Educating Tomorrow's Leaders: Young Men, Grades 7-12 ESOL Cadets Visit UCSD HAPPYHOLIDAYS FROM THE ACADEMICS DEPARTMENT: We recently finished our second grading period and are now almost three weeks into our third grading period. The Class of 2018 led the way again during grading period two with 76% of seniors on either the Dean’s List or Honor Roll. Awesome job seniors! When we return from break, the Cadets will have three more weeks of class to review and prepare for semester one finals (Jan 22-26). Many classes are now utilizing our brand new Chromebooks in the classroom to help expand their digital learning and knowledge. Google Classroom, Google Drive, Kahoot and a variety of other technology tools are being implemented daily in our boy-friendly classrooms and will serve as a great learning tool for both college and career preparation. Recently various groups of Cadets visited USD, SDSU, and UCSD campuses to take a tour and speak to current students as well as Academy alumni about the college experience. All ESOL classes had a wonderful opportunity to participate in an international university tour of UCSD to visit the campus and speak to admission counselors specifically for international students. This field trip was a valuable experience as the students learned about the university system in the United States and had the opportunity to speak with the ANA alumni and ask questions about their experiences at UCSD. Dr. Cowen and Mr. Segovia also took a field trip to the research labs at UCSD, where Cadets were able to speak to top research scientists and graduate students about a variety of research topics. Cadets using the new Chromebooks in the classroom SAVE THE DATE: MARCH 3, 2018 Join Army and Navy Academy for its Annual Distinguished Warrior Awards Dinner & Auction! Report back to ANA for an evening you don't want to miss. Fly on over as we introduce the new Warrior Aviation program. The Top Gun themed event will include dinner, entertainment by "The Killer Dueling Pianos," and Silent & Live Auction. All benefiting the Army and Navy Academy. Please mark your calendars for the opportunity to support ANA and enjoy a fun filled evening with parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. Click for more info! AUCTION DONATIONS NEEDED ANA is looking for your support through Auction Donation Items, Underwriting, and Sponsorship to help make our event a success. The auction is ANA’s largest annual fundraising event and we would greatly appreciate your support as an event donor. Last year, proceeds from the event enabled academic enhancements, technology upgrades, and campus renovations. By donating an auction item, you can make a profound impact on the Cadet experience while supporting the Academy’s mission. Past auction items have included timeshare and vacation home stays in tropical and international destinations, hotel and fine dining certificates, golf outings, winery tours, luxurious spa experiences, and more. Should you wish to contribute or have any questions, please contact Mary Tran – Assistant Director for Events and Parent Programs: [email protected] FALL SPORTS AWARDS We'd like to congratulate our Cadet Athletes on their hard work and dedication! Mattison’s 30-plus years of surfing competition and coaching includes winning the national surfing championship in 2003 as well as five East Coast Championships in earlier years. He later was the assistant coach for the USA Surf Team in 2009 when it won a Gold Medal in the International Surfing Association World Championships. A surfboard design specialist as well, Mattison was dubbed “Lord of the Boards” by Surfing Magazine. At the Academy, Mattison will coach the Warrior Surf Team in Scholastic Surf Series Division 5 events. The Academy’s oceanfront campus has made surfing one of the school’s most popular winter sports. “Sean’s experience as a champion competitor, coach, and surfboard designer gives our Cadet athletes special access to world-class training in this sport,” Byrd Milic (Athletic Director) said. Mattison and his family reside in Oceanside. ALUMNUS MAKES US PROUD! This November, one of our graduates from the Class of 2017, Richard Polanco, played in a tournament with his college team, Eastern Washington University, at UNLV. Some of our ANAfamily were able to travel out to see him play and spend time getting to know his coaches and his new team. Coach John Maffucci, Janet