subtitled ‘Ode for the Peace’ in reference to the Treaty of Utrecht which marked the end of the War of the Spanish Succession. Six years earlier, the 22-year-old composer brought the techniques he learned from writing Italian opera to his sacred music. The result was the powerful, intensely passionate Dixit Dominus. Marcus Creed leads the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin in defi nitive readings of these works, which feature the glorious voice of counter-tenor Andreas Scholl. Scholl has consistently collected the top international awards for his many solo and ensemble recordings (most notably Gramophone Awards for Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater and Caldara’s Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo).

All Zones/ 68 Minutes/ PCM Stereo/ 16/9 AspectThis DVD is not just another fi lmed concert. It is a real movie (conceived, lighted, fi lmed and edited as such). On it, Jordi Savall performs the original orchestral version of Haydn’s masterpiece in the Santa Cueva church in Cádiz (decorated by Goya), where the work was premiered in 1787. The disc includes outstanding bonuses, including “The Seven Last Words of Man,” a spiritual commentary written and read by Jose Saramago, Nobel Prize in Literature, a complete interactive Alia Vox catalogue featuring musical highlights from each album and interviews with Raimon Panikkar, theologist (about the meaning of the Seven Last Words), Jordi Savall, (about the music and the performance) and the Priest of the Santa Cueva Church (about the history of commission to Haydn).

“ Lang, once a postminimalist enfant terrible, has solidified his standing as an American master,” wrote the New York Times in a recent review. Indeed, David Lang won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for the little match girl passion (just released on harmonia mundi) and has joined the faculty at Yale University. Now Lang has scored (Untitled), a major independent feature about a composer’s life. He writes, “Most of the time film music is in the background, setting the mood or advancing the story in a supporting role. This project was different. Because the leading character is a composer, it is a fi lm as much about musical development as it is about character development.” The soundtrack combines music composed especially for the film with excerpts compiled from Lang’s discography on the Cantaloupe label. Edited and produced by former So Percussion member Lawson White, this soundtrack serves as perfect introduction to Lang’s work — a mid-career retrospective of sorts for this composer’s composer.

“ Lang writes music of hard-earned simplicity...voices intertwine, forming piquant medieval dissonances that ring against fields of luminous choral harmony. The atmosphere is at once knowing and pure, like a Pre-Raphaelite painting. Medieval counterpoint and Renaissance harmony hang in air, but so does the tang of today.”

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDBrahms never made a secret of the inspiration he drew from Beethoven’s symphonies, but before he published his fi rst symphony — inspired by Beethoven’s fifth and ninth — he had struggled for no less than fourteen years with it. In the mean time he wrote many more pieces and his Variations on a theme by Haydn are considered to be a preliminary exercise before venturing on to the fi rst symphony. The opening piece of this recording, the Hungarian Dance No.14, goes back to Brahms as a young café pianist, when he and his father earned a bit on the side in bars in the red-light district of Hamburg and where he fi rst heard Hungarian gipsy music. It was this experience that gave birth to Brahms’ lifelong attachment to and admiration for this rich folk music style.

“ Very few conductors can match Fischer’s extraordinary ability to search out and illuminate the most subtle and transient details of scoring, tempi and dynamics without sacrificing dramatic momentum and impact. And very few orchestras, even those of great repute, can equal the ability of the BFO to respond and render so precisely and convincingly their leader’s vision of the music.”

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDManuel de Falla is widely regarded as the most distinguished Spanish composer of the early twentieth century. Although he only composed one piece for guitar, his music is strongly infl uenced by Spanish folk music, in which the guitar plays a central role. For this recording, the Katona Twins have selected and transcribed works in which the infl uence of the guitar was dominant. The Katonas felt that adding percussion, played here by David Garcia Mir, would enhance the rhythmic element that is central to the music of Spain. Also featured are the singing talents of Juanita Lascarro, who made a spectacular British operatic debut as the heroine of Strauss’ Daphne.
SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDIn presenting their sixth SACD sampler, Channel Classics looks back at an exciting eight years since the introduction of Super Audio CD technology. Many people think that SACDs have had limited success in the commercial market but there are actually more releases from more labels with each passing month. In the end the high quality of this format (together with the backward compatibility) is a deciding factor against all other formats. For this disc, Channel has selected nineteen tracks that they feel are most representative of the label’s past year’s releases. These are placed in a random order so that every release has its own distinct fl avor.

