Hi Everyone,

Seth and I just wanted to give you all an update on Lilly. We adopted her this summer and moved her to Las Vegas. She is happy and lively 14 hours a day and does not have a mean bone in her body. She has been going to day care about once a week, in a place where she gets to run freely with other dogs and play all day. She goes for walks with us in the morning and sometimes at night (2-4 miles a day). She loves the exercise and hasn’t had any issues with other dogs. She is gentle with our elderly cat and seems to be protective of him when our friend’s dogs come over to visit.

Nothing makes her more happy than her toy balls. She LOVES balls! She could play fetch all day. She has a hard time contain-ing her excitement when we get home from work, and she has been a great energy and addition to our home. Here are a few pics!

Yesterday I learned that my longtime shelter kitty Hunter has diabetes. It was one of three possibly diagnoses for him; the other two having no hope of cure. I can get over my fear of needles for his furry love!

We all love Chewie very much, and she has fi lled our lives with love, caring, trou-ble, and energy. Sometimes she seems extremely intelligent and understanding. When you cough or sneeze she comes over and sniff s you out to make sure you are okay (unless she is working on a raw-hide). We are so thankful to the shelter for giving us our hot mess.

Dear ASWRV,

Update on Clyde. He is doing wonderful. He loves everyone he meets including strangers. His confi dence helps my other dog feel safer in new situations which would terrify her if he wasn’t around. He is an absolute goofball and might suff er from ADHD. He has lost eight pounds since being adopted and currently is a feathery 80 pounds. Clyde is just another great example of a wonderful adult dog that can be found at your shelter.

Hello again!

Here is a picture of Sandy playing in the snow. She seems to love the outdoors, snow, water, everything! We got about 14 inches of snow before Thanksgiving week and she loved running around in it. During Thanksgiving, we travelled to California and Sandy got to stay at a ‘boarding’ place near Marsing, ID (it’s a farm-type place). She got to run around with ~10 other dogs and I’m pretty sure she loved it! She has been pooped since we picked her up.

I can’t believe it’s been a year since I brought Amber home! I’ve only been meaning to send you something about her for months. She is a wonderful cat, so calm and mellow and friendly, who stays by my side all the time when I am at home, day and night. (See the picture of her waiting for me while I’m showering!) Her tail is the longest and most expressive I’ve ever seen.

Seven-year-old male Lab/ Australian Cattle DogSize: Medium Weight: 42 lbs

Boo Boo and his friend Bear were given up to the Shelter when their owner moved and could not take them along. Boo Boo has spent much of his life outside, living in the yard. He’s ready to become a house dog and see what being a true companion is all about! Boo Boo will need someone dedicated to building his con-fi dence and giving him slow introductions to people and new situations. He is very friendly with dogs and

would do best with a friendly and confi dent dog in the house. He has lived with cats and been friendly with them, but we feel he should not be in a home with young children. He is an active and aff ectionate dog who

would love daily outings and to learn what it is to be a family member.

Boo Boo graduated from the Pet Pal Program on August 1, 2014, after completing the six week program working with a volunteer, learning skills that help make him highly adoptable. For more information on

Success In Numbers

The Animal Shelter is always improving, increasing the number of animals we help while improving their quality of

life. From personalized enrichment programs for each pet to one on one volunteer interactions through the Pet Pals program for special needs animals, the Shelter has diverse programs to meet the varied needs of each animal and help them be as adoptable as possible. Since 2009, the average length of time each pet stays at Shelter is down 30%. Th at means pets are fi nding their happy homes three weeks faster than they were just six years ago!

However, on occasion, there are still animals that wait much longer for a new family. And the An-imal Shelter is able to care for them as long as it takes. Gene Kelly, pictured here, is still waiting… 347 days and counting.

As the fi rst shelter in Idaho to adopt “no kill” policies, we are proud to be able to shelter long-

term residents like Gene Kelly as long as they need. Programs like the free community spay/neuter clinics, the lost and found network, and foster care homes help make this possible.

Th e free community spay/neuter clinics has stabilized the valley’s stray population. Since the clinics began in 2006, the number of stray animals impounded at the Shelter has dropped by 43%. Th is drop allows us to continually have space for new animals, including those who are brought in from kill shelters around the state.

Gene Kelly, and all of our longer-term animals, bring so much joy to the Shelter. Th ey represent what rescue is all about: resilience, hope, and love. Gene Kelly just turned 11, but you couldn’t fi nd a happier dog. We all know that Gene’s home is right around the corner – but until he fi nds his perfect family, the Shelter will be here to give him food, shelter, and most importantly, love.

