‘Tis the Season

There has been a whirlwind of activity this fall with the Illinois AFL-CIO convention, a national and state-wide election, and an election at Local 10-208. The results of the national and state-wide election are well known by now and the results of the CFM election are contained in this issue. Congratulations to all candidates who ran for office. Win or lose you made an effort to bring your voice, ideas and opinions to the membership. Thanks to those who voted. You understand the importance of participating in the election process. Your opinion was heard as well.

With the elections of November behind us and the holiday season looming, one of the most important things we can do during this season is to enjoy a concert, opera, musical theater or club performance. There are more opportunities to hear live music at this time of year than at any other. Encourage neighbors, friends and family to enjoy and support live music performances and performers. Give a young listener the opportunity to experience the excitement of a live professional performance. I am reminded of the numerous times I have heard from parents and grandparents that their family tradition of attending the symphony, the opera, “The Nutcracker” or going to downtown to a musical or a holiday concert started when their parents, grandparents, aunt or uncle first took them to a musical performance as a child. How many musicians and audience members can trace their love of music to a single life-changing performance they witnessed? We must share the excitement of live performance with each new generation to ensure an enduring audience that will support live music. What a wonderful gift to give this holiday season.

Finally, on behalf of all of us here at the CFM, I wish you, peace, joy and harmony this holiday season and always; and may the New Year bring the blessings of health, happiness and work.

ONLINE DUES PAYMENTYou can now pay your membership dues and work dues online by logging on to the members only section of the CFM website. Once you are in, click on the “Pay Your Dues Online” on the right hand side. Then click on the “Pay My Dues Online” link on the new page. You will then be directed to a secure payment page and simply follow the prompts. You can use MC, VISA or Discover for credit card payments. You can also use your checking or savings account

for an ACH payment. Please note that pension payments cannot be made through this service. Once your payment is made, you will receive an email confirmation. If you have any questions, please give me a call at 312-782-0063 or send me an email to [email protected]

As the holidays are fast approaching, I would like to extend my warmest regards to you and your families for a joyous holiday season and a healthy & prosperous New Year.

Spencer Aloisio

THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER THREE YEAR TERMI would like to thank each of you for the support you have given us over the past three years. We were once again successful in getting our slate of candidates reelected. We have a very active Board of Directors that listen to the needs of the membership and work to resolve problems in ways that benefit EACH of the members. Please never hesitate in giving any of your officers a call. We are all here to address your needs.

FILING CONTRACTSNon-filing of contracts has become a big issue. If you lead a job and don’t file a contract, you are liable for the payments to your side musicians regardless if you receive payment for the job or not. A contract on file with the Union protects

you and your side musicians. Call the Union and ask for “Quick File”. We will complete all your paperwork for you. We will even provide you with a spreadsheet of wages and benefits to present to your employer. This is your guarantee that you will receive Union wages for the engagement, that all of your musicians will receive a pension payment and the proper work dues will be reported. If you lead a job and a contract is not on file with the Union, you may be brought up on charges. (See bylaw Section VIII, G.1.)

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!It’s hard to believe that another Holiday season is upon us. I would like to wish each of you a very happy Holiday and all the best for the coming New Year.

SCHULLER, CUBEThe invitation to attend Cube Contemporary Chamber Ensemble’s 3rd Annual “2010 Cube Award for New Music” night at Jazz Showcase was a great night out and a chance to meet and shake the hand of the award recipient, GUNTHER SCHULLER. The man is acclaimed in so many pursuits it leaves

one breathless—composer, conductor, horn player, author, historian and jazz musician. He turns 85 this November, spry and articulate with a firm handshake and visible interest in all

things musical. Four of his compositions (from 1958 to 1999) were played; he commended the performances.

JAZZ IN ROOM 43We hope that as of this reading the Hyde Park Jazz Society no longer has its zoning department woes and their presentations are still swinging in Room 43. Recent programs have included saxophonist PAT MALLINGER, appearing with DAN TRUDELL on piano; DENNIS CARROLL, bass; and ERNIE ADAMS, drums. “One of Hyde Park’s favorite sons”, guitarist PETER LERNER who has played with and backed such luminaries as LEE KONITZ, GLADYS KNIGHT, The Fifth Dimension, TITO PUENTE and PATTI LaBELLE and has two CDs to his credit, South Side and Cry for Peace also was a recent performer at Room 43. ART HOYLE presented a tribute to

PAUL SERRANO, former trumpeter with COUNT BASIE, who owned and operated the P.S. Recording Studios in Chicago from the mid-1960s to the 1990s.** * * * The (fourth annual) Hyde Park Jazz Festival, that ingenious 13-hour music fest occurring in various venues through Hyde Park, had such notable performers as ORBERT DAVIS, NICOLE MITCHELL, WILLIE PICKENS, ART HOYLE, BOBBY LEWIS, HENRY JOHNSON, PAULINHO GARCIA & GREG FISHMAN, JOHN WRIGHT, the JOHN BURNETT Orchestra and JEFF LINDBERG’s Chicago Jazz Orchestra.

APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE FOR…..RACHEL BARTON PINE on her recent WFMT interview. She played so interestingly and well; explained her musical loves in such a compelling, happy way; her youthful, eager voice made a Sunday afternoon delightful…… ANNE-SOPHIE MUTTER for her last minute fill-in for ailing conductor

RICCARDO MUTI for the CSO Symphony Ball concert at Orchestra Hall. Between solos, she conducted Beethoven’s Violin Concerto from the violin, “not only [turning] in a wonderfully poised

performance, but also secured the utmost support from the orchestra members, who responded to her nods and waves of

the bow (when she wasn’t playing) with polished professionalism. Everybody was eager to do their very best for their ailing and absent boss”: Tribune critic JOHN von RHEIN.

Coming quickly on the heels of his recent auspicious debut with CSO, the 69 year-old Muti was forced to cancel the remainder of his fall residency due to illness and “local physicians’ advice to fly home to Milan to consult with his doctors”. Hopes are high for his quick recovery to assure his return for his winter residency February 3-19….WILLIAM JON GRAY, Music of the Baroque’s chorus director, who filled in for conductor JANE GLOVER who was recuperating from an appendectomy during MOB’s 40th season opener.

APPEARANCES OF NOTEBrazilian guitarist/singer PAULINHO GARCIA with his quartet and featured guest trumpeter ART DAVIS and percussionist DEDÉ SAMPAIO were the musicians to be “On Stage With”, at the Auditorium Theatre’s unique summer

musical presentation. Paulinho’s program intermingled Brazilian rhythms with music from

trumpeter CHET BAKER’s songbook together for a concert of extraordinary accomplishment and audience enjoyment. Already recognized as a Chicago treasure, Paulinho’s gift of those warm,

Chris Cameron is the fourth Cameron sibling I know. I had read Julia Cameron’s “The Artist’s Way—a spiritual way to higher creativity”; sister Connie is the widow of the late saxophonist Al Porth; Lorrie Cameron Burrows is the garden designer who worked magic on my yard. Reflecting on his childhood Chris said, “There were seven of us; Mom’s line was

she wanted one kid that was fat, dumb and happy and she wound up with four writers, two musicians and a portrait painter; an amazing bunch.” Of

course, what we are about here is Chris, the musician nicknamed “Hambone”!

[It’s] “shrouded in mystery in Mobile, Alabama, some 35 years ago. My older brother was a guitarist who went to a Jesuit liberal arts school down there and over the summer I played in his band. The name just mutated out of a couple of other nicknames. The earliest recollection I have of wanting to be a musician was seeing Booker T and the M.G.s on ‘American Bandstand’ when I was 7 or 8. I walked around with a tennis racket being ‘Duck’ Dunn, the bass player; and an album on Vanguard called ‘Chicago, the Blues Today, Vol.2’ a compilation: Homesick James and the Dusters, and great Otis Rush stuff, but there are half a dozen tracks on there from the James Cotton Blues Quartet, featuring Otis Spann on piano, James Cotton, S.P. Leary, Peewee Madison on guitar…no bass player. So the piano is waaay up and that record still kills me if I listen to it now.

“Basically I was drawn to Rhythm & Blues growing up in Libertyville, Illinois, not exactly a hotbed of R & B, and this

happens —so it’s one of life’s mysteries. Everything I do is an outgrowth of that. I was lucky enough to get work with Mavis Staples some years back working with an old friend, [producer] Jim Tullio, doing some tracks live with her. I’m comin’ down the stairs with the Wurlitzer electric piano and the skinny white legs in the shorts, y’know. I had not yet met her sister who goes ‘Yawrrr Hambone?’ and–yeah, that’s me.

“I’ve worked professionally since I was 15. All I wanted to play was Chicago blues [like] Otis Spann, Muddy Water’s piano player. I went to Eastern Illinois, in Charleston for a year as a performance major and played in the jazz band, but I realized they were primarily cranking out classical players and teachers, neither of which I was destined to be. I didn’t set out to be a studio player but was fortunate enough to find some people who liked what I did and if you’ve got something someone can use, you sort of gravitate that way.

