Race 1

#6 Mine Fast Philly

#5 Playing Smart

#3 Victorian Moon

#4 Senorita Uno

#6 MINE FAST PHILLY is by far the most experienced

runner in this field, making her 19th attempt to break her

maiden here, but has also shown more flashes of ability

than the rest. She has some tactical speed and can likely

beat this group if she is able to run something close to

her best race. #5 PLAYING SMART ran her best races

last season on turf. She had some bad trips, including a

very wide journey over the inner turf on October 23; the

lack of talent in this race makes the cutback to five

furlongs less of a concern. #3 VICTORIAN MOON ran a

pair of competitive seconds in soft groups early in her two

year old season, but tailed off badly after faltering badly

when dueling on the lead in the Victorian Queen Stakes.

She will likely be on the lead. #4 SENORITA UNO was an

okay second in her second start but was otherwise

disappointing as a two year old.

#2 Fiesta in Vegas

#9 Beau’s Beauty

#5 Dangerous Liaison

#6 J M R Bold Vision

#2 FIESTA IN VEGAS returns from Oaklawn where she

was able to run a couple of good races with a couple of

flat efforts as well. Her local form as a two year old was

respectable, including a runner up finish behind her

heavily-favoured stablemate Palace Two Step in

December. #9 BEAU’S BEAUTY plunges in for $7,500

after picking up several checks for $25,000 and $40,000

last year. She trained in Ohio over the winter and may

have a conditioning edge over some of the competition.

#5 DANGEROUS LIAISON made only three starts last

year between June 15 and July 31 before being put on

the shelf. She has some speed; on the right day she can

certainly win this. #6 J M R BOLD VISION went in and

out of form last year; her best races are competitive.

Race 3

#1 Midnight Brew

#7 Afleet Connection

#5 Our Petunia

#2 Gimbala

#1 MIDNIGHT BREW caught three soft spots in her three

wins last year, but was able to be run competitive efforts

against tough foes like Gwendoline H, Madison Way and

Yum Yum throughout the season. She has a lot of back

class and should be a serious front end threat. #7

AFLEET CONNECTION is by no means a model of

consistency, but on her best day is one of the most

talented runners in this group. However, her win on

October 23 with a 71 Beyer came in one of the softer

open races for cheap mares late in the season, and it

may attract more wagering action than it should. #5 OUR

PETUNIA won her non-three at Tampa by disqualification

then was empty in her first start against open company.

She comes into this race with a conditioning edge and

shortens up in distance. #2 GIMBALA went off form after

being claimed for $7,500 early last season but was able

to run a couple of better races at the end of the year.

Race 4

#9 More Chances

#4 Have a Souper Day

#7 Casanova Kitten

#10 Too Hot

#9 MORE CHANCES last race at Gulfstream in January,

taking a three-wide park on both turns, briefly making the

lead late on the turn before being unable to sustain his

bid in the final furlong. He has raced well in his three

attempts sprinting; the blinkers come back off for her first

start in the Breeda Hayes barn. #4 HAVE A SOUPER

DAY raced in two-week intervals for his first four starts,

frequently running well despite not quite meeting

expectations. It is clear he has talent and he has the

advantage of tactical speed; he may have appreciated

being freshened up. #7 CASANOVA KITTEN debuted in

a route in December where he set the pace. He lost the

lead on the far turn but rebid to take the lead again in the

stretch before being narrowly out-gamed in the stretch.

He has been training in Kentucky; seeing how he handles

the turf and the sprint distance will be interesting. #10

TOO HOT raced three-wide in the clear throughout in his

debut back in August. Although he held on for third, the

top three were 1-2-3 for the entire race and there was not

much closing; he returns as a gelding.

Race 5

#8 Flash of Silver

#6 Fahrenheit

#7 Chuck Willis (IRE)

#3 Pinky Dude

#8 FLASH OF SILVER did not appear to be empty as the

chart comment suggests when making his first start off of

the claim at Oaklawn on April 30. He should have speed

to follow here, and assuming he takes to the Tapeta his

recency edge could lead to a win. #6 FAHRENHEIT had

a pretty good 2019 campaign, especially when you factor

Page 2: Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Sunday, …...2020/06/07  · #4 Senorita Uno #6 MINE FAST PHILLY is by far the most experienced runner in this field, making her 19th attempt

in the numerous bad trips he had. He was able to perform

well off of the bench last year. #7 CHUCK WILLIS (IRE)

will make his first start since the 2018 Grey Stakes,

where he led for ¾ of a mile before emptying out. His win

in England came in a sprint; a wildcard. #3 PINKY DUDE

stalked a three horse duel before drawing clear in his

maiden win in August. He returned 10 days later,

appeared to be flat on the turn then was effectively eased

after being bounced between another foe and the rail at

the top of the stretch. There may be some potential in this

one.

Race 6

#3 Bend in the River

#4 Born to Be King

#9 Four Aces High

#11 Better Boogie

#3 BEND IN THE RIVER broke slowly, tried to rush into

the pack causing the rider to check down the backstretch,

then had to steady again on the turn before rallying to be

third on debut. He certainly showed a lot of potential; if he

has developed since the winter he could be a serious

player. #4 BORN TO BE KING was claimed for $40,000

in August and put in three solid races for the new

connections, including a pair of seconds over this surface

with Beyers that catch the eye in this field. #9 FOUR

ACES HIGH raced three times against maiden allowance

company last year, each on turf, running well in the first

two before being shelved in October. Like Born to Be

King, his speed figures stand out; blinkers are removed

for the first time. #11 BETTER BOOGIE was second in

the same race Bend in the River debuted in with a much

cleaner trip. Both of his last two starts were very good

efforts, but those consecutive good efforts may cause him

to go off at a shorter price than he should.

