As well as being a virtuoso pianist, Beethoven was also a competent violinist – an experience he put to good use in his ten sonatas for violin and piano. Isabelle Faust and Alexander Melnikov have long cherished the project of recording them all. A behind-the-scenes documentary filmed on this occasion (included in the set) gives an insight into these artist’s careful efforts to get as close as possible to the composer’s original intentions.

Handel’s last great published set of instrumental concertos arrived posthumously in 1761. Played here on a chamber organ with real-time improvisations and enlarged continuo support, these magnificent concertos (including the beloved “The Cuckoo and the Nightingale”) show Handel at his glorious and compositional best, and allow a concentrated view of his style from the last 20 years of his life.

This month Alia Vox offers two new releases in their Heritage series. The first features two orchestral masterpieces by Henry Purcell, one of the Baroque period’s most beloved composers. The second is a specially priced (3 CDs for the price of 2) set featuring a definitive overview of Spanish sacred music from the XVIth Century. The Heritage collection from Alia Vox offers a fresh vision of the recordings that Jordi Savall, Montserrat Figueras and their ensembles Hespèrion XX, La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Le Concert des Nations made under the Astrée label. This unique discography features over sixty albums and includes some of the most important recordings from the early music renaissance. Alia Vox has remastered and edited these titles with the meticulous care that has been the label’s hallmark since it was founded in 1998.

— THE IRISH TIMES
Like so many others of Jewish origin, Hungarian-born pianist Louis Kentner emigrated to England in the mid 1930s. He was to remain there for the rest of his life, becoming very much part of British musical life. His London debut took place in 1936 and was an all Liszt recital. As a direct result he was signed up by HMV and over the next fifteen years, made a large number of recordings. This disc, in addition to a number of the well known etudes, features a group of late Liszt pieces including the bizarre Czárdás Macabre and the Les Patineurs scherzo - one of Liszt’s most brilliant operatic transcriptions.
Bohuslav Martinů’s 1940 Sinfonietta Giocosa was one of the last works he wrote before leaving Europe for America. The title is a misnomer in that the work is actually a piano concerto. Its overall style is neo-classical, although jazz influences tinge the finale. Similarly, the Toccata e due Canzoni of 1946 contains both neo-classic and jazz elements and features solo piano. The 1928 Jazz Suite is comprised of four pieces for small orchestra drawn from his opera Les Larmes du couteau and is written in an expressionist style inspired by the music of Kurt Weill.

Prokofiev’s first cello concerto, written in the late 1930’s, was not well-received at its premiere. Although poorly interpreted by the cellist, much of the blame fell on Prokofiev for writing a “soul-less” concerto. The work was seldom played afterwards, until Prokofiev heard Rostropovich play it at a 1947 concert at the Moscow Conservatory. The performance reawakened Prokofiev’s interest in the cello and he rewrote the work (with advice from Rostropovich) re-christening it as the Sinfonia Concertante. This live recording also features two solo encores by Tcherepnin and Crumb. Written in a similar time period as the Prokofiev, they provide a fascinating look at the contrasting styles in use by composers in the post-war years.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDChannel Classics’ Mozart violin sonata series on historical instruments featuring Rachel Podger and Gary Cooper has impressed critics around the world. Previous releases have received many awards and accolades including multiple Diapason d’Or awards and Gramophone Editor’s Choices and have been hailed as ‘benchmark’ recordings. This specially-priced release, encompassing volumes seven and eight, completes the set. Featured repertoire includes the ‘London’ sonatas of 1764.
SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD The Amsterdam Sinfonietta has combined a romantic masterpiece of the string orchestra repertoire with two wild compositions from the inter-war period. Dvorák, Haas and Schulhoff hardly make a conventional mixture, but all three of these composers had their roots in a region which was known for many centuries as “Bohemia.” One can hear this common ground in the rhythmic diversity, the influence of folk music and the melodic inventiveness that characterizes their music.

Like many other artists, the great Russian pianist Shura Cherkassky fled from what became Soviet Russia and settled in the USA. A student of Josef Hoffman, Cherkassky is considered by many critics to be the last great Romantic pianist. This release from the brand-new First Hand Records label is published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Cherkassky’s birth. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1956 and 1958, the set’s 26 tracks were remastered at Abbey Road Studios from the original EMI/HMV tapes. Most are issued here in stereo for the first time and many have never before appeared on CD. Of special note are unpublished versions of Chopin’s Ballade No. 3, the Gershwin Preludes and for the first time on CD, Litolff ’s Scherzo with BBC Symphony Orchestra led by Malcolm Sargent. This set, which features over two hours of music, is a significant historical classical piano release and provides a major boost to the limited Cherkassky discography currently available.

