WEDNESDAYJUNE 7THHISTORIC PRESENTATION NIGHT7:30 pm to 9:00 pmYankee Museum’s own Barry Levine will present the incredible story leading up to Japan’s surrender in World War II. So much came together to end the war: New weapons (B-29 bombers and the atomic bomb), political and military leadership driven to end the war, and extraordinary crews to do the flying. These factors, and the moral considerations of using the atomic bomb — issues which we continue to live with to this day — will be presented and discussed.

SATURDAYJUNE 10TH“AIR TO AIR PHOTOGRAPHY”ERIC DUMIGAN 2:00 pm to 4:00 pmEric will be sharing experiences and tips from many years of trying to capture the perfect picture of iconic aircraft. With over 300 articles and 3,000 photos published in his career, this guarantees to be an exciting adventure you don’t want to miss!

ON THE HORIZONVOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:SUE ARMSTRONG

Sue Armstrong’s father was a marine and a survivor of The

Battle of Iwo Jima during WW11. She felt that the Yankee

Air Museum would be a good place to honor him and all the

WW11 veterans. She began volunteering with the Dispatch

Riders Motorcycle club in 2006. One of the club’s goals is to

spread the word about the museum and encourage people to

visit and get involved.

Sue’s passion is working with veterans and seniors. In this

capacity she has volunteered with the Wounded Warriors

project, and homeless veterans. She has driven for long hours

between Detroit and Taylor to bring them together for special dinners. She worked with a

state-wide agency as a trouble shooter providing non-medical services to seniors.

Sue was born in Hawaii and moved to Michigan when she was two years old. Now she

lives in Southern Michigan, 9 miles north of Toledo. The drive from her home to YAM is

1 hour and therefore she is only able to volunteer at the store one day a week. She has

worked during Thunder Over Michigan and has been a crew member on the B-17.

Sue “loves people” and working in the store gives her the opportunity to meet the people

who come to the museum and to hear their stories. Volunteering at the Yankee Air Museum

has taught her “how important planes were in the war and about the part aviation played”.

On Saturday May 20, hundreds of guests made their way down

to Willow Run to enjoy our annual Bomber Buffing party and

the second annual Detroit Aviation & Airline Collectibles Show!

This was our second year that we combined both events into

one dual event at Hangar 1, Bays 7 and 8.

The Bomber Buffing was a great success, as always!

Members, volunteers, guests, and Rosie’s all made their way to

the vintage bombers to get them polished for the 2017 show

season! The Willow Run Tribute Rosie’s sweetened the day with

their Rosie Bake Sale which brought in hundreds of dollars for

the Save the Bomber Plant campaign!

We had a wonderful turnout for the day! The gorgeous weather

in May allowed us to fly both the C-47 “Fly the Pattern” route

and the WACO! We sold several flights on the WACO and eight

full flights on the C-47 with many, many happy customers! One

family surprised their father, 89-year old Retired Staff Sergeant

Richard Barker, with a flight on the C-47! The family, complete

with four generations, booked an entire flight so they could

all experience the ride together! Channel 7 News anchor Nia

Harden came out to document the special flight! Check out the

great news article here: http://www.wxyz.com/news/family-

surprises-war-veteran-with-a-trip-to-remember

The 2nd Annual Detroit Aviation and Airline Collections show

in Bay 7, next door to the Bomber Buffing, was a great

success as well! We hosted over 40 dealers who brought their

merchandise and memorabilia to sell! There was so much to

see and do! Guests came from all over the country, including

some from New England and others from the west coast in

Los Angeles! There was a great variety of items for sale, from

aircraft models to artwork, to vintage airline timetables, and in-

flight materials such as china, seat-back information packets,

swizzle sticks and more! Make sure you save the date for next

year’s show, May 5 2018!

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers and staff who

made this event possible! Thank you to the Collectible Show

dealers, EMU Aviation, Marco’s Pizza, and WCAA for your

continued support of this event!

THE BOMBERS HAVE BEEN BUFFED!
