HAPPENINGS FROM THE CHAIRA Publication of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities
SUMMER/FALL 2014
Robert Haimsohn, Chair, Board of Trustees
Twenty-five years ago, in June 1989, The Garden Court
at Seacrest Village in Encinitas opened its doors to the
first resident. For those who may have been involved
with the Homes at that time, we called it San Diego
Hebrew Homes. Today, we are Seacrest Village Retirement Communities, and because
of the generosity of Lee and Frank Goldberg what was “The Garden Court” is now the
“Lee & Frank Goldberg Residence Court”—along with a new addition that opened a few
years ago.
Since then we have opened other buildings, sold the 54th Street Hebrew Home,
purchased a campus in Rancho Bernardo, started a management company that
manages the Jewish Home of Orange County/Long Beach and have started a Home
Care Agency. And that is the short list.
As we plan the next 25 years, I am humbled by the vision and persistence of this
community. The community recognizes the need for additional facilities for care; as
we plan for the future growth of our elderly community, we must continue to be
diligent in our research, progressive in our delivery systems, and most of all we must
be prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of us. Together, we
can make the next 70 years of this great organization as dynamic as the first.
I, and my children and grandchildren (G-d willing), will look forward to being a part of
this good work; I hope you and yours will share in that responsibility with me. f

OUR MISSIONSeacrest Village Retirement Communities provides services to seniors in a Jewish environment that promotes community, independence and innovation.
Robin P. Israel, MPAVice President Arthur & Sophie Brody Philanthropy Chair
Walking through the Encinitas campus last month I encountered a resident strolling the halls with a smile that caught my attention — I wondered what she was thinking. So I stopped and asked her.
Her reply was not what I expected. She looked at me, smiling, and said “This is my last address… but it’s ok, it’s a good one, and it’s my home.”
I wondered if she was upset, was she just reminiscing, what was going through her mind. So I asked that too. We then had a brief but sincere discussion about how content she is at Seacrest and what that meant to her. I did not want to part from her as the sentiments she was sharing were so thought-provoking — it made me want to hear more.
Recently at a Seacrest Board meeting, guest speaker Dr. Ken Druck presented the findings of work he has conducted with Seacrest residents with regard to how they feel living at Seacrest and what is most important to them, and perhaps what troubles them.
I sat paying close attention and was intrigued to find that some of the same things that the residents feel living at Seacrest are the same things I felt living in a college dormitory or even at Jewish summer camp. They feel safe, they feel comforted in knowing someone is always there, they feel like they have a family (made of friends) and they feel protected by the staff. And they share things in common. These were just a few things he shared. He also discussed some of the same challenges I too felt living in a dormitory or summer camp such as how we learn to live with a group of new people, navigate different personalities and learn to live in an environment that is unfamiliar and different than we are used to.
It all brought me back to my walk through the campus days earlier when I encountered the resident with the intriguing smile. “This is my last address… but it’s ok, it’s a good one…”
After hearing Dr. Druck, I had a greater understanding of what she meant. Seacrest is her home and because of all of the friends, support, love and companionship that she has, she is ok. It might be her last address… but when all is considered… it’s a good one. f
When I was a little girl, my grandmother always said, “Everything always works out. “ I used to wonder how she could be so confident that it would. Today I’m quite certain it was because of her incredible optimism.
My grandmother lived until 102 and I was blessed to see her live out her final days at Seacrest, upbeat and able to take on adversity. I see that same determination to savor life in so many of our Seacrest residents.
These wise elders are a special population of optimists because they often have encountered more hardships through the years than younger people.
Dr. Martin E. P. Seligman, author of Learned Optimism, believes that optimism enhances one’s quality of life and that being optimistic “can break up depression, boost your immune system, better develop your potential and make you happier.”
My grandmother moved to Seacrest when she was 95. She did this after becoming a widow at 70, relocating to Florida from the Midwest, and starting a whole new life for herself. I call this Chapter Two.
As the years went by and after outliving most of her friends, she made the conscience decision to move closer to family in San Diego. In fact, she moved right to Seacrest, sight unseen! This would be Chapter Three.
Before her decision to move here was finalized, we feared a real deal breaker might be in store, given Seacrest didn’t have bathtubs and she had taken baths her whole life. After she pondered the situation for only a minute, she decided she would just have to learn to take showers, and that’s exactly what she did.
My grandmother’s story demonstrates the same positive spirit and resilience of the typical Seacrest resident. They made the decision to move to Seacrest too, and they didn’t just move. They made and continue to make the best of what Seacrest has to offer. These are the residents who find there are too many activities to choose from, the ones who volunteer in the greater community or right at Seacrest. Yet each one has gone through any number of challenging situations but still show us daily how to savor life with that irresistible upbeat optimism.
My dear residents …
I am grateful for the opportunity to work with you because you are incredible. You probably don’t even realize how inspiring you are to others. I want to thank you for teaching the rest of us how to defeat adversity with grace. My grandmother is my touchstone and you are as well because when I see your smiles, I know my grandmother was right — “everything always works out.”
With great appreciation. f