The banning of opera performances during Lent in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Rome meant that composers had to turn their attention to biblical subjects. Scarlatti’s work tells the dramatic story of David and Goliath. Whilst the biblical account relays the story in a few sentences, the anonymous librettist of Davidis pugna et victoria expands upon these to create an extensive libretto, with the characters fully developed and explored. Scarlatti’s musical response to the libretto demonstrates his gift for characterization, which acts as a commentary on the unfolding narrative. Performances of thrilling dynamism and instinctive style from Academia Montis Regalis make the strongest possible case for this work.
Howard Shelley’s splendid series of Clementi’s complete piano sonatas continues with a fourth volume containing some of the composer’s most important works. The ten sonatas of Opp. 25, 26 and 33 heard here are all products of a period in Clementi’s life when he was the darling of the London music scene. As well as stunning virtuosity, the works recorded here contain a high degree of compositional originality and forward-looking piano writing. The A major sonata (No. 4) has a curiously nineteenth-century sound. The fi rst movement displays a profusion of melodic ornamentation reminiscent of Chopin. The fi fth, perhaps Clementi’s greatest sonata, was much championed by Horowitz, among others.

Haydn’s Piano Trios are among the most delightful and inventive of all his works. They have a ‘domestic’ reputation, and indeed they were intended for playing at home. Many outstanding musicians of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries never performed in public for one simple reason: they were women. Who knows how many gifted women musicians were denied opportunities that their male counterparts enjoyed? Haydn wrote a set of three piano trios for Therese Jansen, a pupil of Clementi and a pianist Haydn considered to be among London’s finest. The Florestan Trio, with their magnifi cent pianist Susan Tomes, dazzle in this repertoire. Their fi rst disc of Haydn’s piano trios was enthusiastically acclaimed.
Lodewijk Mortelmans (1868-1952) was a key figure in the Flemish orchestral renaissance. He won the Prix de Rome in 1893, and used the prize money to travel to Germany and Italy to broaden his cultural experience. As a music correspondent, he kept his fi nger on the pulse of European musical life. Mortelmans was not musically avant-garde or adventurous. He was aware that European classical music was following a new path, but right up to his death he was unwilling to abandon romanticism. His music is deeply attractive, showing the infl uence of both Sibelius and Wagner. A selection of his greatest works for orchestra are recorded here. Hyperion regular Martyn Brabbins conducts the Royal Flemish Philharmonic in their fi rst recording for Hyperion.

A centur y ago , Richard Runciman Terry re-introduced the wonders of the Renaissance into liturgical polyphony and placed Westminster Cathedral Choir at the pinnacle of the art. Terry was a musical pioneer whose work as Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral between 1902 and 1924 is legendary. The musical roadmap that Richard Terry charted for London’s new Roman Catholic cathedral remains largely unrevised today. Plainchant and Renaissance polyphony are the bedrock of Westminster Cathedral’s sung liturgy-early music is the root from which the cathedral’s musical endeavors have branched for over a century. Also, from Westminster Cathedral’s earliest years, alongside the fascination with early vocal repertory, composers have been commissioned to contribute to the canon. When they have done so, the choir’s antique musical diet has frequently been at the forefront of those composers’ imagination. This disc is an homage to Terry’s work — a procession through a particularly rich section of the church’s year that perfectly illustrates the changing glories of the liturgy.