“My earliest studio work was for Ken Nordine and you’d get to the studio and there’d be no charts, nothing written, some clients and Ken. You’d sort of pull the music out of the sky [for] whatever the product was. I was on some of the early Levi’s [clothier commercials] spots when [keyboardist] Terry Fryer left to work with Cliff Colnot in the late ‘70s or early ‘80s.

“And then I’ve played in Cheveré since the Civil War! [actually] 1978. There is a whole vocabulary there in terms of the rhythms and how you approach that music. You learn by playing with people who know that stuff. One of the great things about the band is that we do real legit Afro-Cuban and real legit Brazilian

grooves and Howard’s (Levy) tunes are an education. He’s an amazing composer. I always say there’s more chords in one set of Cheveré than in the rest of my life put together. In addition to being a tremendous innovator on the harmonica, he’s a wonderful, wonderful piano player. You work with people who know things that you don’t so your learning process never stops.

When I play with Cheveré, my rig has nothing Japanese, no midi, everything’s out of manufacture: a 1949 BV Hammond organ and Leslie [speaker], a real Rhodes piano, a real Clavinet and three Moogs. Howard plays acoustic piano and harmonica. So it’s a lot of gear and we barely fit into the Green Mill. My racks clear the bathroom door by about one 16th of an inch and they have to go right there. When we’re done and trying to load Cheveré out, its jam packed with people who need to get in and out of the bathroom as you’re sitting there trying to unplug the stuff, you got 18 guys flying around to get things out while they’re loading a quintet through the side door…. that 20 minutes is remarkable!

“I’m largely a self-taught guy and forever shoring up the legit end, teaching myself to write horn charts. I’m a rhythm and blues piano player at the core, but I have a schizophrenic resumé. I do a lot of different things.”

One of those different things is his own band, Jambon. Chris told of “looking for a name and there it was—the French word for ham, which plays a few different ways. The French already had jambon.com and jambon.net tied up so I finally was able to go with jambonband.com for the website. Our record has been out about a year. I had a

bunch of songs brewing for a long time. Tommy Sanchez, from Liquid Soul is on one guitar; Alan Burroughs, a great

New York R&B guy on guitar and vocals; Jose Rossy, from Weather Report on percussion; Ron Hall on bass; Khari Parker, drums; Mark Ohlsen,

trumpet; Steve Eisen, tenor and baritone sax; David Gross, trombone and vocalists Shawn Christopher and Michael Scott from Sonia Dada, the band I did six records with.

“I have known Shawn for many years. The first record I ever played on was her brother Gavin Christopher’s 2nd solo album at Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom Studios on the North Side when I was

maybe 22. So when I finally got the people I wanted to make the record with, we went to CRC and did 11 basic tracks in two days; then [it took] the better part of a year to finish it. I did horns at Mark Ohlsen’s place. He plays with Cheveré and has his own studio. I was able to mix at Deaf Dog with John Ovnik. [Grammy-nominated producer, composer Ovnik owns Chicago-based Deaf Dog Studio.] Response to the record has been good so the band venture is ongoing.

“I’ve done a lot of film work with Richie Davis, a wonderful session guitar player whose brother, Andrew, directed ‘The Fugitive’ and other films. Richie and I worked on a lot of those projects. ‘The Guardian’, the last film we worked on, was a Disney Company star epic with Ashton Kutcher and Kevin Costner a few

years back. Richie and I co-wrote and co-produced four tunes and performed on camera.

“I had enough credits as a composer [to be] asked to participate in ASCAP’s legislative lobby. They flew me to Washington, D.C. last spring. I was having dinner with Dennis Kucinich on my left and the guy who wrote ‘That’s Life’ for Sinatra on my right and having meetings with key legislators—like Rep. Henry Waxman–-about intellectual property rights and new media, a huge problem when you have YouTube slinging everybody’s stuff around for free and feature films leaving L.A., going on a satellite feed and doing the orchestras in Europe so they don’t have to pay pension and residuals,” he fumed “those are the difficult issues that are in play now.”

luscious Brazilian songs, intricate rhythms and words, all the while making it look so effortless, is a not-to-be-missed pleasure. * * * * *

The BOB DOGAN trio, with pianist Dogan, bassist DAN DeLORENZO and drummer JOE ADAMIK played Katrina’s recently and if you missed them, go to www.cdbaby.com/cd/BobDogan to hear tunes from Dogan’s latest CD My Blues Roots.

