TÜÉâÇw tÇw TuÉâà |Ç [tÜuÉÜ VÄâu With Judy Stultz The past few months have passed by in a rush of events and journeys. Holiday luncheons, parties, performances and those special moments with our family and friends were a big part of those times. We cheered for our favorite football teams, teed off in golf tournaments, hustled on the tennis courts, and actively engaged in the game, bridge, and Bunco groups. I’ve tried to recap these activities since our last newsletter ~ hope I apologize if something is omitted. Three Cheers to twelve members of our Harbor Club LGA as they defeated the ladies of Cuscow-illa, Reynolds Landing and Reynolds Plantation to win the Lake area’s Four-Club Challenge on the Cuscowilla course in October. Congratulations to the members of the winning team ~ Phoebe Allen, Patricia Balduff, Nancy Brewer, Jean Chesnut, Ellie Davis, Diane Gburek, Carol Gordon, Kathy Kurelic, Marie Madsen, Bev Oram, Diane Roberts and Ellen Stewart. Next year’s Chal-lenge will be held at Harbor Club for a hopeful repeat victory. World travelers ~ the Ledyard’s and Lofgren's, returned from the Galapagos with tales of their adventures in the amazing and extraordinary Islands. You must have them show you the pictures they took ~ unbelievable color and beauty ~ equal to Na-tional Geographic! The couples were only a few days apart in their travels, so they never met together to compare notes until their return back home. Our Harbor Club Game Group finished up the year with an Awards Party in November. Bea McCormick was the big winner with Royce Morris coming in 2nd, Lou Stefruak 3rd, John Wilson

4th, Jane Preston 5th and Lee Schilt 6th. Kathy Kurlic took home the infamous Fanny Flamingo. Fanny will grace the Kurlic’s yard until next year’s loser humbly displays her. The Ladies League, going strong as usual, hosted Cynthia Smith of Genuine Georgia in October and Nancy King from Gary’s Garden Center in November. In December, the League took a wonderful visit to Atlanta for an in town dinner and the Rockettes Christmas Show at the Fabu-lous Fox. Terri Ligon hosted an evening Christmas Cocktail Party in lieu of the December lunch-eon meeting. The ladies arrived in festive holiday finery to celebrate the season.

The Outreach Committee went over the top this year ~ collecting 125 gifts for underprivileged chil-dren at Greensboro Elementary School. This year’s cake raffles have sent quite a few hundred dol-lars on to the Circle of Love, to help women and children suffering with domestic violence. A Guys and Gals card party (with soup, salad and sweets) is scheduled for February. Be sure and see a committee member about getting a table because they will go fast and should be loads of fun! Book Club members held their annual Christmas luncheon at the Washington Grass Inn where they celebrated with wine, fabulous food, decadent desserts and a gift exchange. Several of our HC residents are involved with newly published works here in the Lake Country. Corey Crouse is one of four authors of, Do Tell! Tales Told on Southern Porches, tracing the entertaining history of Greene County. Seasons On Lake Oconee ~ The Art of the Area Through Poetry, Prose and Paintings, features three of our Harbor Club writers, Kathrin Rudland, Davis Temple and yours truly. Both are on sale throughout the area. By now we’re done with the holiday celebrations, taken down the tree, wreathes and decorations. Presents have been put way, exchanged, returned or re-gifted. Now we’re ready to sit in front of the fire with a good book (most likely the TV, the PC, or latest electronic device) and just chill out ‘til spring. Wishing you all the best in this New Year! Judy