Few Russian composers could resist setting verses by Alexander Pushkin, and his infl uence on the development of Russian music was indirectly as great as his infl uence on literature. This collection demonstrates the compelling power of the poet, and the beauty of the music he inspired. It is performed by Joan Rodgers, herself an acknowledged master of Russian repertoire, and Malcolm Martineau. Joan Rodgers, one of Britain’s best loved singers, is internationally established in opera, concert, and as a recitalist. After graduating from the University of Liverpool with an Honors degree in Russian, she entered the Royal Northern College of Music where in 1981 she won the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Scholarship.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDFollowing acclaimed recordings of Shostakovich, the third release on the Mariinsky Theatre’s new label features a selection of popular and rarely-heard works by Tchaikovsky, the fi rst ‘professional’ Russian composer. Many of the works for which Tchaikovsky was
commissioned celebrated great state and political events. The Danish Overture was written to mark the marriage of the future Tsar Alexander III to the Danish Princess Dagmar. He was later commissioned to produce the Moscow Cantata and Coronation March as part of the celebrations to mark Alexander’s coronation. The patriotic Marche Slave was written for a concert to raise funds for Russian volunteers in the Serbo-Turkish War. Although the 1812 Overture depicts Russia’s earlier war with Napoleonic France, the piece was actually commissioned for the opening of the Christ The Saviour Cathedral in Moscow. The cathedral itself was built to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Russia’s victory in the 1812 campaign of the wars.

“A tour-de-force.”— CLASSIC FM
Donizetti’s gripping opera Parisina is rarely performed today — even though it was widely staged during the two decades following its premiere. The plot is unusually dark. Parisina, the wife of Azzo, a 15th-century Duke of Ferrara, has fallen in love with Ugo, who turns out to be a child of Azzo’s previous marriage. In furious anger at her outlandish passion, Azzo has his own son murdered, and presents his anguished stepmother with the corpse. This horrifying scenario was just the sort of passionate narrative to set the composer’s musical pulses racing and the opera remained Donizetti’s personal favorite among his works for many years.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDSmetana’s fi rst quartet, subtitled “From My Life,” is semi-autobiographical and features musical sketches depicting parts of the composer’s life. The programmatic content ranges from an expression of the composer’s inclination to the romantic ideals in life and in his music to reminiscences of his happy youth. Completed as he was recovering from illness, Sibelius created one of his most heartfelt scores in the D minor quartet. It is music of reminiscences, of mercurial changes of mood; melancholy but never despairing. At the heart of the piece are three mysterious whispered chords over which Sibelius wrote ‘Voces Intimae’ - inner voices. Praga’s brilliant pairing of these two musical diaries is played with keen insight by the Kocian Quartet.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDEver since the tenure of conductor Eduard van Beinum, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has maintained one of the greatest Bruckner symphonic traditions in the world. With this release of Bruckner’s third and fourth symphonies, Mariss Jansons and his Amsterdam-based orchestra add a new chapter to the RCO’s impressive performance and recording history of Bruckner’s works. In Jansons’ view, the refi nement of Bruckner’s music — however grandiose it may be — will always win out over grandiloquence. Under Jansons’ baton, Bruckner has a warm, beating heart: his rhythms are not simply played, they are, above all, experienced.
John Eliot Gardiner’s award-winning Bach Cantata series on Soli Deo Gloria continues with volume nine in the series featuring cantatas for the seventeenth and eighteenth Sunday after Trinity, recorded live in October 2000. Works include BWV 148 Bringet dem Herrn Ehre seines Namens, BWV 114 Ach, lieben Christen, seid getrost, BWV 47 Wer sich selbst erhöhet, der soll erniedriget werden, the motet BWV 226 Der Geist hilft unser Schwacheit auf, BWV 96 Herr Christ, der ein’ge Gottessohn, BWV 169 Gott soll allein mein Herze haben, BWV 116 Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ and BWV 668 Vor deinen Thron tret’ ich hiermit, the so-called “Deathbed Chorale.”