Race 7

#3 Foxxy Belle

#1 Hell N Wild

#5 Veil

#2 Fresh Dreams

#3 FOXXY BELLE was terrific after being claimed by the

trainer/owner combo of McKnight and Massis for $25,000

last summer, winning four of six including two starts at

this second allowance level. If she comes back this

summer as good as she was at the end of last year she

will prove very tough to beat. #1 HELL N WILD was given

some time off after coming up flat in the two-turn Algoma,

returning with a win at this class and a third behind Foxxy

Belle before running another even race in a route. She

has hit the board in every sprint race on her current past

performances. #5 VEIL was claimed for $62,500 last

June, and although she was far from a disastrous claim

she was somewhat of a disappointment. Her win at the

$40,000 level was essentially a group that could show up

at this level; certainly not without a shot. #2 FRESH

DREAMS closed out her short 2019 campaign with back-

to-back wins, first against open $25,000 foes and then in

a first level allowance. In the first win she beat Copper

Fox, who a few months before was a winner at this

second allowance level.

Race 8

#1 Tale of Vienna - Best Bet

#9 Fine Grit

#8 Stormfuhr

#5 Distinct Passion

#1 TALE OF VIENNA had off and on form last year. He is

able to race well as an off-the-pace sprinter, notably

finishing fourth behind a decent group of open $40,000

foes on October 4. He makes his first start off of a private

purchase and could take advantage of a race that looks

primed for a pace meltdown. #9 FINE GRIT was able to

notch three wins closing over the Fort Erie turf last

summer, then closed the season out with some good

efforts in tough, lower level claimers here including a

couple of races topped by the impressive Walkabout

Creek. He was training in Ohio before the winter; another

closing option. #8 STORMFUHR knocked on the door in

this condition quite a bit in the later half of the 2019

campaign. His consistency is respectable and his

stalking/closing style is ideal. #5 DISTINCT PASSION is

one of a number of rapid speed horses here. Although

winless last year he ran quite a few good races, and he

had excuses in some of his poorer showings.

Race 9

#7 Hurricane Dancer

#4 Kid Forester

#2 Silencium

#6 Precious Badge

#7 HURRICANE DANCER broke his maiden for $30,000

in New Orleans before hooking a field loaded with some

super classy open claiming types at Tampa, where he

had to race from between horses. He should greatly

appreciate getting to face non-twos here. #4 KID

FORESTER was a winner early in the 2019 campaign but

was shelved for six months after a disappointing effort in

June. His return in December was not bad but he was a

non-factor in his Gulfstream turf try; capable. #2

SILENCIUM did not waste time dropping down in value

last year after showing potential as a two year old in

2018. His last two starts were good efforts, including a

fourth in a blanket finish on closing day. #6 PRECIOUS

BADGE is win-shy but ran quite a few good races last

year. He showed some signs that two turns on the turf

Page 3: Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Sunday, …...2020/06/07  · #4 Senorita Uno #6 MINE FAST PHILLY is by far the most experienced runner in this field, making her 19th attempt

may be his ideal trip, but he did run well in some longer

Tapeta sprints last season.

Race 10

#9 Bread Crumbs

#3 All Inclusive

#11 G Prince of Silver

#2 Lookout Louie

#9 BREAD CRUMBS had two tries on the inner turf

before switching back to the synthetic where he got into

good form at the end of the season. He may not get the

pace setup he needs here but if he does he could

threaten at a good price. #3 ALL INCLUSIVE has

developed a habit of showing speed and stopping. He

drops in for a tag for the first time and the most obvious

other speed is his stablemate, who is drawn to the far

outside. #11 G PRINCE OF SILVER is the other main

speed contender here but will likely not be sent hard to

duel with his stablemate. He tried a variety of different

types last year and it appeared that sprinting on synthetic

suited him best. #2 LOOKOUT LOUIE will debut in what

looks like a fairly soft field. His sire hits at 10% with first

timers.

Race 11

#8 Money Matters

#3 Sundance Hit

#14 Lucky Street

#7 Silver Seabee

#6 Byebye Byebye

#8 MONEY MATTERS hit the board in six of his eight

starts as a juvenile, including a second behind eventual

Stakes winner Rockcrest early in the season. The fact

that he was still getting beat when dropping to the bottom

two year old level is a concern, but he looks very

competitive. #3 SUNDANCE HIT ran deceptively well

against a track bias on November 17 before making a

very premature move in a route on December 7. He

returned eight days later with a good second in a

comparable group; potentially live at a price. #14 LUCKY

STREET was empty when dropping into this level in late

September and was then put away. He has run races that

would make him a leading contender here. #7 SILVER

SEABEE was claimed for $30,000 out of a turf race in

New Orleans, a race where he was under a hold while

dueling wide before flattening out. He was then sent to

Oaklawn where he was scratched off of the AEs for

$12,500, so this drop in for $9,500 should not come as a

shock. #6 BYEBYE BYEBYE has been racing well

against cheap three year olds at Penn National; his

synthetic race in August was not too bad.
