“Pride to me is being who I am. It’s being proud of the per-son I am, and proud of the tremendous advancements in rights and acceptance the LGBTQ Community has made and is still making. The LGBT Liaison Officer Program means that I am able to help those in the LGBTQ Community understand that we in law enforcement are not here to harass anyone; we are here to help and provide a safe community for ev-eryone. I want the LGBTQ community to know that I’m a proud member of both the law enforcement and LGBTQ communities and I’m here to answer questions and treat everyone equally. For my department, I’m a resource not only for our LGBTQ staff, but anyone who has a question and wants to know more about positive interaction with the LGBTQ community.”
—GUYH.SAUCIER,VIRGINIABEACHSHERIFF’SOFFICE
“Pride is loving and accepting everyone for who they are no matter what your personal beliefs may be. Being a li-aison for the Hampton Police Division has helped break down barriers and predetermined ideas that both sides have of each other. I joined the Hampton Police Division to help people and this position has allowed me to con-tinue with this journey by bringing two entities together with respect and acceptance being the main goal.”
—SGT.NAKIAPEEK:HAMPTONPOLICEDIVISION
“Being the LGBT liaison for Virginia Beach Police Depart-ment has given me a platform to dispel misinformation about both the law enforcement and LGBT communi-ties. I am able to be a positive resource for both officers and citizens who have questions but are afraid to ask, or don’t know where to go to find answers. This position is a great way to bridge the communication gap between both groups and find new opportunities to build stronger relationships within our community.”
—SGT.MICHELEL.MEISTER:VIRGINIABEACHPOLICEDEPARTMENT
“The public safety liaison program is an opportunity for us to build productive, meaningful relationships with the LGBT community in Hampton Roads, to listen to concerns, and find out how we can help. The better we know the communities we serve, the better we can protect them.”
—FBIPUBLICINFORMATIONOFFICERCHRISTINAPULLEN, NORFOLKOFFICE
OUR LGBT LIAISON OFFICERS
SPEAKUP!
“Pride allows people to express who they are without worrying about others opinions because they don’t un-derstand or care to get to know the person on the inside. Being an LGBT liaison allows me to learn about a com-munity and culture and bring that information back to my agency. It allows me to ask the hard questions and pro-pose changes to become a more inclusive agency to be policed by and work for.”
—SERGEANTJESSICAPENNINGTON, NEWPORT NEWS POLICE DEPARTMENT
“We like that the LGBT citizens of Chesapeake have a di-rect person of contact to reach out to for assistance, if a need arises in the community. As well as a point of con-tact within our department for fellow officers to reach out to for peer support.”
—ELLENM.GONZALES,SENIORPOLICEOFFICER, CHESAPEAKEPOLICEDEPARTMENT
“To me, Pride means living your life with both integrity and dignity. Pride means being true to yourself and who you are. Pride means being unafraid to be yourself.”
—DET.SEANROWAN,CRIMINALINVESTIGATIONSDIVISION, SUFFOLKPOLICEDEPARTMENT
“It’s about celebrating our true authentic self’s and never allowing negativity and hatred to win in a world that de-serves equality for all. #LoveisLove”
—LIEUTENANTMERYAHBREEDEN,NORFOLKSHERIFF’SOFFICE
“Hampton Roads Pride has been and continues to be a great partner in helping to build respectful and honest bridges of communications being between the LGBTQ and Law Enforcement communities. Two communities, which historically were at odds with and distrustful of each other. Pride means that I can serve the best interest of both communities by being honest and ethical in my actions.”

