Harley Owners Group HARLEY -DAVIDSON OF INDIANAPOLIS CHAPTER #1238 Northside Harley News January 2010 It seems as if this new year has started with a bang and a headlong rush. Coming from a couple of weeks of holiday vacation, I wasn’t prepared for the immediate onset of activity, work, and deadlines that awaited at the office. So far, 2010 has been like trying to board a speeding bullet train by leap- ing from the depot platform. This is also a busy time for our chap- ter officers as we prepare for the new year and the coming riding season. We have a great team in our officers and I am very pleased with the results of December’s elections. I very much appreciate the commitment that has been made and the willingness to support the chapter. Already, we have held several infor- mal meetings and conversations to set up administrative processes and to pro- vide a chance for new officers to learn the ropes. The outgoing officers of 2009 have done a great job in passing the torch and the enthusiasm to our new officers. In the coming months, the 2010 officers will meet regularly to learn their posts, prepare for the new riding season, and to bring as much to the chapter as possible. Many of our landmark events are beginning to take shape; their size and complexity require early planning, commitments, and communication. Look for information in the coming meetings and e-mails for events such as the Flags For Heroes Ride and Loop for Life. In addition, Bill Keesling and Greg Shipley are collecting input for building the chapter’s activities schedule for the coming season. Without a doubt, 2010 will be a year of changes. As a chapter, we need to address changes that are brought upon us by our dynamic and unpredictable economy. Changes will also be needed to keep our chapter aligned with the directions and desires of our member body. And other changes will be sought to keep the chapter fresh and interesting while supporting a fun environment in which to meet and ride. Change will always be a required component of this chapter or any group that chooses to remain sufficiently flexible to weather the years and to be relevant to the greater good of its greater numbers. But our chapter has a solid founda- tion upon which we will continue to build and flourish. The values and goals laid down by the chapter’s founding members and by those that have shep- herded it through the years are just as important and relevant today. Further- more, the chapter will have a solid support in our dealership family. As our chapter moves towards autonomy and self-sufficiency, it assumes a position of partnership with the dealership; a rela- tionship that few H.O.G. chapters have experienced or have a chance to enjoy. This partnership is among the chapter’s greatest assets. I look to the coming year with great anticipation and optimism. Given the support of the membership and com- mitment of those who volunteer to be a part of our chapter’s activities, I choose not to fear change but to embrace the opportunities that they represent.I am often drawn to a piece of advice that has become a personal mantra: In any given situation, • The best thing to do is the right thing, • The second best thing to do is the wrong thing, • And the worst thing to do is nothing. I am secure in the knowledge that through the effort of this chapter and its officers, we will make our traditions stronger while we explore new territo- ries. We will make mistakes along the way but will only fail if we choose to learn nothing from them. I hope that 2010 is a year that you have chosen to take an active role in participation and support of the chapter, our partnership with the dealership, and our events and activities. We have already received much feedback from members eager to ride and eager to see the chapter move ahead. I also hope that 2010 is the year that you choose to regularly show your chapter pride, liter- ally. There is a groundswell among those who wear our chapter insignia with pride and I invite you to be among those who would make known the pres- ence of H.O.G Indianapolis Chapter #1 in our communities. Well, the local membershiprenewal process went verysmooth this year with only aslight little glitch from yourstruly. (Sorry!) For those ofyou that were part of the firstfew that were in line, pleasecheck your cards and makesure that the “Expires” datewritten in is 12/2010. I acci-

dently wrote in expiration dates of your National Hog Mem-bership on a few of them. And for those of you that didn’t geta card, (we ran out) they will available at our next meeting, sowhen you sign in, you can pick them up.

