The feel of family and homely living is also a big attraction in Hamptons homes. They’re designed to have all the family in one room to create conversation.

Walking to the beach and coming back to a home with doors wide open, is the big appeal of the Hamptons. This style has been built for over 200 years, and it has evolved from small, ‘beach shacks’ to the grander homes you see today.

The attraction is the neutral colour palette, light and spacious living areas, natural textures, high ceilings and detail, detail, detail throughout, with a major focus on the kitchen.

Living an indoor / outdoor lifestyle screams “Build Me!” for the Australian Lifestyle. There are many styles within the Hamptons that can be interpreted into glamour: high end, coastal, Hamptons-inspired with a twist of modern, minimalist, and even a country feel or traditional classic.

Outside cladding is a specific detail when building this style of home, and is the hallmark of creating the opulent, through to the basic single storey home.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK The Hamptons style is all about the details. This book dives into the details which can be used to turn Australian homes into beautiful Hamptons inspired homes. It doesn’t matter if you’re about to build new on sprawling acreage or on a small lot. Or if you’re renovating a fibro home or extending a brick home. Or even if you’re in a coastal, country or urban setting.

Use this book like a catalogue and fill your shopping basket with pictures. Save as many images as you can to build a vision of your home. Then use those images to find a designer or builder who gets it, and who can help make your dream home come true.

    3. CONTRASTING TRIMSMuch of the Hamptons curb appeal comes from the interplay between the muted colour of the weatherboards and the contrast created by crisp white trims and architectural features. Window and door frames should be fattened up with timber moldings or durable fibre cement Axent™ Trim.

    2. WEATHERBOARD WALLSYou can’t have a Hamptons home without shadow lines.

In the US, these are created by shingles which bleach into a light grey. In Australia an authentic look can be

achieved by Linea™ Weatherboards from James Hardie’s Scyon™ range. The smooth 16mm thick boards created

    deep, sharp shadow lines.

    1. ROOF DETAILSGabled Roofs A gabled roof design is where two roof panels are pitched to meet in the centre of a building. Like an inverted V. The gable is the triangular upper part of the wall. In Hamptons homes this is normally cladded with weatherboards and features attractive details like windows and vents

    4. FRONT & BACK VERANDAHSVerandas are welcoming. They contribute a relaxed feel.

While you might not get much use from a verandah overlooking the street, it’s important for the Hamptons

aesthetic. A verandah gives the façade articulation and can be styled with a beautiful balustrade, planter boxes and

    outdoor furniture.

    6. NAUTICAL THEMEThe Hampon’s refers to a group of seaside townships on Long Island New York. That’s where the nautical theme

comes from. Interior walls are normally crisp white. They’re a canvas behind styling pieces in ocean colours:

navy, duck egg blue, whites and soft greys.

    5. OUTDOOR FURNITUREHamptons is about relaxing and having an outdoor lifestyle. Outdoor furniture should be crisp white to match the trims. It’s hard to go past a set of laid back Adirondack Chairs (see image far left) with cushions. White deck chairs with navy canvas can also work well.

RoofDETAILS Colorbond® steel roofs suit the Hamptons style with popular colours being

Surfmist, Shale Grey and Windspray. Similarly Colorbond® fascia and gutter colours can be matching or contrasting. A contemporary twist is to highlight an interesting roofline with dark grey Monument or Basalt selections.

GABLE DETAILSIn Hamptons homes gables are a defining aesthetic which can be spectacular. This triangular part above the wall can

be in weatherboard to match the wall. Or it can have a different look such as HardieFlex™ sheets with contrasting

vertical trims. Gables are perfect places for beautiful details such as circular or square gable vents or windows.

CUPOLASA cupola is a small dome-like structure on top of the roof used to admit light or air into a building. A window cupola suits a high ceiling and can fill a room with light. A vent cupola is more likely to be used as a classic architectural feature though it can also be used to cool a roof cavity.

EAVESNormally eaves are unremarkable. But with the

Hamptons style they can be a feature. A nice way to detail eaves is with the look of jointed timber which

can be achieved easily with HardieGroove™ sheets. Down lights can be a nice feature in eaves too.

RAFTER TAILSAn alternative to eaves is to have exposed rafter

tails. These are a detail which makes a home look hand-crafted. They’re a decorative touch done in

the same crisp white as the window trims.

