Beware of These Two Amazon Scams!!
Over the last week we have had
several residents who have been
approached by scammers saying they work
for Amazon. The thieves call to say that
there has been “fraudulent activity” found on
a person’s Amazon account and then offer
to fix the charges if you give your credit card
information. If the person says no, the
thieves will then say that the person needs
to download a piece of software called
Team Viewer to protect their account. This
program disables all virus and firewall
program. By the end of the install the
scammer gets complete access to the
person’s money and banking information.
The second scam directs people to a
website that looks exactly like the Amazon
website, but it’s fake. Scam targets are
asked to re-enter personal information,
Including bank account details. If someone
ever calls you and asks you to verify
personal information, and you’re not the one
that called them, do not answer it! If you
want to see if the call is legitimate you can
ask for a number to call them back. Most
likely they will not give it to you. But if they
do, hang up and call back to confirm if the
company is who they say they are.
If you receive one of these scam calls,
contact the Social Worker in your area.
Please note, Amazon DOES NOT call their
clients when a purchase has been made. If
you ever get a suspicious email claiming to
be from Amazon, report it to the company at
[email protected]. You can also
report anything you believe may be a scam
to https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov.

Stuck At Home Together from the Un-lonely Project: As we physically isolate ourselves due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our need for social connection to get through these uncertain and challenging times is more important than ever. Based on a growing body of scientific research, we know creative activities help to reduce anxiety while promoting mean-ingful connections—even when we can’t be in the same room with each other. On this site you can watch a short film then participate in a discussion online, you can view other’s art, or create your own to share. There are also creative challenges like crafting a self-portrait from objects around your house. Their goal is to offer a wide range of opportunities for engaging in creative expression, plus sharing and connecting with others. Website: Artandhealing.org Live a Dream: This site collects video montages to brighten your day. Young people can submit a short video to share, tell a joke, play an instrument, or just give someone some encouraging words. Their mission is to serve residents to the best of their ability, to embrace older adults’ passions, and to give back to the community. They find opportunities to create experiences those residents have always dreamed of, but have never had the chance to do. Their clients have fed giraffes, ridden in airplanes, motorcycles, and posed for western photo shoots. Some have even enjoyed field-side views of their favorite football stars. They even have a program that offers virtual goggles that you can wear which takes you to destinations across the globe! https://liveadream.org Be My Eyes: Be My Eyes is a free mobile app with one main goal: to make the world more accessible for blind and low-vision people. This app connects blind and low-vision individuals with sighted volunteers and companies from all over the world through a live video call. The company recognizes that blind or low-vision people often needed a little assistance to solve everyday tasks. The technology of this app uses video calls to assist blind or low-vision individuals without them having to rely on friends and family, but instead by using a network of volunteers. https://www.bemyeyes.com/ Sweet Readers Connect: This free program connects trained students aged 11-22 with older adults in a weekly 15-30 minute virtual visits. During these visits, student ambassadors come prepared with activities to engage and bring joy to older adults including story making, music, art, movement, games & conversation. https://connect.sweetreaders.org/ Amy Keiper-Shaw, Director of Resident Life

1 Barbie & Ted Hill of Crosses
Lithuania 2019 On a cold, windy, rainy day our tour
group visited the Lithuanian Hill of
Crosses, a symbol of heroic
resistance for religious freedom by
the Lithuanians. The hill contains
crosses from the faithful of many
religions, including thousands from
Protestants and Catholics. The
Medieval fortress on the top of the
hill has been the site of numerous
demonstrations and battles fought by Lithuanians to protect and preserve their
religious freedom. Most recently, in the 1960s-70s, they successfully held off
Russians trying to destroy the hill because it was becoming a sacred place. For
many in our tour group who climbed the hill, adding their own crosses and prayers
was a moving experience.
2 Barbie & Clock-Hotel-Train-Station-Museum Ted Paris, France 2019
On our way for the 75th anniversary of D-Day, we
stayed briefly in Paris. We would have visited
the Louvre, but the line was too long. So, we
walked across the Seine River to a beautiful
Beaux-Arts building that was to be our hotel in
Paris. Built as a major train station in 1898, the
building served during WWII as a center for dis-
tributing parcels bound for prisoners. In 1956 a
hotel was added, in which Ted once stayed. In
1977, the French government converted the
building into what became a well-known
museum—le Musée d’Orsay. It specializes in
French art dating from 1848 to 1914. The train
station’s large clock, above the museum, still
runs on time. Over lunch, we viewed the Seine
through the face of the clock.

3 Barbie & Ted 18th
Century Alive
Rural Estonia 2019
During our trip to the Baltic States, we drove into the
18th Century in Estonia. Before us were acres of a
reconstructed rural village, including houses with
thatched roofs, parts of houses, barns, churches,
windmills, and many smaller buildings. Animals such
as chickens, sheep, horses, and cows were very
much in evidence. We walked through the village to
visit a particular house, where we also picked and ate
wonderful apples right off the trees in a nearby
orchard. The woman in the picture lived nearby and
came to this village to be part of the experience we
were enjoying. With ease, our imaginations fit her
right into the 18th Century scene.
4 Barbie & Ted Unintended D Day Landing
Normandy, France 2019 We were in Normandy to celebrate the 75
th
anniversary of the Allied WWII landing in 1944. We
stopped in the village of Sainte-Mère-Église, which
was in the thick of heavy fighting between Americans
and Germans. The parachute of one American
caught on the church steeple, where he hung for
several hours playing dead. He went on to receive
several medals. We mingled with a large number of
people of many ages and nationalities, many dressed
in WWII period clothing, and snapped this picture of
reenactment of the parachute incident. We met one
young American army paratrooper who had jumped
in that morning, 75 years before, his grandfather had
made the same jump under very different
circumstances.