Message from Chapter Safety OfficerInspect Before You RideGreetings and Happy NewYear! Well it is 2010, the start of

a new year. If you’re like me, you’re looking out the windowand grumbling about the snow and ice on the roads becausethat means you can’t be outside doing what you have a passionfor and that is riding your motorcycle. Some of you may have put your “bike” in storage at the end

of October or early November and you won’t take it out untilthe first week in April. Or if you are like me, you have parkedit in the garage ready to go for a ride once the roads are clearand dry and the weather is sunny with the temperature above40! Or maybe some of you are lucky enough to have plannedto attend “Bike Week” in Daytona Beach FL, in 6-weeks.Whatever your story is, keep in mind that when you finally

do get that opportunity to take your “bike” out for a ride, makesure you do a pre-ride inspection. I was looking at the Motor-cycle Safety Foundations web site and found their inspectionchecklist called T-CLOCS, which stands for the following:

T = Tires (tires, wheels & brakes)C = Controls (levers, pedals, cables & throttle)L = Lights (headlamp, tail Lamp/brake lamp, turn signals,

lenses & reflectors, battery & wiring)O = Oil (levels & Leaks)C = Chassis (frame, suspension, chain/belts & all fasteners)S = Stands (side kick stand or center stand)

Yes, today’s motorcycles are very reliable machines com-pared to what they were like 30-years ago, but with all thenuts, bolts, controls, and electronics pretty much out in theopen, and only two tires connecting you to the pavement, youneed to be able to inspect your motorcycle and make the occa-sional minor adjustments needed to keep it operating safely. You don’t need to be a master mechanic, but it helps to

know your way around a tire pressure gauge, a wrench orscrewdriver. Most everything a rider needs to know is in themotorcycle owner’s manual. Bottom line is that you need tolook your “bike” over to ensure it is ready to ride and ridesafely! If you do routine maintenance and have your motorcy-cle serviced on regular intervals, you should enjoy many milesof riding enjoyment.

Ride Safe,Will Huston

Message from Assistant DirectorHi Everyone and Happy New Year!We had a great turn out for the January meeting and the re-

newal process went very smoothly. We will have a renewalprocess setup for the February meeting for those folks whocould not make the January meeting. The weather has been bitter cold so far during the month of

January, thus I did not make the hang-over run this year. Forthose of you that braved the elements, you’re a better bikerthan me. I saw that about 200 people were for the ride, butonly a few actually made the ride. Congrats to our own MattBenn for making the ride!!!I’m looking forward to a very exciting year. I believe that

we have a great group of officers and I look forward to contin-uing the great tradition and expectation of having great ridesduring the summer. I have already been working with DawnTeague on the Flags4Heroes ride in May and expecting tohave a great time.I look forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting in

February.Michael Boudreau

Northside Harley NEWS JANUARY 2010

I had risen early on this Saturday morning and was thinkingabout the article that I needed to write for the Chapter newslet-ter. Lying in bed, my mind drifted to a spring morning on theHarley, a roadside stop at the junction of a couple of longstraight county highways amid farm fields, and the cool morn-ing air heavy with birdsong and the promise of a great ride. With this on my mind, I stumbled to the kitchen to set the cof-fee to brew and headed out into the chill of the pre-dawn air toget the paper. Because it was early, I decided to forego theease of going out through the garage to avoid the thump andrumble of the garage door opening and closing; I didn’t wantto wake the neighbors. After all, I had a front door on thehouse; I should probably use it from time to time to keep thehinges from rusting shut.I crossed the landing on the front stoop and was just taking

my first step down the top stair of the dozen or so steps whena small voice in my mind registered the presence of ice. Toolate. I don’t actually remember falling; it was an instantaneousshift to a prone position that was obviously meant to deliverthe greatest amount of physical damage to the largest surfacearea. Cats are known for their ability to manipulate their bod-ies, gyrating in mid-air to land squarely on their feet. I, on theother hand, am blessed with the innate ability in these situa-tions to bodily conform to rigid structures like a rag doll; it ismy only true super-power. As such, each stair was greeted andexperienced individually by an orderly succession of blows bymy tailbone, spine, and head with a smattering of elbows toround out the experience.Interestingly, as I was in the midst of falling, several things