Pullen, Coach Bobby Huggins and his family, Coach Rafael Rodriguez and his wife Leslie, Sarah Ortiz, and two current Cadets, JC Canahuate and Albert Pichardo, were all able to visit and watch Richard in action. He played several games over the span of the week and was able to show success as a player. As an ANA alumnus, he has continued his love of basketball and pursues his college and career goals. We are Warrior Proud of this Alumnus! PHOTOGRAPHY All athletic teams pose for team pictures and individual pictures. Warrior teams and posed individual athletic pictures may be viewed and purchased by clicking here. WINTER BREAK We are quickly approaching the Winter Break. Please communicate your Cadet’s travel plans with his TAC officer and the transportation department if you have not already done so. We have transportation available to the Oceanside train station and the San Diego airport but we need to have travel itineraries as soon as possible. Cadets are released at 12:30pm on December 15th and are required back on campus by 8:00pm on January 2nd. There are no Health Center or Mess Hall services on campus during this time frame so no Cadets are allowed on campus prior to January 2nd. WARRIOR AVIATION COURSE AND CLUB In close coordination with Academics, we are moving forward with the planning and execution of the Warrior Aviation Course (WACC) next school year. The club is going strong with 25 members and many on the waiting list. On September 22nd, the Warrior Aviation Club attended military day at the Miramar Airshow. It was a huge hit to not only see the military equipment but interact with many of the military personnel from MCAS Miramar. We have Air and Space Museum and Camp Pendleton Air Station on our agenda for future field trips. The Academy purchased a number of small drones and after a brief tutorial by one of the more experienced WAC member, the Cadets enjoyed testing them during the recent club day. Cadets take home seven trophies at the Rookies Drill Meet ROOKIES DRILL MEET On December 2nd, the JROTC Department took several of our young men to Katella High School to a “Rookies Drill Meet.” The young men performed remarkably. They participated in the following events: Unarmed Regulation Drill, Armed Regulation Drill, Color Guard, and Individual armed and unarmed Tap- Out. They competed against 14 other schools and proudly walked away with seven trophies! They won two Unit Trophies and five Individual Trophies and placed first place in Armed Regulation drill and third in Color Guard. SWEETWATER UNION HIGH SCHOOL DRILL MEET Army and Navy Academy Drill Team participated in the annual Sweetwater Union High School Drill Meet hosted by their Marine Corps JROTC Unit on 9 December 2017. - The Color Guard Team led by Cadet Tan did well, scoring 96 of possible 105 points. - Unarmed Drill was led by Sam Cushman, a freshman. - Armed Drill was led by Ben Rohrbacher. The team is young, coachable, and noticeably dedicated to establishing a strong program. THE RAIDER TEAM Our Raider Cadets competed in a Raider Challenge this past weekend that was held at Seal Beach. There were over 25 schools that competed. Our Cadets came in 6th place in their category. The Raider Challenge consisted of the following events: Knot Tying,1 mile run, 1 mile litter carry (100 lbs.), grueling Obstacle Course (tire pull in wet sand; low crawl in wet sand; overhead ammo can walk in the ocean chest deep, 60 pound tire flip for 10 yards; and run a ½ mile) The following Cadets represented ANA: David Eshner, Jeremy Gluck, Wesley Wang, Reid Zieber, Charles McBride, Luke Meyers, and Jefferson Kibbe The Raider Challenge * Upcoming competition: The Raider Team will be competing in the AMCSUS Physical Fitness Challenge the 2nd week of December with future competitions against Fullerton and Sonora High Schools. Plans to host a Raider Meet here at ANA in 2018 is underway. The Rifle Team just had their first meeting of the year and the interest is high with over 25 Cadets in attendance. Competition will be tough, in order to choose the 6 to 9 Cadets that will actually compete. Currently competitions are scheduled with Fullerton High School, 8th Brigade Rifle Postal Match, and 7 other postal matches through April 2018. JPA (JROTC PROGRAM ASSESSMENT) Phase 1 (in-ranks inspection and the Color Guard) of the JPA was conducted on October 20th with the phase 2 (briefings and interviews) on November 6th.
