Spanish Cove has implemented a dedicated six-passenger Spanish Cove van to serve residents. The van is circulating continuously on Spanish Cove’s campus picking up and dropping off residents at campus destinations and shuttle stops. We have made an attempt to create an ideal shuttle service, but realize there is always room for improvement. Please feel free to voice your requests to Susan Ellis at (405) 354-5906. We want this to be a positive experience for you!

Executive Administrator’s Corner

Some of the best heartfelt advice our staff receive

from Spanish Cove residents is the importance

of good friends in life. To have close friends is a

sustaining treasure. While family is important, never

underestimate the value of solid friendships.

For most, family, rather than friends, becomes the

object of our attention. We groom, nurture and obsess

over our children when they are young; desiring them

to be better than us. Yet, the children ultimately leave

our home and start their own families, often in another

community. You still get to see them but it is more on their terms and less on yours.

Good friends keep you growing and going with or without the presence of

family. True friends, however, are like gold. They are the people who know your

heart and accept you for who you are, warts and all. Their love for you is absolute and

unbending as is your love for them! They are able to see the best in you, even when you

are at your worst. You have their complete and total acceptance!

Common lore says the average person will have two to three true friends in their

lifetime. One of them is often a spouse. It seems like a sad statistic though I fear it is

true. Aging only compounds the risk of losing someone so important.

If you have more true friends than average, you have earned something that most

would be jealous of. Yet, to gain total acceptance by someone else comes with great risk. To

earn such an honor means putting yourself out there in a way that exposes your weaknesses.

It’s about freeing your honesty and letting them see your soul. Most of us don’t like risking

that type of exposure.

One hundred and three-year old Loraine Harris knows something about making

great friends. She has a knack of revealing her essence in a way that makes others learn

comfortably about her. At the same time, she’s digging to uncover the things in you that are

also in her. Although Loraine has lost several true friends in her life, she will never give up

looking for another. A great secret of successful aging? Perhaps!

If you are looking for good friends, you are not alone. You may have a lengthy list of

Facebook friends, but don’t take stock in that number being anywhere close to those you

could really confide in or count on. Facebook may be useful for keeping up with people

but it is not a tool for earning good friends. You have to put yourself in front of people

for that. Best get out of the house.

Don’t ever stop looking for people who are a lot like you. I hope one of them is me

because I don’t ever want to be caught short of people I can count on as I grow older.

Thank you Spanish Cove! Please keep sharing your wisdom with all of your staff.

Sincerely, Don

GOOD FRIENDS

Don Blose

Welcome New Residents

Bob Smith was born in Webb City, Oklahoma and was the fifth of six children. He has always lived in Oklahoma except for a few years in the Navy which took him to

Oxnard, California. He graduated from Crooked Oak High School in 1952 and from Oklahoma State University in 1960. He went to work for Western Electric immediately after graduation and retired from there in 1989.

Bob was married 63 years to Joyce, who died earlier this year. They moved to Mustang in 1963. He has two daughters, both married; one lives in Mustang, OK and the other in Albuquerque, NM. He has 4 grandchildren spread across the country—

Fort Worth, Seattle, Ames, and OKC. He takes great delight in his three great-granddaughters ages 3, 5, and 7.

Bob and his wife enjoyed square dancing and traveling even before he retired, but retirement gave them more time for both. Bob also took a woodcarving class which led to

more classes and teaching woodcarving classes. He has won numerous first place prizes at the OK State Fair and other woodcarving contests. Some of his woodcarvings can be seen

in the OKC Bombing Memorial chapel. He currently participates in three woodcarving groups each week.

Bob is an active member of Mustang Kiwanis and Mustang Christian Church. He has helped these groups with many projects including delivering holiday food baskets to needy

families and building Habit for Humanity houses. Welcome to Spanish Cove, Bob!

Rachel Smith grew up in Rogers County, Oklahoma near the the small town of Inola, graduating from high school in 1944. She attended Tulsa Business College to improve her

secretarial skills, after which she was employed by an oil well supply company. She met and married her husband, Edwin F. Smith, on Dec. 24, 1953 and her life’s adventures began.

