Welcome to the Spring 2015 edition of Focus. It feels as if Spring has certainly sprung at the hospice with the garden looking beautiful, growth in all parts of the Hospice, more patients being supported and lots of new ideas for volunteers! In July this year we will be celebrating a very special event - we will be 35 years old! It has been wonderful hearing from people across the hospice about past special events, patients that have been supported and the amazing changes to both the building and the Hospice at Home service.

Spring will also see us launching our new strategic plan 2015 - 2020 Postcards from the Future.

We have been working with people who use the hospice, partners and funders to understand what the hospice might look like in 2020. Some of the ideas were innovative - a hospice without walls; others ambitious - ensuring that every person across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire has access to hospice care when they need it and a clear message of ‘keep up the brilliant work’!

We have agreed 5 priorities: to reach more people; collaborate more with others; work better with communities; build on our current services and ensure the sustainability of the hospice, as we know our services will always be needed by those facing a difficult time in their lives. We will be launching our strategy on 20th May 2015 and on the same day will see the brand new, amazing website which we believe will help people understand better what we do and how they can help.

Meeting the needs of all those who call upon Nottinghamshire Hospice

for support is both a privilege and a challenge. I do hope that as you read this edition of Focus you will understand more about the impact we have on the lives of those we support and be inspired to help us, in your own way, to make a difference to more and more people across our city and county.

Our 35th birthday celebrations were off to a yummy start when Janet and Paul Hatton, Hospice staff members and volunteers, surprised us with the gift of two amazing cakes created by their talented daughter ‘Emz Baking Mad’.The cakes were enjoyed by our patients, volunteers and staff who joined the celebrations and in the words of patient, Iris Clarke ‘Here’s to another happy 35 years’!

We are delighted to announce that Sue Cooper, who has been appointed by the High Sheriff Dr Jaswant Bilkhu as his Health and Wellbeing Ambassador, has

chosen Nottinghamshire Hospice as her charity for the year, coinciding with our 35th birthday year. Sue will be working with individuals, groups and communities throughout the year to raise awareness of mindfulness and how this can improve all aspects of people’s lives.

Sue will be working with the team at Nottinghamshire Hospice, supporters and all who share our ambition to be a beacon of wellness across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Congratulations to Jas on your appointment and thank you Sue for choosing Nottinghamshire Hospice, we are looking forward to a year full of learning!

We hope that you will join us in celebrating 35 years of Nottinghamshire Hospice providing care to our local communities and consider taking part in some of our fantastic fundraising events or celebrations and help to raise awareness and increase understanding of Hospice Care.

Hospice HeadlinesHospice GardenOver the course of the last year, the hospice garden has been through a redesign to create a therapeutic area for patients, families and their carers to relax and enjoy outdoor treatments.

A number of local volunteers including corporate volunteers from Lloyds Bank Mortgage Team, Department for Work and Pensions, Specsavers and Experian have put a great deal of time and effort into helping transform the outdoor space at Nottinghamshire Hospice into a welcoming and colourful scented area, including a pond and waterfall feature, vegetable beds, sensory area and areas to attract wildlife.

With an increasing number of patients experiencing mobility issues, a decision was made to enhance the outdoor space to allow better access for wheelchairs along with a platform lift, ensuring that the garden could be enjoyed by all.

Thanks to a number of kind donations from local garden centres the garden is starting to bloom in colour and has already attracted frogs and newts to the pond.

The remodelling of the hospice garden still has some work to do, and maybe you can help with plant donations or offering your time in the garden or perhaps speaking with your employer about corporate volunteering? If so, please call us on 0115 910 1008 or email [email protected] to find out more about how you can help.

In Memoriam & Legacies Lottery

We would like to say a big thank you to Mrs Silverman who has been a supporter of Nottinghamshire Hospice lottery for 6 years. After family members had suffered from cancer she was keen to support charities which provide vital practical and emotional support to patients and their families.

In March, Mrs Silverman was ‘shocked and over the moon’ to receive a winning cheque of £500 in the draw. She was so pleased that she decided to share her good fortune and has kindly donated

£100 back to the hospice. Mrs Silverman has said that she hopes to share some of the remaining winnings with her grandson who is due to get married soon.

Our weekly lottery costs just £1 a week and you could be in with a chance of winning up to £500. You can join by completing a membership form on our website at www.nottshospice.org/lottery or calling 0115 910 1008 (option 4).

“Thank you Mrs Silverman”

Nottinghamshire Hospice needs your support today and always. Without the support of our local businesses, we simply could not provide free of charge round-the-clock, end of life care to the people of Nottinghamshire.

Here are just a few of the amazing Hospice Heroes who have contributed so much over the last few months. Sadly we don’t have room to thank everyone, but whatever your contribution to us is it is greatly appreciated. For more of our Hospice Heroes, see our online gallery at www.nottshospice.org.

Brookfield’s Garden Centre chose Nottinghamshire Hospice as their charity of the year during 2014/2015 and raised a fantastic total of £6,800.00 through various fundraising initiatives and gifts in kind including a donation of pots, pansies and compost for our patients to have a lovely time decorating pots and potting plants to take home, or for their windows...

We are delighted to report that David Lloyd Leisure at Aspley selected Nottinghamshire Hospice to be the beneficiary of some local fundraising by their Club during 2015.

