Happy New Year to Lions, Lioness and Leos of the Q2 District Family.

I hope that 2014 is a fabulous year for you all, in every way that you wish. I hope your individual Dreams come to Life in 2014, as well as those of the communities you serve.

What a fabulous journey this DG year has been to date, commencing with such an Australian flavour at the Hamburg Convention, Club charters , anniversaries, hosting IP Barry Palmer, his Board and the Council of Governors at Port Douglas, our District Convention at Mackay as well as Audrey and I attending others in Toowoomba and Maryborough .

Of course, importantly my visits so far with 57 of our Clubs, for which Audrey accompanied me to 36. I have arranged a photo collage of some of the highlights of this year to share with you (elsewhere in this Bulletin).

Our Members show such a wonderful commitment and enthusiasm for making a difference in your communities.

It really is inspiring to see and hear the many outstanding projects being planned and accomplished around our vast District.

However, for all the wonderful things being done, there are a few clubs struggling and Cabinet at its November/December meeting adopted some strategies to assist these Clubs over the longer term.

I will be writing to these Clubs and outlining the plans, in January.

We lost an outstanding Lion, Reg Kuchler on 2nd December. I have placed a separate article elsewhere in this Bulletin - Reg will be sadly missed by all.

On 7th December I had the pleasure of presenting our latest charter to Bulwai Cultural Heritage Lions Club in Kuranda. This was a great night of celebration of a special purpose Club. The Club was recognised by IP Barry Palmer with a grant of $10000 to assist the club to provide forest ranger training for aboriginal youth and to

assist preserve their cultural heritage. The Members are very keen to see their Lions association a success, and we wish Charter President, tribal elder Willie Brim and his team every success. Thanks to PDG John Muller for his work in establishing this Club and I have appointed John and current Mareeba President Tom Braes as guiding Lions to assist forge the Club’s success in these early years.

This year, Clubs have been doing some wonderful work in growing our membership with 40 Clubs this year recruiting 142 new Lions to near end of December. But at the same time we have lost 105 members within 34 Clubs, and of these 46 have left in November and December. When I scan relevant reports, the worrying aspect for me is that the majority of these members have “resigned in good standing”. Whilst there can always be good reasons for this, the numbers are a concern and I wonder if Clubs are following my focus for this year on Retention – happy Lions in happy Clubs without internal tension and conflict. Are our Members feeling Involved, Informed, Relevant and Recognised ? There exist a number of programs that can assist Clubs. It is about Caring for your Club and its future. The Club Excellence Process (CEP) will establish whether the club is meeting the expectations of members, assess whether your club program is still relevant to your community and to make the club atmosphere so good that members will not want to leave. Why not have a look at this Process? In addition, as I have toured Clubs, a number of Lions have approached me that they wish to know more about Lions. In the new year, I will be asking our Leadership Team under Toni Lanphier to look at making available a simple, up to date Orientation Program that Clubs can easily use to better inform not just their incoming Members, but existing ones as well.

Vale Lion Reg Kuchler We received very sad news on 2nd December with the sudden passing of an outstanding member of our Lions family – Reg Kuchler. Lions accept the fulfilling challenge of making a difference to their community, because they want to make the world a better place in which to live. Reg was a wonderful contributor to his Club and to his community - and a Leader amongst his peers. Reg joined Lions 41 years ago and then served in leadership positions in his Lions Club as well as at District level, for many years. Reg Kuchler LOVED LIONS – Reg and Joyce never missed a District Convention and usually each year also attended our national Convention. As a result, Reg and Joyce had many friends in Lions across Australia and beyond. You would always see Reg standing with his Lions mates having a chat, usually amongst the display stands at Conventions – You see, REG loved telling a yarn and often re- telling it a few times over! AND of course, Joyce was always there in support of Reg and the Lions with their Lions mates and with their projects. Reg was given a fitting farewell on 10th December at Tully Country Club, with many Lions in attendance forming a guard of honour carrying our flag set as we sang our farewell song Smile a While, as the coffin was carried to the hearse. On behalf of the Lions Organisation, deepest condolences to Joyce, to Lesley, Robyn and Geoffrey - and to your families. FAREWELL REG KUCHLER – You will be missed - may you rest in peace. DG Gary

CHATER NIGHT – BULWAI

CULTURAL HERITAGE LIONS CLUB

It was smiles all round on Saturday Night 7th

of

December when the Charter Members, Family,

Friends and visiting Lions met in Kuranda to

celebrate the Charter of this new “Special

Purpose” Lions Club.

Proceedings commenced with a demonstration

of traditional dance by the Bulwai Junior Dancers

– resplendent in traditional dress and

accompanied on Didgeridoo.

Brim then warmly welcomed everyone to the

Charter Dinner, and thanked Lions for giving the

Bulwai People the opportunity to join the

International Family of Lions.

District Governor Gary Kenny was on hand to

present Charter Certificates to the new

Members, and to proudly present President

Willie with the new Club’s Charter. President of

the Sponsoring Club (Rollingstone And District)

Lion Michael Rule presented the Club’s Banner,

while Guiding Lion and President of Mareeba

Lions Club, Lion Tom Braes, presented the Club

with a new Gong & Gavel. In accepting these

gifts on behalf of the Club, President Willie

thanked DG Gary for giving the members the

opportunity to “Follow Their Dreams”, and to

work in harmony with the existing Kuranda Lions

Club to help rebuild a strong Lions presence in

the community.