January, reorganizing the sales fl oorand putting a new presentation onour houseware goods.

A fresh coat of clean white paint onall of the display shelves was of thefi rst order. Gone is the bright red of old. Next was the fun task of fi llingthe shelves, in colorful groupings of merchandise. Our vast assortmentof dishware and glassware sparkles nicely with the new bright white background.

Kids Just Love AnimalsFrom pet food drives, to hot apple cider stands, to

special hand made cat beds; the animals have a lot of kids to be thankful for. As these kids have proven -

philanthropy can start at any age.

ASK ABBEY We all know dog training isn’t easy. Dogs learn very diff erently than we do.

For that reason, it’s best to start with the basics. A good base of dog behavior starts with teaching your dog to sit –

a command that comes in handy in almost every situation.

Follow along with our step-by-step tutorial on teaching your dog to sit.

If you’re interested in expanding your dog behavior knowledge, consider signing up for the

Step 1: Take some treats in your closed hand and stand in front of the dog.

Step 2: Move the treat hand across your dog’s head between its ears. When it looks up, click and treat. Repeat several times.

Step 3: Now lean over your dog a little so that he leans backward. As soon as his hind legs start to fold, click and treat. Repeat several times.

Step 4: Eventually, your dog will sit. Click and treat. Move away, coax your dog to you and see if he’ll sit on his own. Click and treat. Now teach him to stay seated. Let him sit, but wait a few seconds, then click and treat. Repeat several times.

• After the dog understands what is expected of him, start using the same hand that was fi lled with treats and raise your hand up and to your chest. If your dog sits, click and treat.

• If the dog can repeat this behavior, raise the same hand (now EMPTY) and if your dog sits, click and treat from your other hand. (This is how we teach a dog the hand signal that means “sit.”)

• Practice this behavior in as many new places and with as many people as you can. This will help generalize the behavior so the dog will want to sit when it meets everyone!

What is Clicker Training?

“Clicker training is a method of animal training that uses a sound—a click—to tell an animal when he does some-thing right. The clicker is a tiny plastic box held in the palm of your hand, with a metal tongue that you push quickly to make the sound.” –ASPCA

We use the clicker training method at the Shelter to train all of the Shelter dogs. Not only is it a positive, fast, and effi cient means of training – the dogs love it too! Join one of the Shelter’s basic dog obedience classes and you can start learning how to use a clicker to train your dog.

Our Shelter is a happy place . . .

Because our dogs love the fun lady!Sandy Berk has been volunteering at the Shelter for 14 years,

walking dogs and volunteering at events. The dogs love her – in fact, she is known as the “fun lady”! Whenever Sandy comes

around, they know it’s their turn to go for a hike!

The Animal Shelter relies on volunteers like Sandy to help keep all of the animals happy and healthy while they await their new homes. For more information on becoming a Shelter volunteer, visit us online at www.animalshelterwrv.org/volunteer or give

In 2001 just BEFORE 9/11 the airline I fl ew for was off ering three month leaves. I was thinking, “What am I going to do with my time?” A former

board member suggested I volunteer at the Animal Shelter. I started walk-ing dogs, taking one dog at a time on leash down to the river and back.

That was two miles round trip and I was able to walk fi ve dogs a day. After a couple of years, I was able to take a group of dogs, off leash, up the canyon in the back of the Shelter. I could hike up and down for about fi ve hours a day and exercise at least 18 to 20 dogs a day!

It became a passion and I did this about four days a week.

I fi rst came to Sun Valley out of college from California and lived here full time until I became a fl ight attendant based in Hawaii. I am retired now but still go to Hawaii in the winters where I’ve been volunteering at the

Honolulu Zoo in the reptile department for about 22 years. I actually started walking the big monitor lizards, including the Komodo Dragons on leashes, before I started hiking the dogs! We found that walking the large monitor

lizards daily actually gave them more stamina and kept them healthier.

I love volunteering and working with all the amazing dogs that end up in the Shelter. I try never to have favorites--sometimes I can’t help it--but every dog is special and needs love and attention at this stressful time in their lives.

I guess I’m known as the “fun lady” to the dogs because when I arrive they all start jumping and barking and begging to be the next ones who get to hike!

Even after they have been hiked they keep begging for more!

Because our dogs love the fun lady!
