Achill Island is the largest island in the Country (24km x 19km) and is accessible from the mainland by bridge. Its magnificent sandy beaches, sea cliffs and warm hospitality bring visitors back again and again for holidays.

Visit the beautiful villages of Dooagh and Dooega, the high cliffs at Slievemore and Minaun, the magnificent beaches at Keel and Keem, under the Achill Head. The famous Atlantic Drive takes you on a journey of scenic splendour, a must for all visitors to Achill.

Achill boasts no less than two adventure centres which offer the best in windsurfing, sailing, abseiling, diving and many other activities.

The Achill Seafood Festival has established itself as one of Mayo’s best festival weekends. The Festival, which is held in July, offers the best in delicious gourmet seafood, with plenty of ceol, music agus craic in the many traditional pubs in the evenings.

Scoil Acla is one of Ireland’s oldest summer schools offering workshops in traditional music, creative writing, set dancing and Ceili Workshops. The summer school hosts art exhibitions, painting courses and of course, Gaeilge Acla - the Irish of Achill. Visit Achill and choose Harlequin Hotel as the ideal base to explore this fantastic natural resource.

Westport and the Wild atlantic WaY

The Wild Atlantic Way is a 2500km (1500 miles) driving route, stretching from Malin Head in County Donegal to Kinsale in County Cork along Ireland’s western seabord.

It was launched in February 2014 by Junior Tourism Minister Michael Ring and it traverses the entire rugged and spectacular west coast of Ireland from Cork through counties Kerry, Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim to Donegal. In Mayo the Wild Atlantic Way is a 543km coastal drive and much of Mayo’s spectacular natural scenery lies along it.

In Mayo there are thirty-one Discovery Points and two of them are indicated as Signature Points: Downpatrick Head and Keem Strand in Achill. You can travel the Mayo section of The Wild Atlantic Way with the Harlequin Hotel as an ideal accommodation base.

The jewel in the crown of the Wild Atlantic Route has to be the picturesque town of Westport. Located just minutes from Harlequin Hotel the town boasts many fine restaurants, specialising particularly in seafood and many fine traditional pubs, all providing a friendly ambience and warm Irish hospitality.

There are many festivals and events taking place in Westport every year: Westport Horse & Pony Show (May/June), Westport Folk & Blue Grass Festival, Westport Sea Angling Festival, (both June), Westport Music Festival, Gaelforce West Adventure Festival (both Aug), Westport Horse Fair (Sept), Westport Arts Festival (Oct).

The entire 42km traffic-free route is ideal for a leisurely stroll, a brisk walk or an energetic cycle, while affording the opportunity to admire the breathtaking scenery around Clew Bay, from this elevated historic old railway line originally built in the 1800’s.

Traversing woodlands, rolling hills and original stone cut railway bridges the Great Western Greenway offers gentle gradients and some of the most idyllic scenery in the west of Ireland.

Enjoy spectacular views of the Nephin Beg Range to the north and views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick to the south, as you stroll, walk or cycle along the scenic route. The Greenway is a thrilling and safe experience for all the family and is suitable for people with even moderate levels of fitness.

Bicycle hire and return is available in a variety of outlets at different points of the Greenway and at Harlequin Hotel we would be delighted to assist in making arrangements for bicycle hire, preparing your picnic and providing the ideal base to explore the West of Ireland on this fantastic trackway.

Patrick’s sacred mountain, Croagh Patrick or the Reek as it is also known is situated five miles from the picturesque town of Westport and the mountain’s conical shape soars majestically above the surrounding countryside. Magnificent views of Clew Bay and the surrounding south Mayo countryside are to be had from all stages of the ascent of the mountain. Follow the steps of Patrick and in doing so meet people from far and near. One of Europe’s best know places of Pilgrimage, Croagh Patrick has provided a tough ascent for many pilgrims each year, climbing barefoot in the memory of St. Patrick, who spent forty days and forty nights fasting on the summit more than 1,500 years ago. A small church at the summit of the mountain welcomes penitents, while magnificent views of Clew Bay, with an island for every day of the year, provides inspiration for many walkers and visitors throughout the year Teach na Miasa, The Croagh Patrick Visitor Centre, is situated in Murrisk on the Pilgrim’s path at the base of Croagh Patrick mountain and opposite the National Famine Monument.