On this new release from SDG, John Eliot Gardiner and his superb per iod- instrument chamber orchestra, the English Baroque Soloists, offer their unique interpretation of Bach’s
Brandenburg Concertos. This is Gardiner’s fi rst recording of these works and it follows a phenomenal eleven-concert residency at the Spitalfi eds Music Winter Festival in December 2008 and January 2009. These concertos, described by Bach as ‘Concertos for several instruments’, are widely regarded as among the fi nest musical compositions of the Baroque. Now considered a benchmark of Baroque music, the concertos still have the power to move people almost three centuries later.

“A new way to hear Brahms.”— THE STAR-LEDGER
Concert review“Gardiner encouraged rampaging exuberance from his excellent horns, subtle
dynamic variations from oboes and strings, and some unusually complex phrasing...delivered with such conviction.”
— THE TIMES
The release of Joseph Kei lberth’s l egendary stereo recordings of the first cycle of the 1955 Ring at Bayreuth brought Testament worldwide acclaim. Partly for recording security, partly out of interest, Decca’s engineers also recorded the second cycle, from which this fi rst-ever release of Die Walküre is drawn. While taping both the Ring cycles and the performances of Der fl iegende Holländer (also conducted that year by Keilberth, see Testament SBT2 1384), the Decca team also made some experimental recordings of excerpts from his Tannhäuser performances. Keilberth inspires his orchestra here to a Toscanini-like sensuality in the dance music. The section recorded from Act III catches the young Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in his second year at the festival and shows the risks that Wolfgang Windgassen was prepared to take with the title role — employing, as Wagner himself asked for at the opera’s Paris première in 1861, a deliberately hoarse, broken tone for this failed pilgrim’s search for grace.

“On the highest level, unthinkably superior to anything that could take place in Bayreuth or
anywhere else now.”— INTERNATIONAL RECORD REVIEW
This previously unreleased recording was taken from live performances at the 1993 London Proms. At that time, Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra were on the top of their game and enjoying worldwide celebrity. Even in her late 60’s, Ida Haendel’s technique was fi rm. Her connection to the Sibelius concerto in particular was almost legendary, and critics at the time praised her performance with rare unanimity. The Times’ critic stated, “She can claim the composer’s approval for her interpretation... It is still one to compel admiration for its cogency as well as its unimpaired technical assurance.” Haendel fi rst played the Elgar in her teens. Her noted recording of the work for EMI marked one of Adrian Boult’s last visits to the studio (Testament SBT 1146).
By the time of this BBC Henry Wood Proms performance in August 1967, Sir John Barbirolli’s grasp of Mahler’s powerful sixth symphony was complete. The result is a performance of electrifying insight and interpretative mastery, displaying the New Philharmonia Orchestra at its very best. Barbirolli’s EMI recording of the work (made within a few days of this live, previously unreleased version) is not as consistently impressive. This live performance is not only demonstrably superior in several respects to the studio version, it is also living proof of Barbirolli’s greatness, his intensity and sensitivity, as a Mahler interpreter.

These two discs of unreleased live recordings from the ‘70s run the gamut musically, thus proving once again, beyond doubt, that Herbert von Karajan was truly deserving of his legendary status as a conductor. Both feature the Berlin Philharmonic and were recorded in London by the BBC. Karajan’s Rite of Spring wowed critics and offers a fascinating comparison to his 1977 studio recording. For recorded music afi cionados, Strauss and Beethoven are composers with whom Karajan’s name will always be inextricably linked. This disc of ‘programmatic’ works, Ein Heldenleben and the ‘Pastoral’ symphony, demonstrates both the conductor’s supreme technique and innate musical vision, but also the amazing virtuosity of his orchestra. As always, Testament’s transfers of the original tapes are fl awless.