passed through my mind aside from my cervical vertebrae.First, I became aware of the sound. The distinct, staccato pum-meling of floundering flesh and bone on glazed wooden stairswere amplified and then reverberated by the walls and win-dows of the house. My journey to fetch the newspaper wasmeant to be a minor private pilgrimage; but now I had raisedsufficient commotion as to set dogs to barking on the nextblock. And then there was the image of Tim Conway doing histrademark entrance to a scene via the stairway in a Carol Bur-nett skit. This actually made me chuckle mid-flight, at leastmentally. As I neared the bottom of the stairs, I actually began to won-

der how I would stop as my driveway has a steep pitch and ittoo was probably a glare of ice. It was obvious that I was pick-ing up speed in my descent and now visions crossed my mindof my windswept carcass being pulled from a fencerow in thenext county. I gave no thought to the doormat at the bottom ofthe stair that was secured to the concrete walk by the per-mafrost that would hold it captive until July. You know thekind of doormat I mean, the ones made of the hard black rub-ber of recycled steel radial tires and impregnated with grit toefficiently free the soles of your winter boots from the accu-mulation of mud, snow, and slush. All of which have the samesurprising capacity for wear and tear as human flesh. But the doormat’s real contribution to my spectacular en-

trance to this day was its stopping power. Like a Navy fighterjet landing on a pitching aircraft carrier and setting the tailhook on a cable that would jerk it to a stop from 300 miles an

hour in the span of six feet, my doormat just as effectivelycaptured the seat of my pants and immediately ended my for-ward trajectory in a power-wedgie of sufficient energy as topart the hair on my head. My left shoe skipped across thesnow-crusted yard to my neighbor’s driveway while my rightshoe didn’t begin to lose speed until halfway across the cul-de-sac.As I lay there in that fleeting instant of time where you

begin to really assess the damage before the pain emerges, Iactually chuckled aloud. For those neighbors that weren’tjarred awake by the din of my front door dismount, (I amguessing it was similar to the sound of a side of beef beingshot into a commercial clothes dryer) I couldn’t help butsnicker at the imagery of my fall from grace. I probably wouldhave laughed my butt off were it not already scraped acrossthe stairs and the doormat with whom I have now permanentlybonded. As the laugh faded, the pain began to seep in and theadrenaline pumped at full speed – there is nothing quite soironic as being 150% alert just as the pain sets in and the ac-tion is over.As the chill of the ice and concrete began to make their pres-

ence known, my mind drifted once again to that June morningon the bike, a cool breeze blowing, the green promise of newcrops and budding trees, and the joy of a ride down goodcountry roads. So, here’s to us, to surviving winter, and tolooking forward to the riding season and some time for our-selves and a good long ride. We’re going to need it.

Ride Far, Be Safe, & Enjoy,Ken

Karen & Terry Pociluyko started seeing each otherduring high school in 1978, and continued to date offand on for the next five years. They shared many com-mon interests, the least of which was their love of mo-torcycles, each buying motorcycles in their late teens.Terry bought a 1981Yamaha 750 Seca, and Karen ac-quired a mint 1975 Honda 400 Supersport. But asmany love stories would have it, though they alwaysenjoyed their time together, circumstances of life ledthem to drift apart and eventually marry other people.Though their first marriages ended, Karen and Terry

managed to reunite in November, 2008 and the oldsparks immediately flew again after 26 years apart.Terry had long converted to riding Harley's, and wascurrently riding a 2006 Street Glide. Karen had beendriving aYamaha 1100 Silverado in recent years, buthad to sell it in her divorce. Terry quickly rectified that situation by buying Karen a 2009 SoftailDeluxe in custom Big Purple Flake for her birthday in February from H-D of Indianapolis. They have

been happily riding their Harley's together ever since. This past December 17th, Karen and Terry were married in Noblesville. They look forward to spending the rest of their lives making up for all their years apart, and enjoying riding their Harley-Davidson motorcycles together as long as they can!