Edwin was employed by Amerada Petroleum Co. as engineer on a Geophysicalexploration crew, so their first stop was in South Texas where they were stationed in several

small towns near where the crew was working. In late 1955 Ed’s employment changed to following the Military/Industrial contracts which employed engineers. First, it was General Electric Co. in Fairbanks, Alaska, maintaining a remote-site Dew Line radar. Here, Rachel started her various jobs through the years by working at the Fairbanks Post Office. She followed Ed along to Syracuse, NY, Phoenix, AZ, Orlando, FL, Sierra Vista (Ft. Huachuca), AZ, Huntsville, AL and Flanders, NJ, working at whatever job was available. On July 4,1973, they realized their dream of retiring (both from IBM) and moved to their farm near Bell, FL which they purchased in 1960.

They enjoyed 30 years of working a cow-calf operation together. Ed baled the hay and plantedthe winter rye for cattle feed. Rachel planted and worked the large garden and kept the freezer

full of canning jars of vegetables. Together they managed the cattle and enjoyed the activities of the many recreational activities that area of Florida provided—the many springs along the Suwanee River and crabbing and scalloping on the Gulf Coast. In the 1990’s they were able to take a number of tours in the United States as well as Canada, Mexico and overseas.

In April 2003 they again retired to Alpine, TX to build a house on an acreage they purchased during a vacation trip to the Big Bend area in 1994. Alpine is a retirement destination for many people from the music and art professions and they share their talents with the community.

The local college, Sul Ross University, also provides regular entertainment options. She enjoyed singing with the Presbyterian Church choir and Ed was happy practicing bridge. Sadly, Ed developed Alzheimer’s and died Nov. 29, 2013. Rachel sold their house and move to Corn, OK to be near family, where she’s lived the last 3 years. Welcome to Spanish Cove, Rachel!

Life The Way You Want It

We know that walking is good for us and guidelines suggest that seniors regularly engage in some kind of physical activity to gain health benefits

and reduce risk of diseases. As we get older, motor control and strength as well as reflexes decrease. Walking improves circulation, strengthens muscles and bones, slows mental decline, helps you perform activities of daily living and the things you like and want to do.

Recent studies have found that moderate and brisk exercise such as walking, was especially important for keeping seniors active and independent. Walking pace, distance, and leisure-time activity, can be improved with a walking program.

The State Senior Games are right around the corner with the Race Walk/Track & Field event on September 16. The race walk is a 1500 meter brisk-paced walking course that is just shy of a mile. Let’s start walking and/or training for the senior games Thursday, July 6th at 8:15 A.M. when the Wellness Department will begin hosting a 30-minute walking session. We will meet at the swing every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Whether you decide to participate in the State Games or not, walking is a great way to exercise at any age and we hope that you’ll join us for a wonderful morning walk.

Happy 4th of July! The holiday brings to mind images of fireworks, cookouts, trips to the lake and family gatherings. But it is much more than that. I know I tend to forget that

the 4th is a celebration of the 13 colonies gaining their independence, of those brave men and women who stood firm so we, the future generations, could have freedom. Regardless of your political views, that has to mean something to us. I am so thankful for all the brave souls who have fought hard to keep our country free. So, this 4th of July take a moment to give thanks to all who made this happen.

May I give my own personal thanks, not just to them men and women who fought, but to the spouses and children who stayed home and kept the country going, who did without so that today we could celebrate freely. Thank you.

Now, let’s move on to our celebrations. Living in Yukon means you get to celebrate twice with fireworks on July 3rd and 4th. Join us on the rooftop of the Pavilion at dusk on both days to see a spectacular fireworks show (chairs will be provided). For daytime festivities, join us on July 3rd for a Patriotic Sing-Along in Plaza Hall led by our own Shirley McDaniel at 3 p.m. Then on the 4th cool off in Plaza Hall at 2 p.m. with the movie Yankee Doodle Dandy.

The fun doesn’t stop there. The rest of the month is filled with exciting events and happenings, all leading up to a Summer Fun Dance with Ronny Kaye on July 28th.

I am so thankful I live in this country and even more thankful I get to work at a great place like Spanish Cove. Enjoy your month!