The whole adventure was fi lmed by the French director Jessy Nottola and a DVD of that fi lm is included with the CD. Imidiwan: Companions is the band’s fourth release for World Village and it possesses all the elements that have made them so magnetic to western ears: raw simplicity, melodic beauty and songs ranging from the epic and universal to the intimate and personal. This fourteen track album, produced by Jean-Paul Romann, who had previously worked with Tinariwen on their 2001 debut album, The Radio Tisdas Sessions, was recorded in Malian village of Tessalit, home of band members Ibrahim Ag Alhabib and Hassan Ag Touhami. File In: Soundtrack CollectionsHowe Records is pleased to announce the inaugural release of their new Collector’s Edition series from the vaults of Grammy Award-
winning composer Howard Shore. Album series producer Jonathan Schultz has uncovered thousands of recordings documenting Shore’s career of composing original scores, concert pieces, chamber music and songs. Access to some of this material requires expert restoration of analog tapes in which reels are carefully baked and calibrated, splices are repaired and original balances are replicated or adjusted as needed to make this music available. Volume One launches the series with a collection of unreleased recordings, some from fi lms and many pieces that have never been heard in any form. The fi rst four tracks are from the score to the Martin Scorsese fi lm After Hours and the last track is from the Diane Keaton documentary Heaven. These fi ve tracks showcase Shore as both musician and performer. The middle tracks of the disc (tracks 5-11) have never been heard before. These compositions are unique, jazz-infl uenced pieces with captivating solos for guitar and harmonica with orchestra. Artists of Cuban, Haitian, West African, European, African American and Jewish American heritage converged in a Berlin studio for two days of intensive recording, without music or a predetermined conception, only a shared commitment to the communal, celebratory character that embodies the expressive riches of Mother Africa. Weaving a musical lineage of a thousand strands, Tales From The Earth recalls something of the creative spirit of M’Boom, the inventive all-percussion octet founded by Max Roach in 1970. File In: JazzEric Le Lann started his career as a professional trumpeter at the age of 20. He won the Grand Prix at La Defence in 1979 and the Django Reinhardt prize in 1983. He has recorded fi fteen albums under his own name so far with the likes of Mike Stern, Martial Solal, Archie Shepp, Eddie Gomez and Mino Cinelu and he has played with Chet Baker, Herbie Hancock, Billy Hart and Dexter Gordon. This new album was recorded in October 2008 in Systems Two Studio, NYC. Le Lann is accompanied by three major American artists: David Kikoski, Doug Weiss and Al Foster. The album was been produced like a recorded live performance: the musicians met and discovered each other while playing, with a maximum of two takes per track to keep the music as improvised and inspired as possible.
File In: JazzThe legendary orchestra of ‘The King of Jazz,’ Paul Whiteman, returns to Dutton with this, their third volume of his recordings, here spanning the years 1926-33. As is well-documented, Whiteman’s orchestra of this period contained several star players such as Bix Beiderbecke and Frankie Trumbauer, and here Beiderbecke is heard to great effect. Whiteman has his usual lineup of star vocalists in tow, the most notable among them being Bing Crosby, and his inimitable vocal style adorns various numbers in this compilation. Other featured vocalists included Harry Barris, Al Rinker, Peggy Healy and Jack Fulton, while several of the arrangements are by Bill Challis.

Dutt on Vocalion • CDLK 4392
File In: NostalgiaHere Frank Chacksfi eld interprets, in his own inimitable style, the legendary repertoire of Simon & Garfunkel, Jim Webb and the Beatles. Aided and abetted on both albums by arranger Johnny Keating, these classic tunes are rendered in inventive, modern interpretations that more than do justice the timeless originals.
File In: NostalgiaTony Osborne was one of Britain’s leading arranger-composers, and was the arranger of choice for Judy Garland, Eartha Kitt and Shirley Bassey. This release focuses on his considerable skills as both an arranger and a composer. Brass ‘n’ Ivory and Brass in the Night mix originals with arrangements of contemporary popular tunes and give Osborne’s many talents a well-deserved spotlight.
