LEQ 5 Rock & Roll
How are different rocks formed and how do they shape our understanding of the earth’s
CRUST?
![Page 4: Happy October! 10/1/2012](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022081517/56815efd550346895dcdbbe2/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
What Does Crust Look Like?
• A lot of the crust is hard to see because it is covered by soil, rock and water
EVERYTHING WE TALK ABOUT TODAY HAS TO DO WITH THE CRUST
![Page 5: Happy October! 10/1/2012](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022081517/56815efd550346895dcdbbe2/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Rocks• Anywhere you can see
rock, you are seeing the crust of the Earth!!!
Three types of rocks you need to know:1. Igneous rock2. Sedimentary rock3. Metamorphic rock
CRUST!!!!
![Page 6: Happy October! 10/1/2012](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022081517/56815efd550346895dcdbbe2/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
What is Igneous Rock?• How does it forms?
Magma (lava) from volcanoes cools down
• What does it look like? Glassy, Shiny, Crystals
• Example: Granite, Basalt
![Page 7: Happy October! 10/1/2012](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022081517/56815efd550346895dcdbbe2/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
What is Sedimentary Rock?
• How does it form? Sediment (rock pieces and soil) is compacted or squeezed into rock
• What does it look like? Layers, Porous, often contains fossils
Examples: Chalk, limestone, sandstone
![Page 8: Happy October! 10/1/2012](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022081517/56815efd550346895dcdbbe2/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
What is Metamorphic Rock?• How does it form? Many
rocks are squeezed by pressure & heat, forming new rocks.– Deposition: Rocks/Soil is
deposited.– Compaction: Rock/Soil is
pushed together.– Cementation: Compacted
rock is heated.

What is Metamorphic Rock?• What does it look
like? Bands/Stripes of light and dark, Crystals
• Examples: Marble, slate

Thinks to know…
• Instead of using a hammer, you can use a textbook, your fist, your shoe, etc.
• Any time your lab sheet says “heat,” come up front to use one of the candles.
• When you finish…– Conclusion activities on the back side of your lab
sheet.
