My dear Confreres,From on high, Mary follows our footsteps with gentle concern,

dispels the gloom in moments of darkness and distress, reassuresus with her motherly hand. Supported by awareness of this, let us

continue confidently on our path of Christian Commitmentwherever providence may lead us. Let us forge ahead in our lives

under Maryís guidance. ñ Pope Benedict XVI

Fraternal greetings of peace and joy of the Lord to all. The month ofAugust comes with two great occasions to celebrate. Incidentally, theyfall on the same day. The first is the solemnity of the Assumption of Maryand the second is the Independence Day of our country. The formercelebrates the Christian faith that God assumed the Blessed Virgin Maryinto Heaven with her body and soul. The feast is also known especially inthe Eastern Countries as the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God.Thus, the day reminds us that Holy Virginís body was not subjected tothe physical decay but was taken up to heaven and reunited there withher soul.

Though the belief in Maryís bodily assumption into heaven goes back toapostolic times, it was not officially recognized as dogmas till the secondhalf of the twentieth century. Since 1950, the Assumption of the BlessedVirgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life is a defined dogmaof the Catholic Church. For, it was on November 1, 1950, that Pope PiusXII, declared officially in†Munificentissimus Deus†that ìthat the†ImmaculateMother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of herearthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.î

To quote the words of Pope Benedict XVI: By contemplating Mary inheavenly glory, we understand that the earth is not the definitivehomeland for us either. And that if we live with our gaze fixed on eternalgoods we will one day share in the same glory and the earth will becomemore beautiful. Consequently, we must not lose our serenity and peaceeven amid the thousands of daily difficulties. The luminous sign of OurLady taken up into heaven shines even more brightly when sad shadowsof suffering and violence seem to loom on the horizon.î

As we also celebrate with gaiety the Independence Day of our belovedcountry India, let us with gratitude recall the great sacrifices of ourcountrymen who fought the foreign powers courageously and toiledtirelessly for the freedom and development of this great nation. With asense of pride, let us salute tricolor flag and make a pledge to contributeour share for the development of the Country and our brothers andsisters of our motherland.
