RS: Did you have any musical ex-periences or lessons in your youth that, at the time, you didn’t think were relevant to your goals, but later you realized that you had gained something important from that lesson or experience? HW:WhenIwasyoungerIusedtogetreallyannoyedwhenpractic-ingtoaclicktrack.Ithoughtitwasboringandpointless.Now,I’msothankfulIdidit!Beingabletoplaytoaclickisveryimportantifyouwanttobeaworkingmusician.Somuchrecordedmusicthesedaysisrecordedtoclicktracks.Ifyoucan’tplaytothat,youcouldlosethegig. However,Imustsaythatbeingabletoplaywithouttheclicktrackisequallyasimportant.Groovingisthemostimportantaspectofadrummer’srole.Ifyoucan’tkeepsteadytimeandmakethegroovefeelgood,thentherestofthemu-sicisgoingtosuffer.Establishing

Inadditiontodrumming,I’malsoasinger.Icannotevenbegintoexplainhowlearningtoplaymalletpercussiondevelopedmyearasavocalist.IamsobeyondthankfultohavehadtheeducationandeartrainingthatIdidatsuchanearlyage,allthankstoDianeDownsandtheLouisvilleLeop-ards!

HW: IwishIhadfocusedalittlebitmoreonmy“pocket.”WhenIwasgrowingup,IalwaysheardthatIhadgreattimeandmeter,butIneverheardtheword“pocket.”Itwasn’tuntilIstartedworkingwithPrincethatIreallygraspedandunderstoodthemeaningofpocketandbeingfunky.Eventhoughit’ssomethingthatIlearnedwithinthelastcoupleofyears,Iwouldn’tchangeathingabouttheprocessbecauseIcanconfidentlysaythatInowhavethebestteacheroffunkthereis! RS: When you were in elementary school, you were a member of the Louisville Leopard Percussionists, so besides playing drums, you also

Itisextremelyimportanttotrainyourearmusically—espe-ciallyforadrummer.Mostpeopledon’texpectadrummertobeaswell-trainedmusicallyastheothermusicianssimplybecausewedon’tusethemajorityofthetheorytheydo.Learningtheoryandtrainingmyearhashelpedsomuchinthewritingprocess,inlearningnewmusic,eveninsimplycommunicatingwithothermusi-ciansinrehearsalsandshows.Justbecauseyouplaythedrumsandyoudon’tplaya“melodic”instru-mentisnotanexcusetowriteofflearningthetheorybehindthemusic.Learn it!Itwillonlyhelpyoudowntheroad! RS: How important has music reading been in your career? HW:Inallhonesty,readingmusichasn’tbeenanecessityinmostofmycareeruptothispoint.IplayedinanOff-BroadwaymusicalentitledWhite NoisewhereIhadtoreadcharts,andI’msothank-fulthatIcould!Ithinkthatit’simportanttobeabletoreadmu-sicbecauseitonlyexpandsyourknowledgeandcapabilities,butIwouldn’tsayitwillmakeorbreakyourcareer. RS: You have studied and played several styles of music. How do they inform each other?
HW:Theyallgohandinhand.Eventhougheachstylehasitsownparticularfeelorgroove,theyallrequiremusicalityanddynam-ics.Therearealsodifferenttech-niquesthatareusedinorderto
makeeachstylesoundauthentic.IhaverealizedthatIoftentendtoapplythedifferenttechniquestodifferentstyles.Forexample,whenplayingjazz,youtypicallyhavelighterhandsthanwhenyou’replayingheavybackbeatrock.ButwhenIplayrock,therearetimeswhenIwillswitchtoalighterapproachforadifferentsoundandfeel.Italsohelpspre-serveenergyforlongshows!It’ssomuchfuntotryoutdifferentapproachesandtechniquesbe-tweengenres!It’sevenmorefuntolistenbacktotheshowsandrecordingsandhearhowitcomesacrossinthemusic RS: What can you tell us about up-coming tours and/or CD releases? HW:RightnowIcan’tgiveanyspecificsonanalbumreleaseortourdates.ButIcansaythat2014isgoingtobeaverybusyandexcitingyearofmusic,andwecannotwaittoshareallofthein-crediblemusicwe’vecreatedoverthelastyearandahalf!Thesearesuperexcitingtimes!Iknowfanshavebeenwaitingawhilefornewmaterial;allIcansayis,greatthingscometothosewhowait!RS

heldJanuary8–11attheHyattRe-gencyHotelinDallas,Texas.Jazzeducators,students,professionalmusicians,andenthusiastsfromaroundtheworldgatheredtoheardozensofconcertsthroughoutthedayandintotheweehoursofthemorning.Thirty-fourprofessionalensemblesperformedinaddi-tionto38studentorcommunitygroups. Someoftheheadliningpro-fessionalensemblesincludedtheFredHamiltonTrio(withEdSophondrums),theBradLealiJazzOrchestra,theLatin-Grammy-nominatedJovinoSantosNetoandhisensembleQuinteto,andtheJimWidnerBigBand(with

