Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, June 27th 2020 Race 1 #3 Souper Hot #1 Saltini #5 Silence Breakers #2 Rockcrest #3 SOUPER HOT was just outkicked 16 days ago after pressing Silence Breakers on the lead. He gets back onto turf which is likely his preferred surface and may be able to get a good trip following the other speed. #1 SALTINI exits a pair of midpack finishes in some salty races at Turf Paradise. He should appreciate getting to face non- threes, but he has not sprinted since his career debut. Luckily for him every other horse in this race has a tendency to show speed so he could have things set up well for him up front. #5 SILENCE BREAKERS was pressed by Souper Hot then gave way to be fourth on June 11. He showed a lot of potential as a juvenile and now tries turf for the first time. #2 ROCKCREST never looked entirely comfortable over the Gulfstream turf when finishing fifth in an age-restricted Stakes in March. Although his Keeneland race last fall was a good effort I’m not entirely convinced this horse isn’t better on the synthetic, but getting a slightly longer sprint over the E. P. Taylor as opposed to the more narrow inner courses he has tried could be a game changer. Race 2 #1 Tiz Priceless #4 My Cantata #5 Dolly Stormy #7 Burbank Road #1 TIZ PRICELESS came up empty when facing first level allowance foes on opening day. She had a lot of bad luck after being claimed last year; if she breaks well she could be following the speed while saving ground; upset potential. #4 MY CANTATA won four of her eight local starts last year. She shouldn’t be too far off of the lead for her first attempt over this course. #5 DOLLY STORMY ran her best races when able to get covered up trips last year, looking quite dull whenever she would get parked wide. There is speed to her inside so if she is able to drop down and get behind horses things could set up for her to run one of her better efforts. #7 BURBANK ROAD underperformed last year when facing much tougher company. She is more suited to synthetic but warrants a look on the class relief. Race 3 #1 Dancing Doll #3 Gelato Amore #6 Finding Perfection #4 Cindervella #1 DANCING DOLL tried second level allowance company on the Gulfstream turf in March and caught a race in which there was very little movement; the top four were the top four at every point. She gets significant class relief here. #3 GELATO AMORE is out of condition here but does not look out of place. She gave way late after dueling in the stretch with Wake Up Maggie on June 6; she had a very slow turf breeze in preparation for her turf debut. #6 FINDING PERFECTION was declared a non- starter after rearing badly 13 days ago. This will be her first start in 14 months; she had some good races in second level allowance company in the mid-Atlantic back in 2018. #4 CINDERVELLA forced the pace and evened out to be fourth 13 days ago. She picked up a number of checks last year and should be able to earn a share with this group. Race 4 #5 Old Secrets #4 Twomanyshots #7 Appella #3 Eight Speed #5 OLD SECRETS broke slowly but made a rally before being wrapped up on in the final furlong when debuting on June 6. There is probably potential for her to take a step forward. #4 TWOMANYSHOTS had a great trip in her turf start in October but did not accelerate, chasing to the wire. She seemed a touch immature last year and may have benefited from the winter off. #7 APPELLA set the pace on this course in the same October 26 race Twomanyshots competed in, finishing third in a five horse blanket photo. Both of her starts over the E. P. Taylor have been very good efforts, however it looks like there is other speed to her outside and the first time starters are obviously wildcards. #3 EIGHT SPEED has taken money in both of her starts to date and has disappointed. She wheels back in seven days, adds blinkers and tries turf for the first time. Race 5 #7 Slip’n Run #5 A. A. Fast Lida #3 Sweet Souper Sweet #8 Blu Sky Sunrise #7 SLIP’N RUN is by Big Screen, who has had some success in these shorter two year old races. Multiple Stakes-winning dam London Snow notched her debut at two and has a two year old winning foal in two to race.#5 A. A. FAST LIDA had been breezing in Ocala before arriving at Woodbine. She is the first foal to race out of an unraced dam; Fast Anna is six-for-40 with debuting two year olds and has produced three Stakes winners. #3 SWEET SOUPER SWEET is by First Samurai, who is only 8% with debuting juveniles but has hit at an impressive 21% with synthetic runners. The dam’s only foal to race has never been worse than third in six career starts. #8 BLU SKY SUNRISE is by Midshipman, a 14% two year old debut sire. The dam, Luna Blu had some talent and has thrown two winners in five foals, with some two year old success.

Race 1 #3 Souper Hot #1 Saltini #5 Silence Breakers #2 Rockcrest #3 SOUPER HOT was just outkicked 16 days ago after pressing Silence Breakers on the lead. He gets back onto turf which is likely his preferred surface and may be able to get a good trip following the other speed. #1 SALTINI exits a pair of midpack finishes in some salty races at Turf Paradise. He should appreciate getting to face non-threes, but he has not sprinted since his career debut.

