On Saturday, our "Felices Fiestas" holidaycelebration ­­ our biggest yet­­ reminded us all of theremarkably compassionate and kindhearted work of ourpartners and staff without whom none of it would be possible(see below in the lead story). 'FelicesFiestas' BringsTogetherCommunity andPhilanthropyfor Families inNeed

Set in a North Pole­fashioned metropolis, Para Los Niños heldits annual "Felices Fiestas" holiday celebration for over 1,000children and families served by Student and CommunityServices. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Senate President proTem Kevin de León were all on hand to welcome attendees.

Held on the campus of the Charter Middle School, children andfamilies received gifts of meals, beauty products and toys.

"I am proud to partner with an organization with a proven trackrecord to foster community and this event is indicative of that,"said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. "Para Los Niños is a primeexample of the program Los Angeles needs to uplift our familiesliving on Skid Row and throughout Downtown and South L.A."

Upon arrival, guests were serenaded by a Mariachi band, andwere outfitted with holiday hats and 'passports' detailing theactivities, including street hockey with the LA Kings, financialliteracy with Manufacturers Bank, food, a live DJ and muchmore. After three hours and 2,000 tamales later, each familywent home with toy­filled goodie bags. "We are in this together to make sure hardworking Angelenoshave a happy and safe holiday season," said Senator Kevin deLeón (D­24). "I commend Para Los Niños for its mission to helpclose the achievement gap while supporting the complex needsof families and communities."

All in the Family: Nurturing ParentingClasses Improving Familial Dynamics

Every morning you canfind Sheila Hernandez­Celidon going over theday's agenda with herchildren Sarah and Aaronbefore their time forschool nears. In theafternoons­­ and inbetween work shifts inthe Garment District­­Sheila often rushes to theparent­teacher meetingsto track the academicprogress of her kids. "I grew up in Mexico Cityas an only child and

recall being five years old when my parents told me they wereseparating­­ that's when my single mother decided to migrate tothe United States. Once here, she worked incredibly long hoursto provide a stable home but I always found myself alone afterschool. I knew that my mother cared but she had little time forme because she needed to work; we needed to get by. Now asa parent, even though I work like my mother, I strive to beheavily involved in my children's academics because Iunderstand the value of that support," said Sheila. She credits the Nurturing Parenting Program at the Tina andRick J. Caruso Early Education Center for helping build herfamily's tightly­knit relationship. "The Nurturing Parenting Classes have become a solidfoundation for parents and teachers alike looking to buildhealthy family dynamics. The road to success begins in thehome and we're proud to offer these invaluable resources to thefamilies who want them," said Dr. Angela Capone, VP of EarlyEducation. Center, Sheila makes it a point to encourage other parents toenroll in the Nurturing Parenting Program. For the Hernandez­Celidon brood, it's about more than just telling their children thatthey love them­­ it's about showing them. With a focus on appropriate expectations, empathy, discipline,family roles, power & independence, the program is anevidence based curriculum developed by Dr. StephenBavolek, a recognized leader in the fields of child abuse andneglect treatment and prevention, and parenting education. The next schedule of classes begins the second week ofJanuary­­ the 10­15 week long course meets once per week fortwo­hour sessions.
