Annual Meeting 2016 and Singing Lions Performance March 12, 2016

Letter from the President Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends,
Before I even arrived in Norfolk in 2004, I did an Internet search for a Penn State Alumni group in Hampton Roads. It was very important to me to be connected to a group of Nittany Lions in my new home. Now I am most honored to be the newest president of this great group. I plan to build upon the hard work and planning of all our prior officers to keep the chapter growing and being visible in our community.
My goals for 2016 include increasing our membership and planning more activities for young alumni and families. I can‟t take on this mission alone! I need the help of everyone reading this letter. Are you website savvy? Do you love LinkedIn? Were you the one in college organizing the parties and bar tours? Do you have future little Nittany Lions at home? Are you the parent of a current student? Have lots of Penn State pride but no idea what to do with it? If that describes you, your alumni chapter needs and wants you!
As a teacher I know how hectic life can be so another of my goals is to make our chapter more efficient. The board is working together to make communications and meetings more streamlined so we can fit our love of Penn State into our busy lives. If you have the desire to serve, we have a place for you. Come join us!
For the Glory,
Becky Burley, ‟03, President, Hampton Roads Chapter [email protected]

Come show your Penn State pride!
Local PSU Sports Support
(Left) In August, many Penn State alumni and friends met at ODU for the season opener to watch PSU women‟s field hockey face ODU. Since our school colors are the same, it‟s always important to show our PSU pride! Players and their parents were surprised that local alumni turned out to support the team! (Right) We also cheered on the PSU women‟s tennis team at ODU in February. Board member Andrew Ronemus [email protected] watches team schedules and tells us when PSU student athletes are coming to Hampton Roads.

Student Sendoff Picnic
If it‟s the first Sunday in August, then it must be the Student Sendoff Picnic! We welcome new students and their families, as well as returning students, and send them off to PSU in traditional sendoff picnic style. In
Hampton Roads we take advantage of our unique scenery by holding the picnic on the banks of the beautiful Chesapeake Bay at the Paradise Ocean Club (formerly Fort Monroe Officer‟s Club). Picnic committee chair
Fred Cornell and all the committee members did an awesome job coordinating and planning the 2015 picnic. Mark your calendars now to attend the next Student Sendoff Picnic on August 7, 2016.

Fall Football Tailgates and Special Events
We had a full schedule of TV tailgates in 2015. Michael Heckenberger and Sandie Fishbein made plans as soon as kickoff time was announced. Tailgates were held either on the Peninsula or Southside or often both at once. A large crowd appreciated a presentation by PSU Libraries Sports Archivist Paul Dzyak that preceded the Northwestern tailgate at Roger Brown‟s. Becky Burley helped plan what was our second event with the Libraries.
Homecoming
For his first time as Homecoming Parade Chair, Justin Casavant was all in- designing a new float for 2015‟s chapter entry. In previous years we were award-winning pirates; last year, we sailed down College Ave. in our "Day on the Bay" entry! We didn‟t win but have high hopes for “smooth sailing” this year!
Maryland Game
We were successful in getting our top choice in the alumni group football lottery so off we went to M&T Stadium in Baltimore. Some were lucky enough to go up a day in advance to attend the pep rally the night before and take in the sights and restaurants at Baltimore‟s Inner Harbor.

Alumni Admissions Committee Volunteers
It would be impossible for Penn State‟s admissions staff to reach all potential students in Hampton Roads. That‟s where this committee comes in. Part of our mission is to help spread the word about Penn State to potential students. We do that by attending a training session and some or all or even just one of the following: represent PSU at area college fairs on the Peninsula and the Southside, follow-up with admitted students, send students invitations to the picnic, create gift bags and celebrate at the picnic with those who enroll. Contact AAC Chairman Scott Guirlinger on facebook or [email protected] to become a volunteer. (Right) AAC volunteers meet prospective students in Hampton and Va Beach.
How many- 121! That‟s the number of care packages we made
and mailed in April and November 2015 to local students who are attending one of the Penn State campuses. Between shipping and purchasing the contents, it‟s a pricey but important tradition of our chapter.
NEW THIS YEAR! Sponsor a package! In 2016 we have a new opportunity for you to become more
involved. For just $10, you can be an official sponsor of a care package. Your name, graduation date and a personalized message will be included in the box of goodies we send. What better way to support our students and help defray costs! Go to psuhr.org or mail a check and note to

Awards and Honors
In 2015, the chapter received the Alumni Association‟s annual award for New Innovative Event or Program. That event was the Williamsburg Winter Weekend, chaired by Sandie Fishbein. It came with a $500 award and is the only award matched by a $500 donation from a generous alumnus.
For the first time, the chapter was designated an Elm Level (highest Level) group of distinction. Congratulations to all those who helped us to get to the point where, because of all we do for alumni, students and the community, we have been named one of the nation‟s top PSU alumni chapters!
Community Service at the Foodbank
In May, we volunteered at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia to make backpacks containing staples for needy elementary schoolchildren. We made nearly 1,000 for the students to take home on weekends. We also checked and sorted donated food items. According to Penn State alum Renee Figurelle, the Foodbank COO, the backpack items and food we sorted for local food canteens and pantries would make an estimated 5,870 meals.
