Fall/Winter 2015

Rome wasn’t built in a day, but this tower was... Imperial Power Services recently completed a project in a 765kV switchyard.

Teaming up with our customer, we were able to generate a cohesive and repeatable plan to erect (6) Tubular A-Frame Structures in the expanding switchyard.

The project was completed safely, and ahead of schedule. The overall efficiency of the project was a by-product of the commitment, by both contractors, to developing, implementing, and executing a safe, workable plan for the crafts in the field.

Our new Liebherr LR1300 SX crane has arrived in the Lone Star State of Texas and began

its footprint at the Foster Wheeler site.

Using GPR to enhance safety on the job site

Engineers perform a GPR survey.

Imperial Crane is proud to announce that our Experience Modification Rate (EMR) has reached a low of 0.62. We are pleased to obtain this low rating in such a high risk business. An EMR is an informative and important number to any construction company. It is informative because it represents the results of a company’s safety policy and a high or low EMR can affect opportunities for potential work. Contractors recognize the benefits of a low EMR and use it to prequalify companies before accepting bids. Our low EMR has enabled us to continue building relationships with customers nationwide. Each day over 200 employees are making it home safely. This can be directly attributed to our employees’ participation in our safety programs and an effective and proactive safety staff.

As an increasing number of permit departmentsadopt new construction requirements mandating the use of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) technology, Imperial Crane Services Inc. is proud to be among the first crane companies to incorporate the new technology. GPR surveys can scan a construction site’s subsurface without actually breaking ground, Imperial Crane can now advise its clients of previously unforeseeable dangers or obstacles.

“GPR is a nondestructive testing technology that allows us to locate any underground abnormalities, such as vaults or utilities in the ground,” said Matt Meiers, lead engineer at Imperial Crane Services. “We utilize 3-D modeling of an on-site survey to assist in the setup of a crane, mitigating risk and unsafe conditions.”

In one particular instance, Meiers said the GPR service was able to save a client both time and

money by discovering underground storage tanks below its prospective construction site.

“We were working with a cellular client, and they had concerns on the ground conditions beneath their cellular components,” he said.“We performed the GPR scan and located the underground storage tanks immediately. The support foundations would have been 6 feet from the top of the underground tanks. This was a clear case of a potential failure that was avoided thanks to this technology.”

Imperial Crane employs this technology as a value-added service to its customer base. With this new service, the company looks forward to maintaining its reputation as an innovator in the crane industry.

Utilizing 3D Lift Plans to maximize job safetyImperial Crane supplied a 70 and 120 ton crane to hoist tanks weighing under 40,000 lbs. for a steel company. The company we were working with typically erects the steel, but they were able to secure the entire job with the aid of our lift plans.

3D Lift Plan technology gives our sales team and clients an accurate visualization of lifts; including ground clearances and safety margins.

Tandem hoist at the Robbins Community Power CenterThis 165,000 lb. Cyclone Unit was used in the Robbins Community Power Center for generating electricity from garbage waste. The two Cyclones were used to generate 56 megawatts of power while reducing the footprint of landfills. The Units were transported down to Mexico City where the plant is being reconstructed using the major components from the Robbins Plant. Imperial Crane utilized our 165 & 500 ton cranes in a tandem hoist due to the tight site conditions. Imperial Crane was hired by Jim Griffith of AIS (Advantage Industrial Systems Group).

Imperial Crane donated a 40 ton crane to assemble component parts for the replica of the train that carried President Abraham Lincoln’s body to Illinois following his assassination in 1865. The Lincoln Funeral Train was on exhibit for four days in October at the Indian Welcome Center in Hammond, Indiana. A replica Civil War period steam engine and tender was also part of the exhibit.

Nearly 8,000 people visited this replica on display at the Welcome Center. The replica was built by Dave Kloke of Elgin, Illinois. This replica train car has been attracting visitors along various stops throughout the country.

All Aboard!

Bohne Foundation Golf Outing

Over 125 years of service between these former and current employees…Pat Redden, Ronnie Selby Sr., Robert Kaleta and John Tierney.

The 3rd annual Bohne Foundation golf outing was held on Friday, September 25, 2015 at Oak Brook Hills Golf Club in Oak Brook, IL. Once again this year’s golf outing sold out with a total of 34 four-somes. All proceeds from this event contributed to the mission of the Bohne Foundation which is dedicated to comforting the destitute, encouraging the hopeless and aiding the neediest members of our global community.

It was a wonderful day, perfect weather and an enthusiastic group of golfers. With the support of sponsors, donors, family and friends, we raised over $95,000.

We doubled last year’s numbers and wouldn’t have done so without our contributors. During the awards ceremony, BJ Bohne presented a check for $10,000 dollars to Tim McCormick of SOS Children’s Villages Illinois to providing a safe, healing place for children whose world has been shattered by abuse, neglect, or abandonment. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Walter Payton Equipment, LLC, The Antipov Family, Sonus Consulting Group, Guzy Financial Services, Inc., Porter Pipe & Supply Co., and the Lutes Family who were premier sponsors at the Bohne Foundation golf outing.