Long Time Harbor Club Resident, Tim Simpson,

Visits Troops In Iraq PGA Tour veteran Tim Simpson spent Thanksgiving with our troops in Iraq. Tim was joined by Hall of Famer Tom Watson, 2010 Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin, as well as long drive champions Bobby Wilson and Dan Boever. The trip was called Operation Fore the Troops. The trip was from November 20th through the 29th. The group started their journey by meeting up for a golf clinic at Walter Reid Hospital in Washington. All of the soldiers that participated were amputees, and their enthusiasm was re-markable, said Simpson. Since becoming involved working with our “Wounded Warriors”, their positive attitudes and zest for life has really made an impact on me. After our clinic we then visited a number of soldiers in their hospital rooms. All of these young men had just returned from Af-ghanistan and had been either shot up or had hit roadside bombs. They all share the same attitude that no matter how badly they were injured, they all can’t wait to go back and fight again for our country. Their dedication to our country is truly incredible. We then ate dinner and then boarded our 11 ½ hour flight to Kuwait. Arriving at Camp Arafjan we spent the night but few, if any of us slept at all. The next morning we hit the ground running, we visited two of our bases in Kuwait doing autograph sessions and golf exhibitions at each, returning late that night exhausted and jet lagged. The next day we boarded our flight on a c-130 to Bagdad. Although we have liberated Iraq there are still many people that would love to harm Americans so body armor and helmets were required on all our flights. Upon land-ing we were taken straight to an autograph session followed by a clinic. We then met General Anderson at his office located in Al Faw Palace. One of Saddam Hussein’s nine Palaces in Bagdad. We then went to dinner at General Olierno’s residence. General O is a hulk of a man at six foot seven , and is a four star General making him head of our entire Army in Iraq. There were eight generals that ate with us that night. Although all of them were great guys looking back the enormity of their power was amazing. After dinner we did another exhibition, followed by all of the Generals hitting balls. Next we went back inside where our buddy country singer Matt Snook played his guitar and sang for us all. The next morning General told us that for the first time in eighteen months he had relaxed and enjoyed himself. The next couple of days were spent doing exhibitions at Camp Liberty, Camp Stryker, Camp Slayer, and Camp Victory. We then visited three different forward operating bases via Black Hawk helicopters and did three more exhibitions in the same day. Although we felt safe the reality was the two ma-chine gunners on either side of me, made me realize that we could still encounter insurgents that’s one goal is to kill Ameri-cans. The next morning was Thanksgiving. Upon entering the mess hall I got a cup of coffee and sat down with three sol-diers. I wished them a happy Thanksgiving and thanked them for their service to our country, to which one soldier looked me in the eyes and asked: “Sir is it really Thanksgiving”? The fact that he had been doing his job so thoroughly that he had lost all track of time really made an impact on me. We had Thanksgiving lunch with two thousand of our finest at Camp Liberty before boarding our flight to Camp Al Asad in Western Iraq. Upon landing and getting settled in our quarters we had our sec-ond Thanksgiving meal with our troops. Following dinner we did an autograph session where I met Captain Matt Spicer, an F-18 pilot. The night was concluded by Matt calling us up one by one, where he presented each of us with an American flag that he had flown inside his cockpit on an actual combat mission. I struggled to fight back the tears at the enormity of this gift. Of all the amazing medals and gifts that we had received from our top commanders, this was something very special. After returning to our quarters for the night Tom Watson and I were standing outside talking, after admiring the beautiful sky I said Tom this has been the greatest Thanksgiving of my life, he replied:” me too Tim.” The following day we did an exhibition off the roof of one of the buildings on the base, it was the only place where long ball hitters Dan Boever and Bobby Wilson could hit without hitting a building. So they pounded them out into the desert, and at armored carriers driving by, much to the delight of the soldiers. This was followed up with autographs and making friends with more of our troops. That night we went to sleep listening to our finest doing practice bombing raids about a mile away. The sight and sounds of our helicopters and jets in action was a sight to behold, and reminded us of just how awe-some our military might is. Continued…...