The Brabant Ensemble presents another exciting find: a hugely neglected composer from the 16th century. Although relatively little is known about Dominique Phinot’s life, his compositional output was considerable both in volume and quality. The five-voice motets of his Liber primus mutetarum demonstrate his outstanding polyphonic skills and the Liber secundus contains five eight-voice works that are unique in the mid-sixteenth century in their treatment of double-choir dialogue. These works, of which four are included in this recording, are the antecedents of the resplendent Venetian polychoral tradition of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
In this bicentenary year of his birth, Mendelssohn’s music is enjoying a long overdue renaissance. Hyperion’s contribution to the composer’s rehabilitation includes their acclaimed series of songs and duets. It is remarkable to realize that compositions by a major composer could go unpublished and unheard for more than 150 years. Pianist Eugene Asti has gathered together 46 previously unknown songs from various stages of this composer’s sadly truncated life. These newly published works reveal a willingness to experiment with novel song forms and highly expressive harmonies. For this disc, Eugene Asti has gathered together a dazzling selection of singers, including some of the most exciting young artists working today.

Marc-André Hamelin’s first set of Haydn piano sonatas was Hyperion’s best-selling release of 2007. It had the critics jostling to acclaim his performances in the highest terms, in particular his expression of the,
“physical exhilaration of Haydn’s playful inspiration in a way unmatched by any pianist past or present” (International Piano Magazine). His second volume, released in a year where new Haydn recordings are prominent, should surely match the critical and commercial success of the first. Some of Haydn’s most alluring and appealing keyboard works are recorded here. The surprising (to some) emotional range of the composer is fully evident in the extraordinarily sensitive and intimate Sonata No 49 in E flat major written for Maria Anna von Genzinger and the profoundly felt Andante con variazioni in F minor, the composition of which coincided with her death.
“It is an axiom of classical recording that there is no such thing as a Hamelin disc that is anything less than compelling and fascinating. He has the most impressive
combination of technique, intellect and fearlessness.”— DALLAS MORNING NEWS

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe second release on the Ma r i i n s k y l a b e l f e a t u r e s Shostakovich’s first and final symphonies. Valery Gergiev made award-winning recordings of Shostakovich symphonies for Philips, however he will release a complete cycle on the Mariinsky label, starting with the symphonies he has not previously recorded. Over 45 years separate the composition of the works on this disc and yet both exude creativity and Shostakovich’s dark wit. The first symphony owes much to the influence of Shostakovich’s Russian predecessors including Tchaikovsky and Scriabin. However it also reflects contemporary artistic life and the optimism of the early years in the Soviet Union. By contrast, the final symphony is a more bitter work, drawing on many of the themes that recur throughout Shostakovich’s career and yet never resorting to melodrama.

“There is something abnormal in almost all Bach’s flute sonatas,” wrote Frans Bruggen in the booklet note for his recording of these pieces. It is true that the flute sonatas do not constitute a homogeneous corpus within the composer’s output. We do not possess the “six flute sonatas” as we have, for instance, the “six sonatas for violin and harpsichord” or the “six suites for unaccompanied cello.” Each of Bach’s works for flute corresponds to a different creative period and he did not take the trouble to assemble them in a single manuscript with a view of publication, for example. It was the first editors of these sonatas in the 19th century who divided them into groups.
The two String Quintets are considered to be among Brahms’ greatest chamber works. The first was a favorite of the composer, and he wrote to his publisher that, “you’ll never receive anything more beautiful from me.” The second was written when Brahms had all but retired. When he delivered the work to the publisher he wrote, “with this note you can take leave of my music, because it is high time to stop.” The Nash Ensemble, having recently celebrated their 40th anniversary, are having something of a golden period. Their previous Onyx discs of Turnage and Mendelssohn received rave reviews.

The new release from Philip Glass’ record label Orange Mountain Music presents, for the first time, the complete original soundtrack from the classic Godfrey Reggio film Koyaanisqatsi. The LP release of this Glass score was released in the 1980s in a severely truncated form with only 6 tracks and 45 minutes of music. This newly re-mastered recording features thirteen tracks and over 76 minutes of content including original sound-effects and additional music used in the film. This version of Koyaanisqatsi is the most complete and representative recording of the soundtrack to this seminal film. The music is performed here by the Philip Glass Ensemble conducted by Michael Riesman and produced by Kurt Munkacsi.