EAVES RETURNSAn attractive detail which helps separate walls and gables is an eaves return. They’re a traditional Hamptons detail and an effort which will take a Hamptons build to the next level.

BELLY BOARDA belly board is a contrasting trim often used with cladding as a horizontal dividing line. It can be used to aesthetically separate one storey from another or separate a wall from a gable. If you have a large wall and a steeply pitched roof with a large gable a belly board can break up the large expanse.

    WALLS AND

    WeatherboardsLINEA™ WEATHERBOARDS

Linea™ Weatherboards work well for both classic and contemporary looks. They create bold horizontal shadow lines.

Made from James Hardie’s premium fibre cement, they standup to Australia’s harsh climate and are resistant to termites, fire and

    damage from moisture.

Linea™ Weatherboards are 16mm thick, 75% thicker than any other James Hardie weatherboards in order to get the deep shadow lines.

The 180mm profile has an effective cover of 150mm due to the 30mm overlap from the board above. It’s the most popular profile because

there are just 6.7 boards per meter of height. The 150mm profile has a 130mm effective cover and requires 8.3 planks per meter.

AXENT™ TRIM CORNERWeatherboards can be butted into vertical trim as a feature.

This is sometimes called a weatherboard stop. Trim pieces can be painted contrasting colour to nicely frame weatherboard walls.

Two pieces of Axent™ Trim, a 38 x 45mm and 89 x 38mm trim can be used to form a nice wide trimmed corner.

CORNER SOAKERAnother nice detail for corners is with a corner soaker. This is an easy way to create the look of a mitred corner.

    CORNERS

SLIMLINE BOX CORNERIf you don’t want to make a feature out of the corners,

a subtle slimline box corner accessory can be used and painted the same colour as the weatherboards.

SLAB EDGE COVERLinea™ Weatherboards must be installed with a minimum clearance of 150mm from the earth on the exterior of a building which sometimes reveals an unattractive cement slab. HardieEdge™ is an architectural slab edge cover. An attractive finishing touch and another trim options.

BALUSTRADESIf you have an elevated front veranda a white wrought iron balustrade in a diagonal pattern can be a beautiful touch which adds an interesting variation to the inevitable horizontal and vertical lines created by the cladding and posts.

FRETWORK & PORCH POSTSTimber fretwork can be used to decorate eaves, gables,

verandahs, balustrades and porticos. It gives a classic hand-crafted feel to the façade. Porch posts can be dual or single posts. They can be plain or decorative.

Used in combination with fretwork to create stunning facades and front entrances.

    WINDOW & DOOR TRIMSJames Hardie’s Axent™ Trims are a

durable choice around windows and doors. The 89mm wide sizes suit the wide

contrasting trims of the Hamptons style. Made from fibre cement it won’t warp, split

or crack and it’s resistant to termites, fire and damage from moisture.

SOFFITSVerandahs and alfresco areas are ideal for the indoor outdoor Hamptons lifestyle. Soffits, verandah ceilings, can benefit from the vertical joint look using HardieGroove™ lining. Soffits can include skylights lined up with interior windows, to bring natural light indoors, and ceiling fans or outdoor heaters for use all-year-round.

A modern take on the Hamptons style is for a reverse monochromatic palette where the boards are white and the trims are black. Darker greys and bluish greys are becoming and Australian interpretation of the Hamptons colour palette.

High ceilings, prominent detailing and feature kitchens are hallmarks of the Hamptons style. Commonly used materials are wood flooring, Carrara marble bench tops and vertical joint wall panels (HardieGroove™). Living areas need to be neutral tones with pops of blue and white. Indoor plants help bring a natural element into the space. Then beautiful fabrics and eclectic pieces bring a homely feel to rooms.

Hamptons homes bring people together in open plan living areas. Family and friends should congregate around the kitchen island bench tops as food is being prepared. Then head to outdoor settings for lunch. Or sit around a large dining table for dinner.

Lighting brings your home to life, it creates the mood and it’s a reflection of status. Start with wall sonces either side of the entry. They also work well

either side of the bathroom mirror or repeated along a hallway. Put a chandelier in the power room.

Use beautiful pendants in the bedroom and 2 or 3 above the island bench in the kitchen. Use lamps on

side tables and consoles to bring designer detail.
