Hand Tools –Presentation #4

Cutting and Shaping Tools

Warm Up (Think-Write-Pair-Share)Think of a time when you or someone you know used a saw, knife, or some kind of filing tool (doesn’t have to be in construction)

Answer the following questions (1 min. per question)• What were the safety concerns?

• What safety protocols were taken? Were any safety protocols taken?

• Did you/they inspect the tool before use?

• What did you (should you) have looked for during inspection?

Backsaw• The standard blade of this saw is 8”

to 14” long.

• A backsaw has a broad, flat blade and a reinforced back edge.

• A backsaw is used for cutting joints, especially miter joints and tenons.

• The reinforced back keeps the blade straight and true.

Miter Box• A miter box is a wood working

tool used to guide a hand saw to make precise miter cuts in a board.

• The most common form of a miter box is a 3-sided box which is open at the top and the ends.

• The box is made wide enough to accommodate the width of the boards to be cut.

Miter Box and Backsaw vs. Power Miter Saw

Hacksaw• The standard blade of this saw is

8” to 16” long.

• It has a sturdy frame and a pistol-grip handle.

• The blade is tightened using a wing nut and a bolt.

• The hacksaw is used to cut through metal such as nails, bolts, or pipe.

Handsaw• The standard blade of this saw

is 26” long. • There are two types of

Handsaws• A crosscut saw is designed to cut

wood across or against the grain.• A ripsaw is designed to cut wood

in the same direction or with the grain.

Handsaws (ripsaws and crosscut saws) have the fewest teeth per inch, resulting in

larger teeth.

Coping Saw• This saw has a narrow,

flexible blade attached to a U-shaped frame.

• The coping saw is used for making irregular-shaped moldings fit together cleanly.

Keyhole Saw•This saw cuts curves quickly in wood, plywood, or wallboard.

•The keyhole saw is used to cut holes for large-diameter pipes, vents, and plugs or switch boxes.

Drywall Saw

•A drywall saw is a long, narrow saw used to cut softer building materials such as drywall.

• The blade of a drywall saw has a very sharp point to easily poke a hole to start a cut without drilling a starter hole.

Crosscutting Lumber (Cutting Against the Grain)

• Mark the cut with a square

• Support and secure the work area. Wear gloves.

• Place the saw teeth against the wood on the side away from you.

• Align the edge of the blade teeth with your cut line.

Crosscutting Lumber (Cutting Against the Grain)

• With the saw handle near the workpiece and at a 45-degree angle, begin drawing the saw up and back towards you slowly.

• After a slight kerf is formed by drawing the saw back, push the saw forward.

• Continue sawing in this manner. There is no need to ride or push the saw down into the wood. A sharp saw will take care of itself.

• Maintain the 45 degree angle and keep the saw blade aligned to the mark until your cut is complete.

Inspecting a Hand Saw and Work Area

•Make sure you have the proper saw for the task at hand.

•Make sure your work is secure and will not move or slide when sawing.

•Make sure your blade is sharp.

•Make sure your blade is not rusted, warped, or teeth are bent.

Hand Saw Safety•Wear Gloves

•Brace yourself and keep your balance

• Secure saws when working at heights or above others

•Clamp or secure the material you are cutting

Files• Files are used to cut,

smooth, or shape metal and wood parts.

• There is a specific type of file for different material.

• They come in different profiles and textures depending on the material and desired cut.

Single-cut files are used to sharpen edges, such as rotary motor blades.

Double-cut files are used for fast cutting and material removal.

Utility KnivesMany different types:1. Retracting Knife2. Self-Retracting Knife3. Folding Knife4. Carpet Knife

Used to cut anything from asphalt roof shingles, boxes, drywall, vinyl flooring, etc.

Utility Knives - Safety• Utility knives have a high rate of injury and

can inflict serious damage on the body in an instant.

• Never cut toward yourself or anyone else

• Wear gloves

• Retract the blade any time cutting is not in progress!

Self-retracting knives are the safest type of utility knife and may be required on some job sites.

When using a utility knife, place a piece of scrap

material under the object you are cutting in order to protect the surface

under the object.

We Do Assignment• Analyze the picture of a job site on the board of

tradespeople using cutting tools…

• What tools are the people in the picture using?• What were the safety concerns?• What safety protocols were taken? Were any safety protocols

taken?• Is the worker using proper technique?• What should they have looked for during inspection of the

tools before starting work?