It is hard to believe that we are in the midst of celebrating thirty years since the inception of Hampton Roads Pride. The hard-work and commitment of the members, volunteers and partners have been a testament to the success that the LGBTQ community has achieved thus far.
We are about to celebrate Hampton Roads Pride’s 30th PrideFest at Town Point Park and our Seventh Annual Pride Block Party at the Norfolk Scope. This year, our community is sharing in a week of education, spiritual and true comradery.
Our society was not always like it is today. Travel with me…
Your child is going to the movies with a group of friends. They leave your home happy and content. While at the theater, your child has to go use the facilities. While in there, they can hear whispering, the door opening and closing several times, then there is a knock on the door and there’s a voice saying, “Sir, this is the manager, you have to come out of there. This is the women’s restroom and you have to leave now! Your child steps out of the stall and says, “But I AM a woman!”
Travel with me again…
You are in your uniform and every time you put it on, you feel confident, courageous and proud of who you are and what you do. However, you have a secret and every time you think of this secret, you feel afraid that someone will learn your secret. You worry about losing your career, you and your family’s livelihood and all that you have worked for. So you tuck that secret far down, and choke on it yet again.
These are just a small sample of the stories our community deals with every day. Although we have won the right to love, and to serve our country, we are still disenfranchised by laws, by society and even each other. That is why I am proud to serve on the board of Hampton Roads Pride. Serving as President has given me the opportunity to be a voice, a command for equality and a listening ear for the communities needs and wants.
Hampton Roads Pride exists to empower the LGBT community. We encourage each other to stand as unique individuals. We boldly serve to educate the public regarding our issues, our personal stories and our feelings, with hope of total acceptance as valuable members of our communities.
Our membership and their families are a colorful blend of male & female, straight, gay & transgender, black, brown, white & yellow. Our members and the participants at our events are a mirror reflection of the diversity found within our organization. All are welcome and we encourage you to be a part of something very special.
Hampton Roads Pride is blessed to have many friends who support our causes and also give generously to enable us to continue the fights and celebrate the successes. We want to give special thanks to the City of Norfolk, Decorum Furniture, Newport News Shipbuilding, WHRO Public Media and many other businesses and individuals who contributed to make this year’s PrideFest and Pride Block Party possible. We couldn’t do this without our friends and allies support.
Again, I say thank you and the fight is not over! We will carry on to show love, dignity, inclusion and respect for ourselves and our community.
Sincerely,
Fawn Falks President Hampton Roads Pride

CLAUS ILHEMANN & ROBERT ROMAN of DECORUM FURNITURE, NORFOLKWhy have you decided to support Hampton Roads Pride for all of these years?Hampton Roads Pride is a great way to engage the com-munity and show how diverse and talented our commu-nity is. Moving the Pride Events to Town Point Park and making it accessible to people from all walks of live was an important mission for us, and we have been very excited to see it grow each year. We also love how our community gathers together and celebrates our diversity. What does Hampton Roads Pride mean to you?Pride, of course, Pride of what our community has ac-complished, how we have been able to pull together and improve rights and recognition for so many people. The community did an amazing job supporting “The right to marry who you love”, and supported each other through the process. There is still a long way to go, and battles to be won, but as a unified community we can get there. Pride means there is a future that is bright for all us. Please share with me one of the most fulfilling moments from your support of HRPride. Living your life open and honestly and supporting others in doing so has been amazing, and HRPride has helped us in doing that. Going with other members of the commu-nity for Lobby Day in Richmond and meeting with mem-bers of the House and Senate to discuss issues and lobby for equal rights has been very important to us. It has also been rewarding to lobby for the rights of same sex couples to adopt children. Standing up against hate and anger is difficult, but you can do it when you have a supporting community surrounding you. Working with open minded politicians and engaging in productive conversations has been amazing, and it has been exciting to see some great individuals elected to Office. We have seen some great improvements for our community, and numerous set back, but when all is said and done, the LGBT community has experienced vast improvements in the last decade. Work-ing together with a unified front we can continue making our community better. The celebration at Decorum when we won marriage equality is a day I will never forget!
OUR PRIDE PARTNERS
SPEAK OUT!LAURA WOOD HABR, CO-OWNER CROC’S 19TH STREET BISTRO, VIRGINIA BEACHWhy have you decided to support Hampton Roads Pride? It was an easy decision to become an Ally supporter and partner of Hampton Roads Pride, which began some 8 years ago upon launching a new event at our restaurant called, Drag Yourself To Brunch while at the same time a new program was emerging via Equality Virginia “Equal-ity Means Business”. We were one of the first Virginia Beach businesses to sign on voluntarily to help protect LGBT Virginians. During that time, I personally began to observe and hear first-hand the challenges and frustra-tions in the LGBT community, including being a recipient of some rather jaw-dropping offensive comments direct-ed to me because our restaurant was hosting a Sunday Brunch featuring Drag Queen entertainment. Additional-ly, I also heard the positive feedback of support from our patrons that our establishment made them feel welcomed to invite their friends and family to celebrate their special occasions as LGBT.Through these influences, it was natural to want to sup-port the work of inclusion, dignity and equality with our local Hampton Roads Pride non-profit and in some small way support our community, patrons, staff and entertain-ers in advocating on their behalf. The volunteers of the Hampton Roads Pride Board of Directors were welcom-ing to me as an Ally Partner by guiding me and our busi-ness how we could be helpful. The work and friendship of Hampton Roads Pride has been inspiring, humbling and deeply valued. Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote sums it up best: “Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home - so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the in-dividual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm, or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without con-certed citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.”