three-dozenensemblestoDallas.Morethan800elementary,middleschool,juniorhigh,highschool,community,andcollegemusiciansperformedaspartofthefestival.Eachensembleplayeda30-min-uteconcert,followedbya30-min-utecritiquefromtwomentoringartists,includingsomeofthebiggestnamesinjazz.MorethanadozenensembleswerefromTexas—includingtheCedarHillHighSchoolLonghornSteelBand,DallasJazzHarpEnsemble,DentonHighSchoolLabBand,NorthCen-tralTexasCollegeJazzOrchestra,andTexasCityHighSchoolJazzBand—withmanygroupscomingfromfurtheraway:theBemidjiStateUniversity(Minn.)BlueIceCombo,UniversityofNebraska-OmahaJazzI,andUniversityofNorthCarolina–PembrokeJazzCombo,amongothers. ButchMiles,formerdrum-merfortheCountBasieOrches-tra,explained“TripletsandJazzDrumming.”CurrentlyonthejazzfacultyatTexasStateUniversityinSanMarcos,Milesdemonstratedhisfavoriterudiment(theparadid-dle-diddle)aroundthedrumsetandansweredquestionsfromtheaudience.Heshowedhowstick-ingscanmakesubtledifferencesinsoundsandalsoplayedwithbrushes. Therewere111exhibitbooths,displayingeverythingfromrecordingsandsheetmusictoin-strumentsandaccessories.Therewerealsoseveraldozenschoolsrecruitingfuturejazzperform-ersandeducators.Someofthepercussion-orientedexhibitorsincludedAvedisZildjian,Conn-Selmer(Ludwig),D’Addario(EvansandProMark),PeterErskine’sFuzzyMusic,LoneStarPercussion,Mapex(whoprovideddrumsetsinalltherooms),Sabian,VicFirthCo.,andYamaha. bancaféwhenourfriendsaren’tlooking.Whenthemusicisgood,theurgetomoveisirresistible. Whilewedon’tfullyun-derstandwhymusiccompelsmovement,apairofresearchersworkinginMcMaster’sMAPLELab(Music,Acoustics,Perception&LEarning)havefoundthatitcanimproveoursenseoftimingandresultinabetterunderstandingofasong’sstructure—evenforthosewithlittleornomusicaltraining. “Whenyou’reonthebusorwalkingtoworkorschool,any-onewearinganiPodisusuallynoddingortappingalong,”saidMichaelSchutz,anassistantpro-fessorwhospecializesinmusiccognitionandpercussion.“Thatmovementisnotonlyenjoyable,itactuallyhelpsusgraspmusic’sstructure.Amazingly,wedon’tneedtobetaughttomovetomu-sic;childrendothisimplicitlyfromayoungage.” SchutzconductedtheresearchalongsideFionaManning,agradu-atestudentintheMcMasterInsti-tuteforMusic&TheMindwithaninterestinexploringmusic,move-ment,andperception.Aspartofthestudy,48undergraduateparticipantsdonnedasetofhead-
phonesandlistenedtoasequenceofwoodblocktones.Somehadnomusicalexperience,whileoth-ershadupto12yearsofmusicaltraining. Participantswereaskedtotapalongwiththebeatduringoneroundoftrials,andsitperfectlystillduringanother.Towardstheendofthemusicalsequence,listenersheardafewsecondsofsilencebeforethefinalnote.Attheconclusionofthetrial,listen-erswereaskedtoidentifywhetherthefinaltonewasearly,late,orrightontime. Movingtothebeathelpedlistenersrecognizewhenthefinaltonewasoff—especiallywhenitwaslate.Duringsubsequenttest-ing,theteamdemonstratedthatmovementwasmostcriticaldur-ingthesilence,intermsofmain-tainingthebeat.Theyfoundthisimprovementdidnotdependonmusicaltraining. Testingwasdoneusingaba-sic4/4timesignature—apopularchoiceamongpopsongwritersduetotherelativesimplicityandrepetitivenatureofthepattern.The4/4patterniseasyforfanstomovealongto,whichcanhelptheirunderstandingandenjoy-mentofthemusic. “Asolidbeatisoftenakeyele-
mentinhitsongs,andithelpslis-tenersmovealong.IfyouexaminetheBillboard‘Hot100’list,manyofthosesongshavearelativelysimplebeat,”saidSchutz.“Musicproducersandsongwritersrecog-nizethepulse’simportancetolis-teners,whofrequently‘tapalong’ormovewhenhearingtheirfavor-itemusic.” Nowweknowthatdancingdoesn’tjusthelpusenjoymusic,itactuallyhelpsushearitbetter. nizesandadministerstheannualPASSoloCompetition.Thecom-mitteehasfacilitatedanannualsolocompetitionforstudentsages18–25overthepastseveralde-cades. ThemissionofthePASsolocontestistoencouragethehigh-estlevelofartisticexpressionintheartofpercussionperfor-manceandliterature.Eachyear,thecontestoffersadifferentsolocategory,andovertheyearsithashighlightedawidevarietyofinstruments,styles,andliterature.Oneofthemostpopularcatego-ries,marimbasolo,isofferedev-erythreeyearsandtypicallydrawsthebiggestpoolofparticipants.