Page 4: Harbor Happenings Winter Edition 2010

Continued ……. The following day we received yet another medal from the base commander and began the first leg of our long journey home. We flew by C-130 to Camp Ali Asileem in Kuwait, where we were met by our security detail that es-corted us to Kuwait City International airport. Our flight back to Washington was thirteen hours as we were flying into a headwind. Midway through the flight with Tom Watson and I the only two reading and not sleeping, the flight attendant asked “is there anything else I can get you”? My reply was can you have the pilot find out who won the Ga.- Ga. Tech game. Although I was still several thousand miles away I had to check on my beloved Dogs! When she gave me the good news that Ga. had won, it made the last seven hours of the flight go by faster. Upon landing safely in Washington and clearing customs we said our good byes knowing that our lives had just been changed forever. When I walked out of the Atlanta airport Leigh Anne was waiting, as my final leg of my twenty hour trip back home went by quickly telling her all about the trip. There are so many memories, and so many people I would like to thank from our highly trained body guards, that escorted us on all our ground movements, while in Kuwait and Iraq, to our most powerful Commanders that thanked us repeatedly for our service to our country and most importantly to our troops. Our troops that met us with smiles and thanks everywhere we went. Our troops that so graciously thanked us for giving up our Thanksgiving to be with them. Our troops that protect our freedom in 130 degree heat and desert sand storms. Yes, our troops that have changed my life forever. May God watch over each and every one of you and thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives. With devout thanks to our military, Sincerely, Tim Simpson

diligently toward earning Class A status with the GCSAA. To acquire Class A status the partici-pant must prove a dedication to the profession, meet specific educational requirements, and accu-mulate a required number of service points. With Class A status, Superintendent McCroskey gains entry to GCSAA's certification program. Upon completion of this prestigious certification pro-gram, J. R. will become a certified golf course superintendent--a title held by few within his industry. Thanks to J. R. for a job well done.

From the Desk of the Golf Course Superintendent…. I have to admit, this year was unlike any other that I have experienced in my 13 years in the golf business. We followed up the severe droughts of `07 and `08 with an almost record setting year of rainfall. With the fairways and roughs, the excess rains were beneficial in our overall turf care program, but exces-sive wet conditions bring on a whole array of challenges when it comes to our putting surface management. In years past, the excessive droughts and watering restrictions added extra stress to the Bermuda grass areas, but we recovered well, and went into the fall the healthiest we have been in recent years. This should be beneficial to us as we come out of dormancy in the spring. The greens also did very well this year. What started out as a very hot and windy spring, finally let up towards the end of the summer, and became an excessively wet fall and winter. Our water management of the greens became a priority and our shift in strategies has benefited us well. There was not a reduction in turf quality that you would expect under these conditions. We are very optimistic as we go into winter dormancy in regards to the overall health of our Bent grass. In the upcoming year, we are going to continue our overall turf health program as we have in years past, with a few ex-ceptions. For 2010, our plans are to incorporate a few programs that are intended to improve the natural bio-system of the plant “organically,” therefore reducing the use of fertilizers and pesticides on the course, as our industry is becoming a leader in envi-ronmental awareness. We also have on the books a couple of projects and renovations that will add to the playability and aes-thetic value of our course. I am excited about the upcoming year and our commitment to providing the quality and conditions that exceed the expectations of all of those who come to enjoy the Harbor Club golf course. J.R. McCroskey Head Golf Course Superintendent

YÜÉÅ àx Wxá~ Éy àx [xtw cÜÉyxáá|ÉÇtÄ‹ FROM THE PRO SHOP…Happy New Year to everyone! Golf Tip

FROM THE LESSON TEE…How Can I Improve my Game in 2010? Start with an evaluation of where you are. A S.W.O.T. Analysis: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, & threats is ideal for evaluation. Make a written list for all four categories. Then, write down your Objectives—increase number of rounds, lower my handicap by 3 strokes, win a HC or LGA/MGA event, evaluate my equipment (clubs and ball), take a golf vacation, take a golf lesson, practice my putting once a week, walk 9 holes a week, or anything else that is important to you. The key is to write them on a piece of paper. Your ob-jectives need to be measurable and specific with an achievement date. Make them reasonable—if you are an 18 handicap, don’t set a goal of improving your handicap to a 10 in 30 days. Areas to include in your Game Improvement: physical—lose weight, improve flexibility, improve strength and endurance; mental—read an instruction book, read the Rules of Golf: emotional—have fun; stay positive; trust your swing. All the areas require some kind of practice for your Game to improve to your satis-faction. If you have the time and the desire to work on your Game, you will be surprised by the results at the end of 2010. Have a great year from myself and the Golf Staff.