MORE QUOTES FROM PARTNERS“We believe in full inclusion of all people and Hampton Roads Pride shows this as a basis for its purpose. Not only does it provide scholarships and help those in need in the community but it allows us all to get together for a week long set of events that also help to promote all folks in the greater Hampton Roads area.“HR Pride means to us the ability to believe in ourselves and those around us that even though we are not perfect we are all created equal and need to be treated the same. No one I know of asks to be treated better than other—but to be treated with kindness and respect that all folks living in the state of Virginia and North Carolina deserve. HR Pride allows us to show folks we are all the same.”
—JOHNCHILDERS,MJ’STAVERN
The Chrysler Museum of Art is proud to support Hamp-ton Roads Pride as diversity and inclusion is at the core of what we do – through our programs, our collection, our exhibitions and our relationships with all our visitors.
—ERIKH.NEIL,DIRECTOR,CHRYSLERMUSEUMOFART
“So many of us come from other areas and decide to settle down here because of the opportunities that Hampton Roads offers—the landscape, the culture, and the diversi-ty. Hampton Roads Pride is an advocate for those oppor-tunities for all.”
—CHRISTIERUSS,OLDPOINTPRIVATEBANKER
“It is important for those of us in the LGBTQ community to have the opportunity to celebrate who we are with-out fear or judgment while being surrounded in a world of love, acceptance and kindness, even if just for a day or a few hours.”
—JENNIFERGOUDY,AMORTGAGEBANKERATOLDPOINTSAID,
“I have seen the challenges my family and friends have endured over the years fighting for their right for equality. I want to support the organization that protects others from those hardships. Pride holds a special place in my heart for their efforts.”To our organization, Pride means community, Pride means support, Pride means diversity, Pride means love. Hamp-ton Roads Pride has grown into an organization that is meaningful to people and a source of support and educa-tion. Jennifer remembers a time almost 20 years ago gath-ering around a 10’ X 20’ tent at a small community park off of Willow Wood Drive! She said ‘It means so much to me, to see how far we have come. It gives my friends and my family a space in time to feel only LOVE and to be authentically true to ourselves.’ Pride means LOVE……”—GINNELESHONYO,ASSISTANTVICEPRESIDENT,BRANCHMANAGER

Women in the LGBTQ community work tirelessly to live out their beliefs with pride. Regardless of one’s commu-nity- love, unbiased acceptance and healthy relationships are essential attributes to live with pride. Women cannot be expected to hide behind the shadows of others’ an-cient and often misguided perspectives while remaining honest with one’s self throughout this journey. We are however thankful for the many communities who are open, welcoming and affirming. If we are to live with pride then we must embark not just upon a journey of explora-tion but also upon a journey of healing and reconciliation. Living with pride means discovering the opportunities for healing by exploring Core Longings and addressing deep emotional wounds. We believe that Healed Girls Rock.
Don’t just live with pride but live out your life healed, re-stored and self- assured. Practice the art of relaxation, meditation and mindfulness. This is good for the mind. Participate in weekly exercise especially a nice brisk walk through nature. This is good for the body. Become an ac-tive part within a loving community where you can un-apologetically be you. This is good for the soul. Enjoy a full life of expression and welcome the love and warmth of others. As you live with pride you will also find yourself living with love and healing.

JUSSIESMOLLETT
Jussie Smollett, known for his groundbreak-ing role as tortured pop star, Jamal Lyon in the television series Empire, is now emerging beyond what many call one of the most pow-erful characters on television. His release of his album Sum Of My Music on March 2, 2018, is the culmination of years of persever-ance and has delivered him to the present as a singer, songwriter, actor, director, perform-er and activist.Jussie has performed in such hits as The Mighty Ducks, North, Queen, On Our Own, Underground, The Skinny, Alien: Covenant, and Marshall. But for Jussie, music has always been the thing that he came back to regard-less of his schedule or other commitments. “Music has always been my heart. Something I can always and will always create,” he ex-plains. The Empire soundtrack, went to number one on the Billboard charts, was nominated for a Grammy, Billboard ,Emmy and an Ameri-can Music Award. And he’s already received awards for Outstanding New Artist, Out-standing Collaboration with Estelle for “Con-queror,” and Outstanding Song for “You’re So Beautiful.” He has been chosen to perform three times at the Kennedy Center, inducted the great Marvin Gaye into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, sang for the Obamas at the di-rect request of President and Mrs. Obama and opened three sold-out dates for the iconic Mariah Carey in Hawaii. Jussie Smollett is actively involved in numer-ous charities and community organizations. He was recently honored by the Black AIDS Institute, with their “Heroes in the Struggle” award for truly making a difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Smollett now sits on the board of the Black AIDS Institute, San-kofa.org, The Trayvon Martin Foundation, and the RuJohn Foundation, which supplies clothes, school materials and scholarships to children in Jamaica and the U.S. In 2016 he received the prestigious NAACP Chairman’s Award and in 2017 was honored by the AFL/CIO for his activism and using his platform to bring attention to civil rights and social jus-tice causes.
