The Kansas City Boat and Sports Show at
the H. Roe Bartle Hall starts January 10th
through the 13th, 2019. We need members
to represent MTFA at our booth. This is a
great opportunity to showcase our club to
people of the area that have not heard of
the Missouri Trout Fishermen’s Associa-
tion or the Project Healing Waters Chapter.
At the Christmas Party there will be a sign
up sheet with the day and times when you can help the club. Some members
demonstrate fly tying while other members just hang out, answer questions and
hand out flyers. Signing up gives you free admission to the Sports Show. There
will be plenty of time for you to wander around for yourself and view all the
exhibits. Do not forget to sign up.
The E-Board
We would like to wish all a very “fishy”, safe and healthy New Year.
Our club had a very busy 2018 and we are looking forward to the events we
have planned for 2019. If you have an idea or a idea for a club program or out-
ing please let us know. Your ideas are important to us.
The main events that are in the clubs immediate future are the Sport Show,
Fishing Trip to Taneycomo, Fly Tying Classes and the Lunker Dinner. It’s
important as a club member to be involved. Mark your calendars and join in
on the fun and bring a friend.
Thank You for your support, The E-Board

President’s Message
It’s winter time, could be a little cold but lets
go fishing. I have a friend that has a saying
“If it’s 40 or below, Stan don’t go”. As I get
older the really cold weather doesn’t appeal
to me that much either, but I have been fish-
ing when it was 12 degrees above zero for
steelhead. Our club has always tried to make
a trip to Branson in January to fish Taneyco-
mo. Weather permitting, January 19th and
20th are the dates, should the weather not
cooperate we will change the date to another weekend. Plan on meeting at the
shelter house below the dam behind the Hatchery close to outlet #2 around 10:00
AM. Get your cold weather gear out and come join us. If you are new to fly
fishing and need some help we will be there to help you. It’s a great fishery, lot’s
of things to do, places to eat and many places to stay, so come join us. For more
information contact any MTFA Board Member.
Taneycomo - MTFA Winter Club Outing
Another year is behind us and there is much to look forward to for the new year.
Our first outing of the year is at Taneycomo (see above). This is a trip I antici-
pate like a child waiting for Christmas. It will also test you for how well you
are prepared for cold weather. As long as daytime temperatures climb above
freezing, expect a great day of fishing. The important thing to remember about
keeping warm is to dress in many layers, loose fitting clothing, wool socks and
an emergency change of clothing. Also a fish rag to dry your hands with.
To warm-up my hands, I prefer light woolen gloves (like Uncle Sam’s glove
inserts) but the modern fishing gloves are good too.
Table Rock Lake has had recent rains to bring the lake level from several feet
low to normal pool and a little higher. Right now they are generating power all
day. We don’t need any extra rain like the South has been getting. There are
phone numbers and web sites to check on water conditions and an App for your
cell phone. For android I searched the Play Store for “USACE Little Rock” and
that should take you to the app to install. I would guess Apple phones would be
similar but I am not familiar with them.
From my computer I check conditions at http://www.swl-wc.usace.army.mil/
pages/reservoirs-o.htm They keep having server trouble and I have had a hard
time finding it working. When I started typing it was working and now I
checked again and it doesn’t work. The other source for water conditions is the
forecast for power generation. That is part of the phone app too or from the
web go to https://www.swpa.gov/generationschedules.aspx and check on
today’s conditions. The forecast for tomorrow gets posted around 4 pm and on
Friday (around 4 pm) you will see the forecast for the whole weekend. So if
you are a wade fisherman, it really pays to check these conditions and forecast
before you go out. Hope to see you at Taneycomo. David

ler at: [email protected] or call (816-673-9863).

2019 New Years Resolutions
It’s time again to sit down and think about those New Years Resolutions. I am not talking about losing weight,
exercising more or cutting out sweets etc., I am thinking about things that will make you a better fisherperson.
Here is a quick list of items to give you some ideas. Enjoy, Gary
I will take some fly casting lessons,
I will fish more often,
I will practice casting at least once a week,
I will learn how to double haul,
I will introduce someone new to the sport fly fishing,
I will learn to cast with my opposite hand,
I will go to a new destination to fish,
I will take more pictures of what you see on your adventure, not just hero shots,
I will take a fly fishing class.
I will budget for that new gear or and extra day of instruction with a guide/instructor.
1.5 pounds trout or salmon, or arctic char - 2 large fish fillets with skin on the bottom. 2 tablespoons olive oil more, if needed. 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning dried thyme, oregano, parsley, combined. 1/4 teaspoon salt to taste. 4 garlic cloves diced. 3 tablespoons lemon juice freshly squeezed. 2 tablespoons white wine

Our Greater Kansas City Program
of Project Healing Waters Fly Fish-
ing is pleased to honor David Bag-
ley as our Participant of the Year
and Ron Carruthers as our Volun-
teer of the Year. Presentations were
made at our December meeting at
Rainbow Fly Shop.
Bagley has been active in fly tying,
rod building and fly casting, not
only as a participant but in mentor-
ing other participants. He has also
been leading the Beginners Table at
our monthly fly tying sessions.
Bagley also served on the barbeque
team that participated in St. Rob-
ert’s Parish’s Holy Smoke Compe-
tition, a fundraiser for the Veterans
Community Project.
Carruthers stepped into a role as
one of our Assistant Program Leads
to help with the growth of our pro-
gram. He also has devoted consid-
erable time in helping us in the ef-
fort to register all volunteers and
participants into the CRM database
that will help simplify order forms
and trip nominations. Congratula-
tions, David and Ron!

Fly Casting Practice Tips
1. Practice Casting from Your Knees. The extent of most angler ’s casting practice occurs on flat ground;
a park, a golf course, a beach, a dock, etc. There’s nothing wrong with this, in fact its highly recommend
practicing your cast without the distraction of a fish present. However, those who have spent a considera-
ble amount of time practicing on the lawn often find they have difficulty casting while fishing on foot.
Why? Because they don’t consider the height lost while wading in the water! To remedy this, practicing
your cast while kneeling on the ground it’s a great drill for keeping your fly line up off the water, even
while wading in relatively deep water. If you will be wading deep? Try casting while sitting flat on your
butt.
2. Practice with an Appropriate Fly. While casting with a virtually weightless piece of yarn feels good,
its often not realistic. When practicing for an upcoming trip, it is highly recommend practicing with a fly
that’s roughly the same size and weight of what you’ll be fishing (with the hook bend cut off, please). In
fact, tie high-vis versions of your favorite flies (with the hook bend cut off) to use solely as practice flies.
Not only does practicing with an appropriate fly beforehand help to get a feel for the energy needed to
form efficient loops and make successful presentations, it also helps build awareness of where your fly is
in relation to the end of your fly line for more accurate casts as well.
3. Practice Casting Across Different Planes, Guides often get asked whether they prefer to cast over-
head or sidearm when casting for bonefish. The answer! Whatever is required to get the fly to the fish.
Great casters don’t limit themselves to one casting plane, but rather adjust accordingly to deliver the best
presentation possible in the given conditions. There are advantages and disadvantages to casting overhead,
sidearm and even off your opposite shoulder. The more ways you are comfortable with the more opportu-
nities you’ll have to catch the fish.
Dedicate time to practice casting you will be happy you did.
