10 Patterns for Practice

E ach of these samples incorpo-rates all the 12 stitches. It is de-

signed as such so that you can learn all the stitches while working on a single pattern. For more patterns, please visit our 3 Stitches at A Time Project page.

1 The Color Wheel This pattern will serve as a sam-

pler for the 12 Basic Stitches and a color guide in the form of the color wheel!

2 Rolling Hills This pattern will show you how

each stitch looks against the other. The internal lines are mere guides, and you can draw your own stitch lines.

3 The Ocean The texture of each stitch can be

understood as you fill in the waves in this pattern. For those who love the ocean, this is a beautiful pattern.

4 The Universe This is a mixed media project.

Hand embroidery stitches can be fused with other mediums. Paint or color your pattern before you start stitching.

5 Happiness Hand embroidery can be used

for writing and decorating the space around it. Stitching positive words generate positive energy.

6 Wild Flowers This pattern will show you

how to use hand embroidery stitches in combination with each other and generate different effects. You can use the stitches in your own way too.

7 Mandala For mindful stitching, nothing

is as enjoyable as stitching a man-dala. If you enjoy doing this, I en-courage you to make more mandala designs of your own.

8 Dragonflies This pattern will give you an

idea of how a single layer of differ-ent stitches can be used for fillings. Check out the wings. They are out-lined using the Back Stitch for a finishing.

9 Flower Burst This pattern will give you an

idea of combining various stitches in different ways to fill in a larger area of fabric. Add your own floral de-signs if you like!

10 Pincushion This is a project which in-

volves a bit of sewing. Make yourself a simple pincushion to keep your working needles, while it shows you all the 12 Basic Stitches! You only need some fabric, and cotton or similar filling along with your hand embroidery tools.

Making the Pincushion

1 Cut two pieces of fabric 4"x 4" . Trace or draw your pattern on one of the fabrics, as shown. Stitch the embroidery.

2 Next, place both the pieces on top of each other with the good side turned

inwards. Then, stitch the edges with the Running Stitch. Leave a 2" gap on one of the sides.

3 Turn the fabric inside out through the 2" gap. Now, through that gap

fill in cotton or any similar filling. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

4 You can now sew up the gap.

Next, work the Blanket Stitch around the edges. This would secure the edges and you will also learn how to use the Blanket Stitch in a new way!

Your very own pincushion is ready to be used. You just made something beautiful! Congratulations!