NANCY SAYS GOODBYEFinishing her 41st consecutive year (only missed one year when her son was born) as organist for the White Sox, NANCY FAUST gave a sweet interview to the Chicago Tribune about her ball park experiences and imminent retirement. Her fan base is enormous; she has made the White Sox milieu a generational, family-oriented box-office hit for lo, these many years. Well done, Nancy.

FYIGuitarist ERNIE HINES, a Local 10-208 member for many years, is the subject of DANIEL MARGOLIS’

interview article in Wax Poetics magazine, July-August issue #42.The author recounts Hines’ birth in Jackson, Mississippi in 1938, his move to Duluth, Minnesota, and later moves to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His Christian upbringing put him in touch with Gospel music early on. It led to his writing and recording for Chess Records in Chicago. More than fifty of his songs have been recorded. He has performed around the country, including JESSE JACKSON’s ‘Black Expo” in 1972 and in L.A for the Watt/Stax Music Festival playing his hit record, “Electrified Love” for 90,000 music fans.He has worked with OTTO PREMINGER and HUGO MONTENEGRO setting up a soundtrack for the movie Hurry Sundown, filmed in Baton Rouge. In 2000, he incorporated his two companies, Colorful Music Publishing and Baby Blue Records.

TANYA CAREY and husband GERALD presented a cello/flute program, “Golden Celebration” at Ganz Hall of Roosevelt University in honor of their 50 years making music together. They were joined by pianist CINDY TROWBRIDGE and harpist LILLIAN LAU. The free concert included works

by DANZI, LeCLAIRE, OTT, BARON, GAUBERT, HUE, BACH and the premier of a commissioned work by EFRAIN AMAYA.

* * * * * Bassist DENNIS KEITH JOHNSON played in the PHIL PORTER Trio for the second reunion concert, Chase Revisited, in Malden, Massachusetts. “Considered the most dynamic of all the horn bands from the ‘70s, Chase, the legendary 9-piece jazz/rock band inspired generations of trumpet players.” The original band was led by trumpeter BILL CHASE who died with three other band members in a plane crash in 1974.

TIME TO GIGGLEI asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn’t work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.or…The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas! or…Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.and….I used to be indecisive. Now I’m not sure.

Darwin R. Apel, 83, of Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood died in Midwest Care Hospice Center in Skokie on Friday, October 8, 2010. His wife of 46 years, Carol Apel, was at his side. Mr. Apel was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1995 and after successful initial treatment he survived leukemia in 2000 and a mitral valve replacement in 2005. Mr. Apel had fought the metastasis of the prostate cancer since late October 2009. Born on the west side to Helene (Miller) and George Apel on April 22, 1927, he was the youngest of three children. As a young boy, Mr. Apel’s mother toted him around the city so that he could sing at different synagogues. “I’ve been performing professionally since I was seven years old,” Mr. Apel would tell people. “Sometimes the money I made supported the family,” he said, “but there was always a little left over for me to buy some candy or ice cream, and once I was able to buy the chemistry set I’d coveted from the corner pharmacy.” Throughout his life Mr. Apel was well-known in many social and theatrical groups. Following in his father’s footsteps, Mr. Apel joined the Navy in the 1940s and served in World War II. Upon his return he enrolled in college at Actors Company, a theater college in Chicago. He was near graduation when the Navy called him up again to serve in the Korean War as a hospital corpsman. In the mid- to late-1950s Mr. Apel worked on the New York stage, as both an actor and stage manager. It was during this time that Mr. Apel toured the country with a production of Inherit the Wind with Melvyn Douglas. He spoke of this tour for years as he was tickled by the fact that in the show he carried a sign reading “Down with Darwin.” Later in the 1950’s, he worked for WGN television as the voice of Homer the Horse. As a singer of Jewish, Yiddish and Hebrew music, Mr. Apel’s beautiful voice made him a popular choice for weddings and Bar Mitzvahs throughout the 1970s and 1980s, singing with the Jewish Musicians Club and sometimes with his sister, who sang under the name Joy Marlowe. He later paired up with longtime friend and fellow entertainer, the late Marvin Zelonky, to create the guitar playing, singing folk duo Darwin and Marv. Their act was a coffee house and party favorite for many years. Television viewers will remember the work of Darwin R. Apel as film editor of the wildly popular 1970s television program Wild Kingdom with Marlin Perkins. In the 1990s Mr. Apel played the role of Doc in Marriot Lincolnshire’s production of West Side