GENEROUS. KIND. ADVISORS. PHILANTHROPISTS. UNIQUE. SPECIAL.What words can we use to describe this beautiful couple whose vision and support guided and ultimately shaped the direction of San Diego Hebrew Homes? To say that they had an impact on Jewish eldercare is an understatement. To say that their giving both financially and as advisors will shape countless lives for many generations is also an understatement. To say that San Diego Hebrew Homes and Seacrest Foundation are the organizations they are today because of them — this is true.
Miriam and Jerome Katzin were mentors and friends to the staff. They were also great advisors and ambassadors to the organization. If they saw something they loved, they told us. If they wanted something changed, this too they told us. We are forever grateful.
We sat at the memorial and were taken by the beautiful words spoken by so many about Jerry and Miriam. When Marjory Kaplan, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Jewish Community Foundation San Diego and Miriam and Jerome Katzin, Presidential Chair spoke, it was as if everyone in the room knew exactly what she was saying and agreed. Marjory spoke of Jerry’s leadership, stating: “For those of us who can remember EF Hutton, Jerry always reminded us of their famous commercial. When Jerry talked, people listened. You could see people stop talking, even stop texting and lean forward to hear what Jerry had to say. He would come up with simple, elegant solutions to problems we were all struggling with.”
Marjory went on to speak of their Philanthropy. She said, “Jerry was quick to remind everyone about Miriam’s role.” She went on to say, “I found some remarks that Jerry made and I’m pleased to read to you his own words about Miriam.” From Jerry — “Miriam has concurred or consented to every gift our family has made. Not a penny leaves the house without her agreement. Some of you may know that the Alzheimer’s Residence at Seacrest was wholly her idea.”
We were very proud listening to Marjory’s words, knowing how dedicated they both were, especially Miriam, about The Katzin Residence and its mission. And today, because of a recent gift to the Seacrest Foundation, there is a fund set up to help provide for those who cannot afford to pay for their care.
Both the Homes and the Seacrest Foundation had the honor of meeting their philanthropic desires but more importantly, when they needed us the most, we had the honor of helping them. There could have been no greater gift for us than to give back in some way to this beautiful couple who has taught us so much. Many have been touched by their generosity; we are honored to have been a part of their lives.
Our hearts go out to their children, David, Dan and Diane; and grandchildren, Erica and Katrina.
We will miss them very much. f