From our privileged position, half a century on, there may be a temptation to feel superior and to undervalue the 1957 Covent Garden Trojans and what it achieved. We hear these distant sounds with ears familiar with the work from performances — conducted by the likes of Colin Davis, John Eliot Gardiner, James Levine and others — more assured and accurate than was possible for those worthy pioneers, tackling it for the first time. They had to make do with inaccurate performing material hired from the Paris firm of Choudens, disfigured by mistakes. But what Rafael Kubelík and his performers achieved was absolutely crucial. The Covent Garden production vindicated Berlioz’s original conception of a five-act opera embracing Troy and Carthage in a single span and did so in the face of a century of hostile, dismissive opinion.
Amériques — a symbol of renewal, adventure, and discovery — is a symphonic eruption that earned a place in the twentieth century’s list of famous scandals at its premiere. The version on this CD for two pianos, eight hands featuring the Bugallo-Williams Duo introduces the musical world to a work of extreme pianistic virtuosity, both delicate and ecstatic, a work whose wild activity could not be more different from the almost motionless introspection of the Feldman pieces. As Feldman said, “Instead of inventing a system like Schoenberg, Varèse invented a music that speaks to us with its incredible tenacity rather than its methodology. When listening to Varèse, we ask ourselves, ‘How did he do it?’ and not ‘How was it done?’”

File in: World / Africa / Equatorial GuineaMamadou Barry is a multi-instrumentalist – he not only plays tenor, alto and soprano sax but also flute and percussion. A connoisseur of all the sub-region’s rhythms and music styles, Barry is open to all musical trends. Niyo was recorded with the cream of Conakry’s musicians, all generations included, both modern and traditional. It notably features three of the finest female voices in Guinea. With his cool yet energetic Afrobeat style and the frenzied rhythms of the forest that he has invited into his music, Barry showcases all the facets of his talent in this recording, notably his gift for hypnotic Mandingo melodies.
File in: World / Europe / FranceWatcha Clan are a fierce posse of musical nomads. Their multi-ethnic, multi-groove infusions whip audiences into a dance frenzy, regardless of where in the world they happen to be on their never-ending tour. Along the way they’ve met talented DJs, fellow musical travelers on dance floor journeys. Friendship and mutual inspiration blossomed, communicated in the languages of dub, ragga, reggae, drum’n’bass and electro, sung to melodies traditional or modern, with Arabic and Mediterranean flavorings. Following up on their award-winning Piranha album Diaspora Hi-Fi, Diaspora Remixed is Watcha Clan’s tuneful travel diary, documenting these encounters in descriptive sound chapters.

Following on the heels of their grammy® Award-winning work with the Klezmatics, vocalists Susan McKeown and Lorin Sklamberg present Saints & Tzadiks — a fascinating album combining Yiddish and Irish songs. Culled from rare archive material and old recordings, McKeown and Sklamberg have selected songs on various themes from the Jewish and Irish traditions: love, death, betrothal, betrayal and the demon drink. The bulk of the Jewish material is drawn from the Ruth Rubin Archive at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, where Sklamberg serves as Sound Archivist. The Irish songs come from both the popular and the ancient Gaelic sean nós traditions. Susan McKeown has recorded ten albums of original and world music and built an impressive career through her many releases, extensive touring and performances on programs such as A Prairie Home Companion, All Things Considered, Mountain Stage and for PBS, Sessions at West 54th and American Masters. Her World Village album Sweet Liberty was nominated for a BBC Folk Music Award. Lorin Sklamberg has been the lead singer of the Jewish American roots band the Klezmatics since its founding in 1986.

File in: World / Asia / AzerbaijanAfter the surprise success of her first Network CD, A Flower in Bloom, Sevda, the sensual singing marvel from the Caspian Sea astounds us once again with her powerfully expressive repertoire. Her voice effortlessly fills the broad range between the traditional and the modern in Azerbaijan, between mugam and jazz. Husky, blues-like tones caress the piercing lamentations of traditional mugam, full of direct emotion and modern composure, all at a high, carefully-considered, virtuoso level in a rapid dance between bright sky and dark earth. On her new recording, Sevdali Dunya, Sevda is accompanied once again by some of the most outstanding Azerbaijani musicians, many of whom represent that country’s new generation of artists.

