Garden pleasures and history in the Great Garden

    now with palace and museum

The city of Hannover owes this jewel of baroque garden architecture to an extraordinary woman:

Electress Sophia of the Palatinate. Inspired by the Sun King, Louis XIV, she had the Great Garden laid out

in the French style at the end of the 1 7th century; and it became her lifes work. Today, about

half a million visitors a year enjoy the unique atmosphere of one of the best preserved baroque ga rdens in

Europe. From 2013 the Great Garden offers another top attraction: the new Herrenhausen Palace Museum

an amenity of the state capital Hannover, sponsored by the state of Niedersachsen opens at the start

of the 2013 summer season: Palaces and gardens in Herrenhausen from barock to the modern day is

the name of the big exhibition that invites visitors to entertainingly explore the many facets of the wide-

ranging palace and garden world in Herrenhausen.

    Unorgettable experiences

Obviously, these atmospheric surroundings form the perfect setting for

magnificent cultural events. The Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen are

famous for their manifold event programme, including the International

Firework Competition and the new festival KunstFestSpiele as well

as many top quality concerts, theatrical productions and ballet pe rfor-

    mances. Come and be enchanted!

The re birth o the histor ic Grotto

Originally adorned with seashells, crystal, glass and minerals, the Grotto, built in 1767, was an enchanting-

place to withdraw to, offering pleasant coolness in hot weather.

The interior decorations were removed in the 18th century, and the building turned into a store room.

Now, the artist Niki de Saint Phalle has transformed the Grotto into a magical w ork of art full of joie de vivre

and sensuality. It was to be her last great project she died in May 2002, a year before its completion.

Each of the rooms, lovingly and elaborately decorated with pebbles and fragments of glass and mirror,

overwhelms visitors with their interplay of colour, light and shade. The Grotto is simply a must on every

    visit to the Great Garden.

    SEA LIFE Hannover

IImmerse yourself in a sea of colours

and enter a magical kingdom: SEA LIFE Hannover, the first tropical SEA LIFE aquarium in Germany, will take yo u

on a fascinating, breathtaking journey - from the banks of the River Leine across the Caribbean Sea into the Amazon

rainforest. Discover an underwater kingdom alive with shimmering colours the world of tortoises, sea horses,

    sharks, rays & others!

The Aquarium has 30 tanks populated by more than 4,500 different living creatures representing more than 160

species stingrays, piranhas, black tip reef sharks, tortoises to name just a few denizens o f this remarkable

world. The main attraction at the SEA LIFE aquarium is a 300,000 litre deep-sea pool featuring an eight metre long

underwater glass tunnel. Visitors walking through the submarine tunnel are gree ted by majestic views into and

through the water: be amazed by fantastic sea creatures just a few inches away.

    Berggarten

The former mulberry plantation which served as food for silkworms has developed over the course of 300 years into a

botanical display garden with more than 1 2.000 species of plants. Unlike the Great G arden where geometry rules, the

specimens in the botanical garden grow in their natural form. More than 800 species of orchid, tropical rarities and

manifold kinds of cactuses and succulents can be discovered all-year-round in the display houses.

    Georgengarten

It was the Royal Inspector of Gardens Christian Schaumburg who shaped the terrain and used water, lawns, trees

and shrubs to create an idealised park landscape in the English style the idyllic Georgengarten. Since 1727, it has

been traversed by the 1,800-metre-long Herrenhausen Avenue, made up of four rows of lime trees.

You will a lso find the Wilhe lm Busch - Germa n Museu m of Car icature and Dra wings in the Geo rgenga rten.

Distinguished and diverse, Hannovers landscape of museums and art galleries enjoys an outstanding reputation.

The Sprengel Museum Hannover is among the most important addresses in the world for the art of the 20th and

the 21st centuries; the kestnergesellschaft, the Kunstverein (Arts Association) and the Ahlers Pro Arte/Kestner

Pro Arte Foundation are further institutions for contemporary art with reputations extending well beyond the region.

Visitors to the Lower Saxony State Museum (Landesmuseum) in Hannover will find Departments of Prehistory,

Natural History and Ethnology, the State Art Gallery, the coin cabinet of the state of Lower Saxony and an aquari-

um. The Museum August Kestner presents the ancient world and ancient Egypt, while the history of the state and

the city is recounted in the Museum of History. Wilhelm Busch German Museum for Caricature and Drawings

    Enjoy a green paradise

The most northerly ridge of Germanys central mountain range lies around 30 kilometres southwest of the state

capital Hannover: the Deister. Birdsong, rustling leaves, delightful hiking tracks: nature and culture abound here in

and around the largely beech-covered slopes of the Deister reaching up to 405 metres above sea level. The hillside

paths offer many glimpses of the Calenberger Land stretching out into the distance below, and the many ridges of

the Weserbergland. And picturesque clearings provide romantic settings for a picnic or enjoy a refreshing stop

at one of the many rustic restaurants. The path is also the goal here as enjoyed throughout the year by hikers,

    walkers and cyclists.

Attra ctions or the whol e amil y

Walkers with picnic baskets feel just as much at home here as cyclists for instance, along the Deisterkreisel route

that circles the Deister hills. Each section of the 10 0 kilometre long circular path can be enjoyed individually, and

boast many attractions in their own right: stately homes, beautiful village churches and half-timbered houses stand

witness to the centuries-old history. Imposing parks, interesting museums, numerous water mills and old w ind

mills, as well as the opulent Weser Renaissance architecture, form highlights for the who le family. Barsinghausen

and Wennigsen are culturally and historically famous for their notable monasteries. And the area is also do tted with

fascinating reminders of the busy coal mining that used to take place here.
