The homeless are not recognized as human relative to other groups. They actually are perceived, at least in this area of the brain,

more like objects, such as tables.

“I am a single father and melanoma cancer survivor. I was born and raised in the Central Valley and after a divorce,

moved to Alameda County for employment and a fresh start.

Unfortunately I then lost my job due to increasingly severe health issues and became homeless as a result of no

income.” - Phillip

“My husband had his own business and has always been a great provider for our family. I worked for my children's school

as an Administrative Assistant. Our family went from owning a lucrative

business and me working at my children’s school, with a nice amount of

savings in hopes to purchase a new home for our family to being homeless

within 3 years.” -The Wheeler Family

“I'm originally from New Zealand but have been living in the Bay for the last 7 years. I have a disability - I'm paraplegic, and I'm homeless and currently living in a shelter.”

- Rodney

Say Hello

Start with something like

•  A Smile

•  “Good morning”

•  “Is there another way I can help you right now?”

•  “Can I buy you a coffee?”

•  Remember: not everyone will want your help, and that’s ok