Norwood Park Golf Centre has supported Nottinghamshire Hospice for many years hosting our annual golf days; last year Club Captains Lynne Ellis & Lee Molloy also selected the hospice for their fundraising year. The amount raised was £4,000 through many raffles & cake stalls at their Open Events, Christmas Grand Auction and Charity Golf Day in the Summer.

A big thank you to the corporate supporters of our ‘Girl’s Night Out, Charity Moonlight Walk and Disco’: our sponsor Foresters and our supporters Nottingham Forest Football Club, Stirland Paterson Group Ltd, Raynet Communications Service, A C Lasers, Stephen Blood Photography, Nottinghamshire Police and Dance Divaz. This fundraising event is set to be one of the most high profile

charity fundraising events on our calendar this year (May 16th), a great night out and for a great cause. There are still places available register at www.nottshospice.org/moonlightwalk.

We are delighted that the 2015 Radcliffe on Trent Golf Club captains, Gary Cooke and Jillian Gamble have chosen Nottinghamshire Hospice as their captains’ charity. Gary and Jillian have been inspired by the work done at the hospice for the care of adults in the Nottinghamshire area with life limiting illnesses. During their captaincy year they hope to raise £10,000 by having fundraising events and raffles.

Whether you work for a large corporation or a small local business, we’ll help you get the most out of your corporate partnership with us. Contact our dedicated Corporate Fundraiser on 0115 910 1008 (option 3) to find out more about how we can work together.

Father and son Tim and Rob Goliah along with friends Steve Gough, Andrew Henshaw and Tim Ives set off on their epic trail challenge across the World Heritage site on Friday 24th April and ittook them three long days to completethe gruelling trek.

Community Fundraiser, Richard Owen caught up with Tim and Steve to find out more about why they had chosen Nottinghamshire Hospice and what hospice care means to them:

“Because of the great work hospicesdo. My father used a local hospicethree days before he died. The care hereceived was fantastic and more helpis needed to support your local hospiceso that others in the same positionas my father and family have accessto the invaluable and compassionatesupport network that we had.” TimGoliah

“My mother was supported by a localhospice when she was diagnosed withcancer. Thankfully, she beat cancer butthe support she was provided with afterdiagnosis was remarkable.” Steve Gough

Thanks to our fantastic supporters likeTim, Steve and friends we can continuemake a huge difference to our patientsby providing overnight nursing care givingthem and their families a caring hand tohold when they need it most.

Events

Strictly All for a Good Cause

Our ever popular Strictly Learn to Dance made a return for the 8th time at the start of the year. Seven couples of budding dancers started on their journey of dramatic dance and fantastic fundraising in January, learning the waltz and the samba in time for the Grand Final at East Midlands Conference Centre on Saturday 21st March.

Everything was set for what promised to be a fabulous evening of glitz and glamour - compere ‘Dangerous Dave’ from Gem 106 was in position, the audience were in their seats and 14 nervously excited dancers were ready to take to the floor - and it didn’t disappoint! Each couple performed both dances to a thrilled audience, the judges gave their scores and the audience cast their votes. Our congratulations go to Arwen and Phil, a husband and wife team who won the overall competition on a nail-biting tie-break, decided on the couple with the highest number of audience votes!

Our thanks go to all our fantastic dancers, each of whom was asked to raise £350 for the hospice in return for their dance lessons. They were all good dancers but were fantastic fundraisers and between them raised over £8,700 which means we can provide in excess of 300 additional hours of nursing care throughout Nottinghamshire. Thank you to them all!

Have you been tempted?

We are now accepting applications for Strictly Learn to Dance 9, where our couples will learn the Quickstep and the Salsa under the careful guidance of our instructor Dawn of Wollaton School of Dancing. If you would like an application form or for more information please contact the Fundraising team on 0115 910 1008 (option 3) or email [email protected]

Entry is £15.00 per person or a group discount of £125 for groups of 10. The minimum age for participation is 16. Volunteers are incredibly important to Nottinghamshire Hospice, making up two thirds of our workforce. Our volunteers help us in all sorts of ways, from admin and social media tasks to direct patient support and retail. The hospice simply could not

survive without the wonderful volunteers who give up their time to support the charity. As a thank you for all the time and help, we are holding a celebration event during National Volunteers’ Week. Volunteers’ Week happens every year from 1st-7th June and is a week dedicated to recognising and celebrating the difference that volunteers make across the country.

Nottinghamshire Hospice is proud to participate in recognising our volunteers in this way as a small thank you for everything that they do for us.

Volunteers

We asked some of our volunteers what it is they enjoy about volunteering with Nottinghamshire Hospice:

Grace “I volunteer to develop new skills” Grace joined us 5 yearsago whilst studying Law atUniversity and helps processGift Aid information ontoour systems amongst other things. Grace loves thevariety the role brings andthe people that she meetsalong the way.

June “I volunteer because it brings out my creative side” June joined us 6 years ago and it wasn’t long before her creativity took over! Under the guidance of the Mapperley shop Manager June began setting up visual displays in store and loves every moment of it. “It’s great to get a chance to do the things that I like doing. Customers appreciate the displays and it gives me a buzz”

Gillian “I volunteer because I want to give something back”Gillian has been at the hospice for five years volunteering in DayTherapy. She listens to patients, chats with them and serves meals. “I enjoy being with the patients and giving them a lift, it’s really important we are here to spoil the patients too. It takes time for some patients to open up to you, but when they do it’s so rewarding.”
