February is Black History Month...
and is celebrated nationwide to honor the history and contributions of African Americans. The theme for Black History Month in 2015 is "A Century of Black Life, History and Culture", chronicling the important contributions by African-Americans to art, literature, sports and pop culture. The month also highlights the importance of the civil rights movement in our country. Wilmington Senior Center will host a trip to an exhibit of African American art in Philadelphia to help celebrate Black History Month – see page 3.

Current WSC members are placed first on the Center’s 16 passenger bus for day trips. Non-members may attend a day trip if there are unpaid seats after the trip’s deadline.

YOU SPOKE…WE LISTENED! You told us in our annual survey that you wanted more and different trips,
so we’re starting with two new outings in February.
TINSELTOWN TUESDAYS!
CULTURE IN THE BIG CITY!
Represent: 200 Years of African American Art Explore the creative achievements of African American artists and
examine the expression of personal and collective identities in a nation marked by a history of racial inequality.
Represent: 200 Years of African American Art highlights selections from the
Museum’s exceptional holdings of African American art. With work by renowned artists, the exhibition showcases a range of subjects, styles, mediums, and traditions. From compelling stories to innovative methods, Represent explores the evolving ways in which African American artists have expressed personal, political, and racial identity. It begins with rare examples of fine and decorative arts made in the 1800s by free and enslaved individuals. As access to artistic training and opportunities increased, the relationship between creative expression and identity grew more complex and nuanced. In the early twentieth century, artists…embraced modernism by representing personal experiences or scenes of daily life in vibrant colors and dynamic compositions.
NOTE: This trip will require the ability to walk through long gallery corridors.
Beginning in February, we’ll go to the movies at the Regal Brandywine Town Center 16
on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, leaving at 11:00 a.m. for noontime features.
Cost is $6.00 ($5 for movie & $1 for transportation). Food is on your own.
The first trip is scheduled for Tuesday, February 10th.
Join Trip Host Sue Getman for a visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art on
Sunday, February 22nd! 11:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Cost is $5.00.

EXPERT WISDOM
Be A People Person
“The best predictor of longevity is, surprisingly, your social ties. Every day, reach out to someone, whether it’s calling your neighbor or saying hello to your coffee barista. Research has found that people who chat with a friend or a stranger report being happier.”

Black people have always been America’s wilderness in search of a promised land. --Cornel West, Race Matters Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed. --Booker T. ACTIVITIES N G L E
WSC: Experts at Living Well Gretchen Broadwater, Activities Coordinator (651-3424)
ACTIVITIES & PRESENTATIONS 2, 9, 23 AARP Tax Assistance. Clients must sign up in advance and bring ID, a copy of their 2013 tax returns and all 2014
paper work (W-2, Social Security card or official Delaware ID, dividend & interest statements, etc.) This year all tax preparers will be asking for proof of health insurance. Non-seniors will need to show their health insurance card or the letter sent to those purchasing new health insurance through the Healthcare Marketplace.
4 “Mindful Eating” Presentation, 10:30 with Fran Taccone, from City Fare. This is a program helping us to be more aware of our eating habits, the sensations you experience when you eat, and the thoughts and emotions that you have about food. It’s more about how you eat than what you eat.
13 Tai Chi Class, 10:00. Presented by Cancer Support Community.
16 Presidents’ Day - WSC Closed 19 Chopsticks Use, 10:30. Today begins the Chinese New

the Movies, 11:00. Starting in February we’ll go monthly to the Regal Brandywine Town Center Theater for a movie that starts around noon (film and time will be chosen when schedule is available each month). Cost is $5.00 for the movie and $1.00 for the bus. Food on your own.
22 Sunday Trip to Philadelphia

With the New Year here, consider setting goals to promote health and wealth! They say health is the first wealth and staying healthy can help avoid additional costs. Medicare and other insurances take care of most, but, not all healthcare costs. Vision, hearing, and dental work are often left for you to cover out of pocket. Addressing those costs early can help avoid other expensive conditions. One resource that can help you stay on top of vision, hearing, and dental needs is Nemours Senior Care. This program offers a wide range of services including full and partial dentures, hearing aids, phone amplifiers, eye exams, glasses, glasses repair, and more for low or no-cost for low income Delawareans 65 years of age and older. The maximum annual income to be eligible for their services is:
Single = $19,100 Married = $29,400 (regardless of spousal eligibility)
If you meet these requirements (are 65 or older, live in Delaware, and have income of less than the amounts above), call today to schedule an appointment to address your hearing, vision, or dental needs. For more resources for these or other needs, call a financial coach at 302-651-3427. A coach can help you find options to address your health needs while on a budget.

CAREGIVER’S CORNER
LONG DISTANCE CAREGIVING (National Institute on Aging)
Second of two parts (continued from last month)
Anyone, anywhere, can be a long-distance caregiver, no matter your gender, income, age, social status, or employment. If you are living an hour or more away from a person who needs your help, you’re probably a long-distance caregiver. The article below is a continuation of the January 2015 “Caregivers Corner” published in Happenings. How can I be most helpful when I visit the care recipient? Talk to the care recipient ahead of time and find out what he or she would like to do during your visit. Also check with the primary caregiver, if appropriate, to learn what he or she needs, such as handling some caregiving responsibilities while you are in town. This may help you set clear-cut and realistic goals for the visit. Decide on the priorities and leave other tasks to another visit. Remember to actually spend time visiting with your family member. Try to make time to do things unrelated to being a caregiver, like watching a movie, playing a game, or taking a drive. Finding time to do something simple and relaxing can help everyone—it can be fun and build family memories. And, try to let outside distractions wait until you are home again. How can I stay connected from far away? Try to find people who live near your loved one and can provide a realistic view of what is going on. This may be your other parent. A social worker may be able to provide updates and help with making decisions. Many families schedule conference calls with doctors, the assisted living facility team, or nursing home staff so several relatives can be in one conversation and get the same up-to-date information about health and progress. Don’t underestimate the value of a phone and email contact list. It is a simple way to keep everyone updated on your parents’ needs. You may also want to give the person you care for a cell phone (and make sure he or she knows how to use it). Or, if your family member lives in a nursing home, consider having a private phone line installed in his or her room. Program telephone numbers of doctors, friends, family members, and yourself into the phone, and perhaps provide a list of the speed-dial numbers to keep with the phone. Such simple strategies can be a lifeline. But try to be prepared should you find yourself inundated with calls from your parent. Where can I find local resources for my family member? Searching online is a good way to start collecting resources. Here are a few potentially helpful places to look: Eldercare Locator, 1-800-677-1116 (toll-free) National Institute on Aging website (http://www.nia.nih.gov/) Family Care Navigator Government website for state in which your loved one lives