Story, Al Lewis in The Sunshine Boys at Drury Lane Theatre with Byrne Piven, Dr. Angoff in the Chicago Theatre Company’s 1990 production of Fathers and Other Strangers, starred as Sammy the Angel in Love in the Catskills, and directed the stage play Courage Untold at the Avenue Theatre. For more than a decade

and as recently as July of this year, audiences have enjoyed Mr. Apel’s portrayals of many old time radio characters in AFTRA/SAG Senior Radio Players’ live radio shows at the Cultural Center, formerly the old Chicago Library. Most notable was his portrayal of The Lone Ranger. Mr. Apel was a long time member of both AFTRA and SAG and The Three Sheeters Entertainers Club and The Showmen’s League, and served as president of Equity Library

Theatre (ELT) . He spent many years doing mock trials for the benefit of the law students at Loyola University’s School of Law. For the past five years Mr. Apel worked meticulously at keeping the books for The Paintbrush, the Lakeview-based children’s art studio owned by his daughters, Melanie and Mindy. Mr. Apel’s youngest fans knew him as “Mr. Darwin” or “Mr. Saturday Night” in reference to “Everybody Loves Saturday Night,” the song he was so well known for singing every Monday morning for the past several years with his good friend, Lincoln Park Zoo’s Professor Boonie (Michael O’Toole). Mr. Apel was president of the local IATSE union (the labor union representing technicians, artisans and craftspersons in the entertainment industry) in the mid- 1970s. In the 1980s he became the first president of the Lincoln Elementary School Band Association (now called ALESMA). Friends of Mr. Apel say he was an honest man who lived by the rules. He always wanted to improve things, not tear them apart, says his wife. With an unmistakable twinkle in his eye, Mr. Apel’s presence would immediately warm and brighten any room. He always had a joke ready, and a quick smile, and a story for anyone who had the time to spare. The patriarch of the Apel Family, Mr. Apel is survived by his wife – the love of his life for 46 years – Carol (nee Davies); his daughters, Melanie Ann and Mindy S. Apel; his young grandsons Hayden Seth and Alec Noah Apel; four nieces and two nephews and their spouses; two great nieces and five great nephews, their spouses and children; and the most loving group of friends, many of whom go back more than 60 years.

Al made a multitude of contributions to Houston as a musician and as a teacher. He was respected and loved by the many people he touched in his professional career as well as throughout the community. His contagious smile and sense of humor endeared him to friends, colleagues, students and anyone he met. Known as a musician’s musician, whether the genre was

classical or pops, his colleagues thought he had a sense of style that was unbeatable. Al lived his life to the fullest and had many hobbies. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Shrine. Born in Chicago and educated at Lane Technical High School, Al went on to serve in the armed services during WWII. After the war, he joined the newly formed GI Symphony in Paris, France. Upon his return to Chicago, he began his

professional career playing stage shows and symphony concerts with orchestras in Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. Al traveled through life with music in his heart and a violin in his hands. He

delighted in his phrase: “Have fiddle, will travel.” He eventually became concertmaster and featured soloist with Wayne King’s big band, with whom he toured the United States. In 1950, Al became a member of the staff orchestra of the National Broadcasting Company in Chicago. He appeared on radio and television as soloist and was high on contractors lists in making commercial recordings. In 1966, Al and Kappy moved to Houston where Al became Assistant Concertmaster of the Houston Symphony Orchestra. At that time he also accepted a teaching position at Sam Houston State University, and, in addition became a member of the Lyric Art String Quartet. In 1969, he was promoted to Associate Concertmaster of the HSO and left Sam Houston to teach part-time at the University of Houston. In 1977, he resigned from the Houston Symphony and accepted a full-time faculty position at the U of H School of Music. He continued playing as concertmaster of the Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera orchestras, American Pops Orchestra, Texas Chamber Orchestra and the J.S. Bach Society. In 2004, he retired from the University of Houston Moores School of Music and continued to teach privately. Al is survived by Kappy (Pence) Muenzer, beloved wife of 46 years, his sons Lloyd (Sharon) and Dean, daughter Lisa Kneller (Jim); brother Edgar Muenzer (Nancy), sister Louise Bruyn (Severyn), half-sister Carol Ponder, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and an extended family of many friends. A memorial celebration of Al’s life was held on Saturday, Nov. 13th at The Chapel at A.D. Bruce Religion Center, University of Houston. The family welcomes memorial gifts to Citizens for Animal Protection, 11925 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079 or to Moores School of Music, University of Houston, 120 School of Music Bldg., Houston, TX 77204.