She gets significant class

relief here. #3 GELATO AMORE is out of condition here but does not look out of place. She gave way late after dueling in the stretch with Wake Up Maggie on June 6; she had a very slow turf breeze in preparation for her turf debut. #6 FINDING PERFECTION was declared a non-starter after rearing badly 13 days ago.

Race 6

#5 Feeling Funny #6 Boardroom #4 Did I Stutter #10 Lady of the Hour #5 FEELING FUNNY ran a good third on opening day behind a talented winner and a runner up with a beautiful covered up trip. She should be on the lead but can run well sitting just off if someone like Lady Kratos guns to the front. #6 BOARDROOM has been touted as having ability. The dam broke her maiden in a turf route at Tampa; her only foal to race has not broke it’s maiden. Commission is 0-for-17 with first time starters older than two. #4 DID I STUTTER rallied into a clustered pace but was stopped late in the stretch as a foe ducked in front of him when trying the Laurel turf last month. Her Maryland form is quite solid and she warrants consideration. #10 LADY OF THE HOUR debuted in November, breaking slowly and getting a very wide trip. She definitely showed some promise and may offer good value.

Race 7 #6 Bourbon Extension #5 Guitar George #4 Avie’s Mesa #9 Freitag #6 BOURBON EXTENSION had a couple of wide trips at Tampa this winter which resulted in poor finishes but otherwise had good form down there. He has a recency edge over most of the competition. #5 GUITAR GEORGE raced well in most of his 2019 starts, ending the season with a decent fourth after racing quite wide on both turns. He is one of many contenders. #4 AVIE’S MESA drops in for a tag for the first time after being off for 11 months. He looks like the one to beat but he should not be taken at too short a price. #9 FREITAG ran a couple of poor efforts with wide trips later in 2019 but showed on a few occasions that when he does get a good trip he is still capable of competing in the mid-high open claiming ranks.

Race 8 #6 Malakeh (GB) - Best Bet #3 Amalfi Coast #5 Elizabeth Way (IRE) #2 Another Time #6 MALAKEH (GB) has gone through her allowance conditions in a small number of starts. She returned from a nine month break to win a third level allowance at Churchill in which she defeated a number of Stakes winners; she was Group 2 placed twice in Germany. #3 AMALFI COAST had a nightmarish trip over the inner turf on June 6, finishing sixth as the favourite. She gets a smaller field and a wider course to work with today and is clearly better than that last effort. #5 ELIZABETH WAY (IRE) raced wide and came up empty in the Mint Julep at Churchill on May 30. Despite the poor showing she was only beaten about six lengths and could rebound with a better trip. #2 ANOTHER TIME was forwardly placed and was able to prevail in the June 6 inner turf race. The complexion of that race was changed with Amalfi Coast’s

poor trip and some other tough journeys, but she does seem to be on the improve.

Race 9 #2 Storm Gauge #8 Wake Up Maggie #4 Sterling Speed #7 She’s a Dream #2 STORM GAUGE was closing but had to steady as she ran up on heels in late stretch on June 6. She is one of several exiting a close finish in that race. #8 WAKE UP MAGGIE dueled down the stretch and the lead but was picked up late in the June 6 race. She had a wide trip that day; hopefully she can save some ground today. #4 STERLING SPEED looked a bit rank and hard to ride but was able to prevail in a blanket finish to break her maiden on June 6. That race produced a good looking winner in Spanish Ballerina last week. #7 SHE’S A DREAM broke her maiden on debut then spent the rest of the season chasing tougher foes in Stakes company. She shortens up to a sprint for her three year old debut after two disappointing route attemps.

Race 10 #8 Livin in the Six #10 Hello Friends #2 Classy Gizmo #7 Baby Driver #9 Boscobel #8 LIVIN IN THE SIX debuted on June 6, beaten less than two lengths while being blocked for a good portion of the stretch run. With a clean trip she could be a big factor. #10 HELLO FRIENDS likely should have won on June 6 but was cut off by another rival swinging out in front of her and ended up splitting horses to be fourth in a blanket finish. #2 CLASSY GIZMO raced wide when debuting 13 days ago, finishing in midpack. A ground saving, covered trip should help her chances trying turf. #7 BABY DRIVER had no shortage of bad luck last year between poor trips and incidents at the gate. I think there’s some level of talent in this one; the winter off may have been beneficial. #9 BOSCOBEL debuted in our first two year old race of 2019, finishing midpack behind Owlette, who has gone on to win multiple Stakes. She has been off for nearly 14 months; blinkers are added.
