HANDS on LEARNING OVERVIEW WHAT IS HANDS on LEARNING WHO WE ARE WHAT WE DO Hands on Learning is an innovave in school program that schools use to increase aendance and student achievement by building personal and social skills and supporng the different ways young people learn. The Hands on Learning methodology was developed by Russell Kerr at Frankston High School in 1999 based on the principle of engaging students with authenc readily achievable tasks that focus on doing and build self-belief. Hands on Learning Australia and Save the Children joined forces 1st April 2017, bringing together the ambion to prevent early school leaving, and Save the Children’s vision of a world in which every child learns from a quality basic educaon. Today Save the Children’s HoL School Support team help more than 75 schools to implement Hands on Learning in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and the UAE. The Hands on Learning program adds value to school communies by supporng and mentoring vulnerable students to stay and achieve at school. We help schools to run Hands on Learning supporng student intake, and the recruitment, ongoing training and professional development of the arsan-teachers that the school employs to implement the HoL program.

PROGRAM UPDATE

FEEDBACK AND RECOMMENDATIONS:• Excellent recent parent night – wonderful turn out –

congratulations to the entire team

• Thank you to the school for hosting the recent HOL cluster meeting for other artisan-teachers

• It is obvious that Peter and Samantha have an excellent relationship with the students and have quickly developed an excellent rapport with the new students

• Lots of varied and interesting projects on offer for the students

• We recommend working on getting a greater balance of girls and boys

• Good use of Focus Plans – variation and relevance is evident

• We recommend that the Focus Plans are communicated back to the classroom teachers. Discussions around how this can happen are currently taking place with Year Level Coordinators

• Despite some complex behaviours and challenging group dynamics, Peter and Samantha are considered and consistent in their approach and strategies they use with the students

• The Student Tracker is being filled in extremely well. Samantha and Peter’s notes about the student and their behaviour has been excellent. Thank you for the student CCM surveys

• We recommend follow up with Teachers to get a larger quantity of surveys completed

• The HOL shed & precinct is clean, tidy and very well looked after

• The continued support from all the volunteers is highly valued

• We recommend that in collaboration with the Wellbeing team, Samantha and Peter make arrangements to speak about student intake at an upcoming staff meeting
