November 2015

Come Celebrate With Us
RABBI HARKAVAY WILL BE OFFICIALLY INSTALLED IN DECEMBER
Please join us for the Installation of Rabbi Rick Harkavy on Friday, December 4th, 2015, at 7:30pm.
The installation ceremony will be led by Rabbi Harkavy's close friend and mentor, Rabbi George Stern.
A festive oneg will follow our service.
CBI will be DARK on the Friday following Thanksgiving (November 27th). We hope that you will
make warm memories with your families and friends as you gather together for a traditional
meal with all the trimmings. Let’s remember the true spirit of this joyful American holiday: to
be thankful for the blessings we enjoy every day. Take time to give thought to the many good
things we experience - friends, family, community, and home. Be safe as you travel, rest and re-
charge, and come right back for more wonderful events at CBI!
November is brimming with lots of activities and programs at
the synagogue, and we hope you will participate in as many as
you can. If you look at our Coming Events page, you will find
Torah study, adult education, B’nai Mitzvah services, women’s
gatherings, brotherhood activities, Family Shabbat, and much
more. Right in the middle of all our programming comes
Thanksgiving, our national celebration of thanks for the riches
of family and the bounty of our country.

After many months of anticipation, I’m very excited to be here at CBI. I’m very blessed to be part of this
wonderful congregation.
My primary goal is to personally meet each of you and to learn what your hopes are for the future of CBI.
I look forward to getting to know each of you and find out more about you.
I thank each of you who have already warmly welcomed me. I especially want to share my endless gratitude
to Sharon and Dedee for all their kindness and support. I am so privileged to work with Angie, Danielle and
Susan.
As your rabbi, I’ll strive to do the following:
1) Be committed to the Jewish people and to Judaism.
Judaism is the lens through which I view life. I became a rabbi because I want to teach young and
old alike that Judaism has cogent advice for the problems and challenges that we face today. As
your rabbi, I want the opportunity to share my love of Judaism, hoping that by my example, others
will become acquainted with the deep sense of fulfillment Judaism has given me.
2) Be a mensch.
As your rabbi, I will strive to be a good Jewish role model. I will be open and accessible to every
congregant. I want to be the kind of rabbi with whom people feel comfortable, the type of rabbi to
whom congregants can turn for guidance, a rabbi with whom people want to share their simchas
as well as their tsuros.
3) Establish CBI as the rallying point of the Jewish community of south Atlanta.
The rabbi and the lay leaders must work together to build a vibrant Jewish community. We must
welcome people of all ages and all walks of life into our synagogue. As we create a warm and car-
ing “second Jewish home” for newcomers, as well as for long-standing members, we become a
congregation committed to meeting the needs of our congregants as well as the larger community.
Working together, CBI will become the primary Jewish voice of south Atlanta.
For many years, Jewish life has thrived at CBI. As your rabbi, I hope to work with each of you to make our
congregation even stronger.
As we embark on the New Year of 5776, may each of you and your loved ones be blessed with peace, fulfill-
ment, joy and the best of health.
Shalom,
Rabbi Rick

Tzedakah—Doing the Right Thing
In our Jewish world, justice and righteousness
are very important concepts. We are obligated
or commanded to embrace them. The word
“tzedakah” means justice. In other words, we
are always obligated to do the right thing. To
perform an act of “justice” is to be a righteous
person. When we have extra money or time or
materials, it is the right thing to share with those
in need. Even when we are needy ourselves
and cannot contribute financial gifts, we should
perform acts of tzedakah, such as giving our
time and energy to help others.
Jewish High Holiday services remind us that
tzedakah (justice), t'shuvah (repentance), and
tefillah (prayer) are the three actions we should
take to help make up for our short-comings.
Hopefully, each of us will begin walking that path
today!

Mazel Tov to the Fritz family! We look forward to Joshua leading our service and
chanting from Torah. B’nai Mitzvah is a Jewish rite of passage, in which we accept
our young teens into the world of Jewish adulthood and its responsibilities. We
want to nurture and celebrate our B’nai Mitzvah students as they travel along their
Jewish paths by supporting them and extending our sense of community to them.
The welcome that we give them at this special time can make a positive impact as
each one grows and matures in thought, word, and action.

The Mystery of the Aufruf
As our children grow up and build lives of their own, we often are presented with the happy yet
complicated pleasure of planning a wedding for them. It is a joyous occasion and most certainly
one that we want to celebrate with our entire Jewish community - our adopted “family” that has
helped us through good times and bad. Unfortunately, in today’s world, it is impossible to invite
everyone to the actual event itself. While weddings and their celebrations are special moments in
our lives, the sad reality is that these festivities also have limitations for the hosts, from financial
considerations to space restrictions and much more. But did you know that our Jewish tradition
provides a wonderful way to include everyone in part of the wedding celebration?
That’s right. We Jews have an amazing built-in way to allow the whole community to celebrate,
even when not everyone can be invited to attend the wedding itself. The Jewish custom we are
talking about is called Aufruf. The Aufruf ceremony usually takes place on the Shabbat preceding
the wedding. According to the Talmud, King Solomon built a gate in the Jerusalem Temple where
Jews would sit on Shabbat and honor new grooms, so the Aufruf custom is biblically inspired.
Reform Jews celebrate the Aufruf by inviting the bride and the groom to do an Aliyah together,
chanting the blessings before and after a Torah reading. The congregation sometimes showers
them with candy after they have finished the blessings, showing their good wishes for a sweet and
fulfilling marriage. The Rabbi will also bless the bride and groom.
After the Shabbat service, the family hosts a festive Oneg for the congregation. What a wonderful
way to experience the warmth of friendship as they provide delicious refreshments for the entire
community. In turn, the community has the opportunity to congratulate the engaged couple and
offer their love and support. Gifts are not requested nor desired. The true gift lies in the sharing
of joy and happiness within the Jewish community.
So the next time you hear about an Aufruf Shabbat, we hope you will joyously attend and join the
family in the simcha of a wedding celebration for everyone!
