Dear guest,

we hope you had a good journey to Dresden. We are very happy to have you here as our guest in HELLERAU – European Center for the Arts Dresden.

We wish you an interesting, productive and successful time here at our center. We will do our best to make your stay a pleasant and convenient one.

HELLERAU is a Center for Contemporary Arts, mainly focused on dance, music and theatre and one of the leading venues for contemporary performing arts in Germany.

The Festspielhaus Hellerau with all its stages, rooms and facilities has a more than 100 years old history of arts, dance, music - but also a history of military occupation for a long period. The actual team is working since 2009 to make this house an important place for producing and presenting contemporary arts.

Artist’s residencies are an important part of our artistic concept. It is essential for us, that you feel well and welcome in our house and that you have a most productive and inspiring time here. Please do not hesitate to ask any question, assistance and help you might need from us and contact the responsible persons, if you would have any problems to solve.

This handbook will provide you with some useful information for your stay in HELLERAU and in Dresden.

Once again, WELCOME and have a pleasant and productive stay here.

Warm regards

Dieter Jaenicke(Artistic Director)and the HELLERAU-team

Welcome to HELLERAU European Center for the Arts Dresden

Welcome to our apartments! We are very happy to have you on our premises and hope you can exploit your time here in the most fruitful and positive way. To make this stay as pleasant as possibly imaginable, please note the following small advises and pleads from our side.

1. KEEP YOUR KEY WITH YOU ALL THE TIME! Doors around here close easily and then you won't be able to re-enter.

2. For your departure:

10 am - 6 pm (on week-days):11 am - 6 pm (weekend):

Please leave the apartment-key at the visitor-center.

If you leave after 6 pm, please lock the main door. Go outside towards the exit by the street and put it in the white mailbox with the blue HELLERAU-sticker.

3. We carefully prepare your rooms for your arrival, please take care of them while you are here .

4. If you like smoking, please do so outside - inside fire detectors will spoil the fun.

5. Please always lock the main door of the building from 7 pm onwards, since you never know who would like to come and visit.

6. Be careful not to loose your key and the beep-thingy. Replacing the lock is quite expensive.

7. Fresh air is a very good thing, but please close the windows when you are not in the apartment for safety reasons.

8. We love to save energy, this is why we would ask you to make sure to turn off all electronic devices, heating and lights whenever not needed.

9. Candle-light can be very romantic, but please don't let the romance be unattended.

10. We change towels and bed linen on a regular basis, if you need an extra change in-between, please let us know.

- 4 -

If you want to cook yourself:

There is a LIDL just one tram-stop away (tram no. 8, direction: Hellerau / stop: Brunnenweg). Walking takes about 10 minutes. It provides you with all basic groceries from Monday to Saturday from 7 am - 9 pm. For better quality supermarkets you'd have to take the tram no. 8 (direction: Südvorstadt) towards the city center. For more shopping options: check page 11.

If you like eating out:

Restaurants are also quite rare in these surroundings, but take the tram to the city and you'll find whatever your heart desires:

Dresden Neustadt is the vibrant and hip part of town with many restaurants, take-away-places, bars and clubs. To get there, just take tram no. 8 (direction Südvorstadt) and get off at stop Louisenstraße. Then walk into Louisenstraße and explore.

Dresden Altstadt is the historic part of town, there are many things to see such as galleries, museums and old historic buildings. Take tram no. 8 (direction Südvorstadt) and get off at stop Theaterplatz. You will find yourself in front of the Semper Opera and all major sights are in its immediate vicinity.

For more detailed options: check pages 12-16

If you have any questions, problems or things you like to share with us, just let us know!

We wish you a pleasant stay!

In Gardencity Hellerau

Hellerau was founded in 1909 as the first gardencity of Germany by the furniture manufactorer Karl Schmidt. As a passionate follower of the contemporary “back to nature”-Lebensreform idea, he created the village as living space for his workers. Therefore Hellerau was supposed to live up to all the specific needs of its inhabitants. Thus the Festspielhaus was built in 1911 including the pioneering visions of Adolphe Appia and Emile Jaques-Dalcroze.

In Dresden-Neustadt

This is the trendy and vibrant quarter of Dresden with countless bars, unique stores and many opportunities for dancing. You will hardly find a place that transports more of the atmosphere of Old Dresden. This quarter is located between Bautzner Straße and Priessnitzstraße, Bischofsweg and Königsbrücker Straße, and is brought alive by the contrast between buildings that have already been carefully restored and old, run-down houses, from fancy cocktail bars and traditional taverns, from trendy pubs and specialty restaurants around Alaunstraße and Louisenstraße. Whether Spanish, French, Turkish or Italian, the cuisine is international, and there is no official closing hour.

Exclusive dinner as an event. Watch the cook while creating your meal – reservation recommended.

Both in the selection and in the preparation of meals there are aspects reminiscent of the former G.D.R.: down-to earth food, prepared from fresh and organic local ingredients. The garden, a green oasis in the courtyard, is a great place to relax and share memories of old times. Therefore, the Planwirtschaft is absolutely worth visiting.

The restaurant offers a brilliant cuisine with breakfast, a number of different national dishes and fresh salads. Affordable prizes!

In Dresden's historic centreFor centuries, Dresden was the residence of the Wettin royal family. Today, Dresden is one of the most beautiful Baroque cities in Europe and a bustling metropolis at the same time. It has been developing into a modern city, the attraction of which is based in equal measure on its many artistic and cultural treasures as well as on its progressive and broad-based scientific and industrial prowess. The best way of seeing the historic city centre is on foot beginning with its main attractions: Semper Opera, the Zwinger, Frauenkirche, Royal Palace and Brühl’s Terrace. Just get inspired by the beauty of Saxony’s capital!