A MESSAGE
from the RabbiRabbi Patti HaskellAs we contemplate Rosh Hashana, the start of the New Year in Jewish tradition, there are many emotions that arise in memory. The story of the Akidah, the binding of Isaac, is a text that we address on this Holy Day. Certainly the idea of a father, Abraham, doing God’s bidding by binding his cherished son on an altar and raising a knife above him is one that brings up myriad reactions for anyone who has heard this tale before.
Imagine Isaac and what might have gone through his head as he lay there watching his father’s knife-wielding hand. Imagine what the rest of his life might have been like after being saved by the voice of an angel telling Abraham that God wanted him to stop and put down that knife. What trauma!
There are residents at Seacrest who have undergone unimaginable ordeals and suffering. There are others who have experienced struggles in life that are merely the cost
one pays for being born into our human world. Some are now (in the word of one resident’s son) “engaged” with illness or trauma of their own or of a family member.
Each of them approaches life in a unique manner. Each is shaped by the experiences that living brings
as well as by their genetics and by who they were born to be. Isaac became a quiet man, a private man. Perhaps he would have
been so without such early trauma, or perhaps what he experienced influenced his introverted (in our modern words!) personality.
Had Isaac lived at Seacrest, I would have looked into his eyes as I asked him questions about who he was, what his hopes and fears were, what he accomplished in his lifetime, what he was proud of, what he cherished, what made him sad. With Isaac, I never had that honor. With our real life Seacrest residents, I do have the privilege of sitting and looking into their eyes as we address these life questions. Some answers come easily, some with hesitation. Some eyes look back into mine, some dart uneasily away.
Rosh Hashana: time of memories, time of feelings. Life is filled to overflowing with experiences that shape our residents just as Isaac was shaped by his Akidah experience. For the joy of seeing this in each resident I meet, I am so very grateful. f
As Women’s Auxiliary President, Mary Epsten recently told staff of San Diego Hebrew Homes, “Sigrid Fischer was the Mother of the Ball.” Thirty-seven years ago Sigrid, together with Dotty Garfield, chaired the first Women’s Auxiliary Ball. Since then the gala has become a tradition that the community looks forward to each year.
Sigrid loved making homemade desserts such as chocolate-dipped apricots that are still remembered by family, friends and Gala guests today. She had a passion and vision for décor and the women on her committee would spend months working on a set that she designed! Sigrid had a flare for elegance sprinkled with a good time that was always had by all. We will miss her loving ways and inspirational spirit.
At 93, Sigrid was a beloved member of the San Diego Jewish Community. Her dedication and commitment to the future of Jewish San Diego touched many organizations including Seacrest Village Retirement Communities, the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family Services, Congregation Beth Israel and the United Jewish Federation. Sigrid’s beautiful daughter, Sylvia, is the President of the Seacrest Foundation which made Sigrid very proud.
It is no surprise that Jack and Sigrid were the first Mayor and Mayoress of the city of Lusaka, the capital city of Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia. They were as proud of this as we were proud to have them involved with the Homes. She was our Women’s Auxiliary Mayoress. Sigrid may have entertained Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother of England, but we are proud to say that we entertained with Sigrid Fischer.
Jack and Sigrid's philanthropic lifestyle touched the community in many ways. They gave of their time and their resources. They were philanthropists in every sense of the word. Sigrid is survived by her children Diane Hickman, Sylvia and David Geffen, Susan and Jim Morris and her six loving grandchildren Brian, Michelle, Sam, Tommy, Nikki and Jodi. A new bus at Seacrest Village today is called “Sigrid’s Shuttle.” The original bus was donated to the Homes from her grandchildren in her honor for the 25th anniversary of the Women’s Auxiliary Ball. We will miss her and we promise to make her proud of our work. f

Magical, fantastic, elegant – all some of the ways in which to describe the ambiance for this year’s 211 Club Patron Recognition Party, held on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at the residence of Lee & Frank Goldberg. The entire Seacrest Village family is truly grateful for the Goldbergs' warmth and hospitality, as they welcomed over 130 of our most generous supporters into their home, proudly named “Rancho Encantado,” or Magical Ranch.
Our honored guests celebrated their commitment to the charitable mission of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities, as they enjoyed an evening connecting with longtime friends and new acquaintances. The evening’s fare was finely crafted by Pamplemousse Grille’s Executive Chef and Owner, Jeffrey Strauss.
Members of The 211 Club – an arm of the Milton D. and Madeline L. Goldberg Resident Assistance Fund – are a prestigious group of community leaders who are the cornerstone of a tremendous fundraising
effort. Their individual contributions of $1,000 or more annually help to ensure the greatest possible quality
of life for our residents. This annual appreciation party recognized our July 2013 – June 2014 supporters, as a way to express our gratitude for the care and services that are made possible through their generosity.
For more information or if you would like to become a member of The 211 Club, please contact the Office of Philanthropy at 760.632.0081 or e-mail [email protected].

211 CLUB MEMBERS
Residents give back, too!Stitches of Love: Seacrest KnittersSeacrest Knitters, a relatively new group formed earlier this year, consists of dedicated residents who knit for a cause! This altruistic club has been knitting and crocheting beautiful hats and scarves for various charities associated with the San Diego North Coast Knitters Guild, some of which include:
Operation Gratitude: A non-profit that sends care packages worldwide to our men and women in the U.S. military. The hats and scarves help to offer a sense of familiarity and a little piece of home.
Tête-a-Tête Hats: An organization that delivers donated hats to children and adults undergoing chemotherapy in various cancer treatment centers across San Diego, such as the Rady Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Scripps Health, and several
other independent medical centers.
OZ Shelter of North County: An affiliation of the YMCA San Diego, North Coast, that helps to provide shelter to youth who have fled abusive homes. The hats and scarves not only
give warmth and comfort, but also help to serve as a reminder that there are people in the community who care.
We are very proud of the Seacrest Knitters for their charitable contributions, and it is wonderful to see that an enjoyable activity can have such a positive impact on others! Keep up the great work! f