DG Gary also surprised Kuranda Lions President

Doug Stratford by presenting him with a

replacement Gong & Gavel, as Kuranda many

years ago lost all of their regalia when their

storage area was flooded.

So....next time you visit Kuranda why not drop in

to the “Kuranda Coffee Republic” (beside the

Post Office), introduce yourself to the new club’s

Lion Tamer Mike, view all of the new Lions

Regalia proudly on display, and enjoy the best

coffee in town while engaging in Lions

conversation!

Black Dog Ride in 2013 –

Reflections

2013 saw nearly 5,000 riders from 17 regions in every state and territory simultaneously get on their bikes for the 1 Day Ride, raising $190,000 for Lifeline and starting the conversation of depression and suicide prevention awareness in countless communities. The much loved ride to the red heartland of Australia, the fourth annual Ride to the Red Centre, saw unprecedented numbers hit the highways to get the message of awareness out to the nation. Nearly 700 Black Dog Riders rode up to 4,000kms stopping in over 90 communities, and this life changing journey raised $360,000 in vital funds for Lifeline and Mental Health First Aid.

Dubbo; Penrith; Port Macquarie, South Coast, Tamworth; Wagga Wagga. NT: Alice Springs; Darwin. QLD: Fraser Coast; Gold Coast; Mackay;

Sunshine Coast; Townsville. SA: Coober Pedy; Kangaroo Island, River View. TAS: Campbell Town. VIC: Mildura; Pakenham; Bendigo; Penshurst;

Wangaratta. WA: Avon Valley; Bridgetown; Geraldton;

Kalgoorlie.

Registrations for this ride will open in early 2014. Keep your eyes on the Upcoming Rides page in

the new year for info on itineraries, Ride Coordinator contacts, and fundraising information.

Around Australia Ride

In July 2014 we're pausing the Ride to the Red Centre and going back to our roots to repeat the ride that started it all in 2009 - the Black Dog Ride around Australia. After a 6 month window to express interest in this ride, all registration spots have now been filled.

State Rides

The Black Dog Ride Around Australia will be complemented by State Rides of 4-6 days duration. In WA, SA, VIC, NSW and QLD, a 6 to 7 day intrastate ride will run concurrently with the Around Australia Ride as it passes through each state between 26th July and 26th August. More information on dates and itineraries for the intrastate rides will be available early in 2014.

The 2013 Ride to the Red Centre raised $360,000 for Lifeline Australia and MHFA Australia, the most ever raised in a single ride in

the four years since Black Dog Ride was founded. These vital funds support Lifeline’s Online chat service and enhance MHFA's ability to train even more Australians to respond appropriately to a mental health crisis. The MHFA Australia Team took the time to thank Black Dog Ride for the significant impact Black Dog Riders have had upon improving the mental health awareness across the nation. The Black Dog ride is for depression and

they will be coming to Townsville in July

2014. There have been many Lions clubs

involved in past rides and let’s hope that

we in Q2 can assist when the time arrives

next year.

Thank you to the Clubs who purchased Christmas Pins, Cook Books, Biros and Trading pins this year. I am sure that you know that your donations will go to very worthwhile causes. I would take this opportunity to say that the more we support our MD and Local Projects that there will be people in our own community that will benefit from your Club’s participation.

I would like you to think about Children with Cancer, and what ALCCRF is doing in that area, ALCMRF and what is happening there, we have just supported a walker for a child with Quadra Cerebral Palsy in Q2 and our help and research in these areas is very vital to the betterment of those children.

For Australian Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, please get involved with Australia’s Biggest BBQ which is happening in April. For any other foundation that is run by Lions, please give it your thoughts when donating. You know that all your money, donations etc will go straight to the cause.

Thankyou to the Lions of Australia and your communities for the wonderful support of our goal to achieve 100% survival of children diagnosed with cancer. We have provided a variety of opportunities for you to

be part of this significant Lions program. You have responded to the call and we thank you sincerely.

The Foundation has been operating for only a few years and we are seeing results. However, sadly, there ARE still in excess of 600 children diagnosed with cancer each year AND approximately 25% will not survive. We have much work to do.

Lions are emerging as a significant player in the fight against childhood cancer in this country. Your Trustees have set a goal of raising $1 million annually to fund the best clinical research into childhood cancer in this country. Australian research is highly regarded worldwide.

Whitsunday Lions, Thong Christmas Tree

Whitsunday Lions Club celebrated its Christmas

party on the 17th Dec at Hydeaway Bay with a

very different Xmas tree this year, one entirely

made up of old thongs. These had washed up on

the beach at the home of our Clubs President

Warwick McAllister. And he made them into a

very unique Aussie looking tree.

Reetta Patinen was a Youth Exchange Student hosted by Trinity Bay and Ingham Lions Clubs earlier this year. She also attended the International Youth Camp at Camp Kanga before returning home to Finland.
