1. Overview and Background

Overview and BackgroundA System on Chip (SoC) is an integrated circuit that integrates all of the components of a system on to a singlesemiconductor. In the past, computing systems for data processing comprised a box form factor, such as a desktop PC.Custom development of integrated circuits allowed the creation of entire computing systems on a single small board. NowSoCs are commonplace in a wide range of applications. Key advantages of SoC systems include compact size and low powerconsumption.

Recently, it has become common to use SoC-based cameras in the video surveillance field, as network surveillance camerabecome commonplace and feature-rich. To design a complete, custom SoC camera requires very high-level processor design, qualification technology and resources to develop a SoC. Due to this reason, many of video surveillance manufactures useSoCs for image processing from general purpose semiconductor companies, as opposed to developing their own in-house..

Cameras that are developed by using general purpose, existing, or OEM SoCs will not benefit from feature sets being tightlyintegrated into the design of the product. This can lead to larger cameras requiring more power consumption, and limits offunctionality, such as being able to run multiple analytics or image adjustment techniques at the same time. This also allowsfeatures to natively run on the camera, without the need for additional licensing. Hanwha Techwin has also developed anOpen Platform framework, allows additional apps, which have been thoroughly tested, to run on the camera to add evenmore functionality and expertise from 3rd parties..

Hanwha Techwin has been developing their own SoC, based on Image Signal Processor (ISP) design know-how andtechnology. Their first SoC was the Wisenet S which was developed in 2011 for entry network camera. Hanwha Techwin'slatest network camera, the Wisenet X series uses the Wisenet 5 SoC developed in 2016.

2. Hanwha Techwin's SoC Dev. History

Hanwha Techwin's SoC Dev. HistoryHanwha Techwin developed their own ISP - W3 in 2004 and W5, A1, SV5 ISP in 2009 for analog camera, which was themainstream of the video surveillance market in those days. In 2010, the Wisenet 1 and Wisenet 2 network camera ISP wasdeveloped as the network video surveillance market grew.

Wisenet S was the first SoC that Hanwha Techwin developed in 2011 for the entry line-up. The second SoC is the Wisenet3, which supports improved resolution, H.264 codec, built-in defog function, and various video analytics.

The latest SoC, Wisenet 5 was developed in 2016 based on know-how and experience accumulated since HanwhaTechwin started in the video surveillance business in 1991. Wisenet 5 supports intelligent analytics, the bandwidthreduction technology WiseStream II, H.265 codec and many other feature-sets.
