Eastern Long Island, known for its beautiful beaches is also home to wine country. With its maritime climate, warm summers, cool breezes, unique soils, and long growing season, it has 3,000 acres of vineyards, 51 wine producing. The North Fork has 47, while the South Fork has four. Here is just a sampling.

Bedell Cellars in Cutchogue, founded in 1980 by Kip and Susan Bedell, has three vineyard sites with 80 acres planted in vines. In 2000, film executive and art collector, Michael Lynne, purchased Bedell Cellars, where his art collection is displayed. Winemaker, 30-year veteran Richard Olsen-Harbich, wrote the region into existence in 1986. Featured varietals are Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, and Viognier, among others. Events include wine tastings, vineyard walks, weddings, and live music. Among their awards,

In 1978, Robert Entenmann purchased Martha Clara Vineyards in Riverhead, naming it after his mother. By 1998, 102 of 200 acres were planted in vines. His daughter Jacqueline helps run the farm. General manager and winemaker Juan Micieli-Martinez, joined the vineyard in 2007. Over 20 different wines are made from the varietals Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Merlot, among others. Events include concerts, festivals, horse and carriage rides, and free live music. Theresa “Tree” Dilworth, owner and winemaker of Comtesse Thérèse Winery and Bistro in Aquebogue, purchased the first female-owned vineyard with friends in 2001. Twenty of 42 acres are planted in vines. In 2010, she opened the French-American Bistro, the only Long Island vineyard restaurant. Aristodemos “Arie” Pavlou, classically trained at L’École Cordon Bleu in Paris is the chef. Unique wines are Russian Oak Chardonnay, Hungarian Oak Merlot and Canadian Oak Cabernet Sauvignon. Theresa says “Long Island wines are food friendly, not overpowering.” Complimenting her delicate wines are local produce, fish, duck, and cheese. As the first vineyard to shuck raw oysters, they feature an oyster bar at the winery and a Wine, Beer and Oysterfest from June to October. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Wölffer Estate Vineyard & Stables in Sagaponack, founded in 1988 by Christian Wölffer, who died in 2008. Co-owned by his son Marc and daughter Joey, 175 acres include 65 planted in vines and the 100-acre Wölffer Estate Stables.

In 1992, Roman Roth became partner and winemaker, creating his signature wine “The Grapes of Roth.” Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are the main varieties. Events include live music in the Tasting Room on Twilight Thursdays and at the Wine Stand on Sunset Fridays. Sculptor, Walter Channing purchased a Bridgehampton farm in 1979 and planted his first vines in 1982. In 1997 he founded Channing Daughters Winery, named after his four daughters, with 28 acres planted in vines. Channing’s sculptures can be found throughout the Sculpture Garden Vineyard. In 2002, Allison Dubin, became the general manager and partner. Her husband Christopher Tracy,

Q: As one of the more successful brokers in the Hamptons, what is it that sets you apart from the pack?A: The three rules of being a good broker is listen, listen, listen. Often times what buyers and sellers want is heard between the sentences. I try my best to be keenly aware of what they are trying to convey. I have the experience to know and understand that although properties and people can initially appear to be similar, they are always unique. It’s incredibly important to work with a broker who knows the individual markets. Real estate is always local based on location and the property size and many other factors. Q: Can you tell us about some of your more notable sales?A: 329 Highland Terrace sold for $18.75 million, 54 Lee Avenue sold for $7 million, 10 Lily Pond sold for $6.7 million. The above mentioned sales are three I am particularly proud of because they all sold quickly and close to their asking prices. I am happy to see the East Hampton Village Estate area sales so strong, and I think prices are now where they should be. There is not an inch of ground, street or house I am not familiar with. Montauk to Southampton remains especially strong in the prime areas.

Q: How would you describe your selling style?A: Professional and caring. The acronym I use is HOW: Honest Open and Caring. By giving that to customers and clients they are getting the best service possible. I like to develop a comfort level with sellers and buyers and always communicate in a positive, productive manner. I don’t like to waste their time; I know how valuable it is.

Q: What do you like to do for fun in the Hamptons…after selling real estate, of course? A: I love to bike and walk on the beach. I also enjoy the many great restaurants.

Q: What is the most challenging aspect of being a real estate broker?A: Real Estate is a cyclical, competitive business. My challenge is to stay focused, keep the drama in perspective and know that provided I keep my priorities in place, all my hard work will pay off in good time.

After a hot summer day out east, whether it is by the ocean, the sound, the bay, or at the pool, the coolest feeling of all might just be the stream of fresh water coming down from your fabulous outdoor shower. Unlike an indoor shower, an outdoor shower lets you enjoy the fresh air, open sky, and even a view of the ocean or bay, while leaving all that sand, saltwater, chlorine, and sunblock behind. And since an outdoor shower can be used from April to November, it will also save on the wear and tear of your indoor shower.

Joseph R. LaFace, founder of Joseph R. LaFace Construction, Inc. since 1987, has designed many outdoor showers over the course of his career. He custom built and designed his own outdoor shower for his newly built home with a pool in East Quogue. According to Joe, the best place to build your outdoor shower is within easy access to the interior of your home. Materials such as cedar or mahogany are best as they are long lasting and durable, able to withstand all weather conditions. For the interior of the shower, it is best to use a natural or light stain, with not much sealant as it is enclosed and unable to dry out like the exterior. Designing an outdoor shower takes an artistic flair to make it both blend in with the environment and stand out as a decorative piece. Joe chose cantilevered decorative beams for the outside perimeter. He also designed a unique long-lasting wooden slide-bolt handle for the door and chose a stain to match the siding of the house. He built lattice around the top for a more open feeling and designed a separate partition for a changing

room with a matching bench and towel holder. So after a dip in the pool, you can leave that chlorine outside and feel refreshed under the open sky.

Tony Villar, artist and carpenter, known for his imaginative Tikis at Ditch Plains in Montauk, designed and built an outdoor shower for a Mediterranean-style home up on the cliffs of Montauk overlooking the ocean. This artistic shower is made of cedar planks, slightly weathered, blending in with the natural grapevine arbor overhanging the courtyard beside the lattice wall. The shower has a partition on the inside with a bench for changing. On the outside there is a built-in multi-use table for drying wet towels and bathing suits. Or it can be used for entertaining, functioning as a serving table for food and drinks. It also has a decorative use with metallic artwork displayed on the side. At the upper back of the shower is a framed opening with a view, so while rinsing off you can look out at the spectacular ocean below.

After spending time in the sun, whether by the ocean, the sound, the bay, or at the pool, cooling off in your outdoor shower is a delightful and refreshing way to relax, while dreaming of more fun-filled days to come.
