OFFERING OF A HOLY HOUR My most kind Jesus, I desire during this hour to ‘watch’ with Thee, and by the love of my poor heart to console Thee for the bitter sorrow which overwhelmed Thee in the Garden of Gethsemane. I desire to forget myself and all that concerns me excepting my sins, the foresight of which caused Thee so much suffering in Thine agony, and as I was the cause of sorrow to Thee then, so now I desire to be to Thee a consolation….I offer Thee, moreover, this hour of prayer and reparation for the triumph of the Church, for the conversion of souls and nations, and for every other intention for which Thou didst pray, sweat blood, endure Thine agony, and accept Thy bitter passion and death. Angel of the agony, help me so to pass this Holy Hour that I may console the Heart of my Jesus to promote His interests throughout the world.

BELLS became popular in churches around the

sixth century A.D. It was the beginning of a new age in Europe, and church buildings began to be the central gathering place of a city or village. Since people did not have clocks or watches, bells rang out the time of day. As bells increased in size, bell towers were constructed to hold them and for their sound to reach out to the countryside. Bells are like evangelists… they ring out the good news of salvation, and call Christian people to prayer three times a day: morning, noon, and evening. Having such an honored role in church life, bells are consecrated only by a bishop in a ceremony similar to baptism, and are even given a Christian “name.” Recently the Cathedral of Paris – Notre Dame – got a whole new set of bells to replace those destroyed by the French Revolution. RING THE BELL CAMPAIGN The goal of this campaign is to reduce our debt and build

a bell tower. The bell from our old church is displayed in the

gathering space. This project will take over $300,000 and the

tower will not be raised until the first $250,000 has been met.

Fr. Bill turns 50 this weekend, and your “present” to him

would be to make a pledge to the “Ring the Bill Campaign”.

Through the grace of God, and a sacrifice on your part, we

can achieve our goal. All contributions, from the smallest to

the largest, will be greatly appreciated. Your decision is a

personal one. Please pray about how you can best support

the campaign. Pledge cards are available at the back of

church. In addition to the pledge drive we will have a box in

the gathering space each weekend for weekly “pocket

change”. This is God’s parish, and all of us are called to do

our share.

If you are relatively new to St. Mary, consider joining

your fellow parishioners with a pledge to the Ring the Bell

Campaign. New donors to St. Mary Catholic Parish Capital

Campaign will have the opportunity to have your name(s)

placed on the recognition plaque in the gathering space. May

we place our trust in God knowing all things are possible

with Him.

Dear Parishioners, As a new year is under way, it is time for us to start up the

Parish Pastoral Council once again. Our first meeting will be on Wednesday, October 16th at 7:00 p.m. I would

ask that all parish groups have an official representative there. I am also looking for any “member-at-large” volunteers who believe they can represent the broader parish needs to the council and who have the time to make a monthly third Wednesday meeting. If you believe that you feel called to this, please contact Fr. Bill through the parish office. It’s good to have the school year started again and to see our many activities under way. Have a blessed week. Fr. Bill

OUR LADY

OF THE

ROSARY

The word rosary comes from the Latin word rosarium, which means "a garden of roses," and this derivation helps explain the origins of this Marian prayer. In the 13th century nobles customarily crowned their beloved with a garland of roses. At the same time, one of the customs of chivalry was for knights to pledge their honor to the Blessed Virgin Mary. From these two customs developed the practice of "crowning" the Blessed Mother, either by placing a wreath of roses upon one of her images or by offering a spiritual "garland of roses" to her through the rosary prayer. During this period Domingo de Guzman, who became known as St. Dominic, came to southern France to preach. While he was praying in a chapel in 1208, Our Lady appeared and taught him the complete rosary prayer, urging him to preach it to the rest of the world as a remedy against heresy and sin. The apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima in the 20th century extended the devotions. On October 13, 1917, Our Lady of Fatima told the children, "I am the Lady of the Rosary. I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and to ask pardon for their sins….People must say the rosary. Let them continue to say it every day."