On this SACD, which is a straight reissue of the 1965 session, Mobley is joined by trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Billy Higgins (a typically remarkable Blue Note lineup) for the infectious title cut, three other lesser-known but superior originals, plus Wayne Shorter’s “Venus Di Mildew.”

SACD Hybrid/ StereoFile in: JazzJohn Patton, Grant Green and Ben Dixon were introduced to Blue Note by Lou Donaldson and quickly became the quintessential rhythm section for Blue Note’s funkier sessions. They came together for this, John Patton’s first album, with two of the label’s tenor saxophonists Fred Jackson and Harold Vick. The double tenors and organ trio make an unbeatable combination for some soulful, swinging music.

SACD Hybrid/ StereoFile in: BluesOne of the all-time great urban blues records and the best-seller in the famed Delmark catalog, Hoodoo Man Blues is so full of bravado and snap it’ll make you feel tough just listening to it. Not all of the Delmark titles were recorded very well, but this one certainly was. The album, which features Buddy Guy on guitar, is not only Junior Wells’ first LP appearance, it’s damn near the first LP by a Chicago blues band. Chess and a few other labels had reissued 45s by Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, etc., but virtually no one had tried to capture the Chicago blues sound free of the limitations of juke box/airplay promotion. Hoodoo Man Blues went a long way in the popularization of real Chicago blues and of Junior Wells.

File in: BluesMan Child is the title of Marquise Knox’s national debut, and for good reason. Yes, he was just 16 years old when he made this recording, but no, this is not another one of those guitar-hero, someday-my-vocals-may-mature, I-might-one-day-write-my-own-material records. This kid is flat-out for real! This is a man-sized offering of serious, mature blues. In fact, it’s the maturity that provides the shock value here. Sixteen years old?! Listen to that voice and you’ll swear he’s lying about his age. The guitar licks are tasty and restrained, with none of this hyper-active, self-absorbed speed metal that somehow gets confused with blues. Marquise has already won the approval of B.B. King, Henry Townsend, Robert Lockwood Jr., Big George Brock, Bob Margolin, Sam Lay... Read those names again. Do you really thing we’re talking about a novelty act here? And he’s an original. All but one of the tracks on Man Child were penned by Marquise, and most of them were written in the studio, on-the-fly, a skill learned at least partially by one of Marquise’s main heroes, Henry Townsend. This is a 16-year-old, inner-city kid who somehow has decided to become a dead-serious bluesman of the old-school variety. That just doesn’t happen anymore.

tton
Engelbert Humperdinck, king of the romantic balladeers, kicked-off the 1970s phase of his career with We Made It Happen, one of his many Decca albums. It is chock-full of beautiful songs including “Everybody’s Talkin,” “Wand’rin’ Star,” “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head” and many more. From 1971 comes Sweetheart, and it features romantic material all of which, of course, is beautifully interpreted. On Another Time, Another Place, Engelbert explored the repertoire of 1970s popular song, aided by the beguiling arrangements of Laurie Holloway, Les Reed and others. In Time features sensitive renditions of numbers such as “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” “Life Goes On,” and many more. My Love and Engelbert — King of Hearts were the last two records that Humperdinck recorded for Decca. They also represent two of the best that he recorded during the 1970s.

Tom Jones at his soulful, rocking best

The first two albums compiled here are the last that Tom Jones recorded for Decca, thus ending his long and incredibly successful relationship with the label. Somethin’ ‘Bout You Baby I Like contains some particularly fine soul/R&B material by composer-musicians such as J.R. Bailey and Dr. John, while Memories Don’t Leave Like People Do was a collaboration between Tom and veteran US soul composer-producer Johnny Bristol. Recorded in London in the early 1970s, Close Up and Tom, showcase the earthy, funky R&B side of Tom Jones. Recorded in both the UK and US, at a time when Tom Jones was exploring his roots in earthy R&B as well as romantic ballads, The Body and Soul of Tom Jones features plenty of the former, with Tom’s electrifying renditions of numbers such as “Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone,” “Ballad of Billy Joe” and “Lean On Me.” Tom Jones Sings She’s a Lady features Tom’s inspiring version of Paul Anka’s title song as well as gorgeous interpretations of “Ebb Tide,” and “In Dreams.” If you want to hear Tom Jones at his soulful, rocking best, than look no further than these albums.
