MEAC in only allowing teams to convert 31.5 percent of their third downs.

Under Rose and his staff, the Pirates earned four First Team All-MEAC honors. Senior running back LaMarcus Coker was named First Team All-MEAC after becoming the first Pirate since 2006 to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, and his 1,027 rushing yards led the MEAC. Senior punter Jahmal Blanchard also earned First Team All-MEAC honors – for the third straight year – after leading the MEAC with a 43.9 punting average.

Blanchard was also named an SBN Sports Black College All-American for the second straight year, and he was also named to the Associated Press All-American Third Team.

Keeping with Rose’s defensive background, the Pirates’ other two First Team selections were on that side of the ball. Junior linebacker Julio Sanchez earned All-MEAC honors after leading the Pirates with 98 tackles – the second-highest total in the conference. Sanchez had 51 solo tackles in 2009, and he recorded a career-high 16 total stops in an overtime win at Winston-Salem State. Junior defensive lineman Kenrick Ellis was also named First Team All-MEAC, after sitting fifth on the team with 51 tackles and second on the team with 15.0 tackles for loss.

Redshirt-junior defensive lineman Brandon Peguese led the MEAC with 7.5 sacks and 16.0 tackles for loss on the season, earning Second Team All-MEAC honors. Senior linebacker Brandon Roundtree was also named Second Team All-MEAC after sitting second on the team with 73 tackles.

BETHUNE-COOKMAN SEriES: The Pirates lead the all-time series with the Wildcats 9-6, even though Bethune-Cookman has won the last two meetings. The Wildcats beat Hampton 27-24 last season in Daytona Beach, Fla., and in 2008, Bethune-Cookman beat Hampton 17-6 at Armstrong Stadium. Hampton last beat Bethune-Cookman in 2007, 31-24 in Daytona Beach; it was the Pirates’ fourth straight win in the series. Hampton is 4-3 all-time against Bethune-Cookman at Armstrong Stadium. The last time Bethune-Cookman served as Hampton’s Homecoming opponent was in 2004, when the Pirates won 24-17.

A FirST FOr THE PirATES: When Hampton opened the 2010 season on the road on Sept. 2, it did so in historic fashion; the Pirates’ contest against Central Michigan marked the first time in program history that they played against an NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent. Central Michigan beat Hampton at Kelly/Shorts Stadium in Mount Pleasant, Mich. 33-0.

A STrEAK SNAPPED: When the Pirates fell 33-0 to Central Michigan on Sept. 2, it marked the end of an impressive streak for the program. Prior to the loss, Hampton had not been shut out in a game since the 1984 season opener, where the Pirates, then an NCAA Division II program, fell 44-0 to Tennessee State. Since that loss, the Pirates had scored in 281 consecutive games.

DOMiNANT “D”: The Pirates were third in the MEAC in total defense in 2009, only giving up 278.1 yards per game, while also ranking fourth in the conference in scoring defense by only giving up 19.4 points per contest. The Pirates also gave up just 112.6 rushing yards per contest and recorded 28 sacks on the season – both of which ranked second in the MEAC.

This defensive excellence is due in large part to head coach Donovan

Rose’s defensive background, and with so many key pieces returning to the defensive side of the ball this season, the Pirates will look to be even better at stopping the opposition. MEAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Julio Sanchez leads the way at linebacker, coming off a 98-tackle season in 2009, while senior defensive lineman Kenrick Ellis also earned Preseason First Team All-MEAC honors on defense.

Linebacker Brandon Peguese earned Second Team All-MEAC honors last season after leading the conference with 7.5 sacks, success he’ll look to duplicate this season as a Preseason Second Team All-MEAC selection. Safety Ricardo Silva was also named Preseason Second Team All-MEAC, after recording 66 tackles and picking off a pair of passes in 2009.

So far this season, the Pirates are fourth in the MEAC in scoring defense, giving up just 18.2 points per game, while sitting third in total defense after giving up 284.8 yards per contest. Hampton is also third in the conference in rushing defense, only allowing opponents 137.5 yards per game on the ground after holding Old Dominion to just 69 rushing yards this past Saturday.

Ellis, who leads Hampton in tackles with 72, leads the MEAC in tackles per game with 10.3 so far this season. Peguese leads the MEAC in sacks (7.0, 0.88 per game) and is second in the conference in tackles for loss (17.0 for 76 yards). Junior Micah Pellerin leads the MEAC with 14 pass breakups (1.75 per game), while senior Romeo Pellum is third with 11 (1.38 per game).

PirATES rAKiNG iN MEAC HONOrS: Hampton’s five-game winning streak has caught the MEAC’s attention, as the conference has already bestowed seven weekly honors on Pirate players so far this season. After the Pirates defeated Howard 31-21 on Sept. 11, defensive end Kenrick Ellis was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week and kicker Rodrigo Hernandez was named Rookie of the Week. Ellis had a career-high 16 tackles against the Bison, including two sacks and a fumble recovery, while Hernandez was a perfect 4-for-4 in PATs and nailed a 36-yard field goal.

After Hampton blasted North Carolina A&T 35-21 on Sept. 18, quarterback David Legree was named MEAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week and running back Antwon Chisholm was named MEAC Rookie of the Week. Legree passed for a career-high 206 yards and four touchdowns against the Aggies, while Chisholm added 114 rushing yards on just 11 carries – including a 72-yard scoring run.

Chisholm was named MEAC Rookie of the Week again following Hampton’s 20-14 road win over Delaware State, where he rushed for a career-high 157 yards and a touchdown on just 15 carries.

Senior safety Ricardo Silva was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week following Hampton’s 27-13 win over North Carolina Central on Oct. 9. Silva tied for the team high in tackles with 15, including four solo stops, and his 68-yard interception return for a touchdown with two minutes to play helped seal the deal.

Chisholm was yet again named MEAC Rookie of the Week following this past Saturday’s 7-6 win over Norfolk State, after he rushed for 98 yards on 17 carries and accounted for the Pirates’ lone touchdown of the afternoon.

ElliS ON BUCHANAN WATCH liST: Senior defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis is among 20 players selected by The Sports Network to the 2010 Buck Buchanan Award Watch List. Ellis, a First Team All-MEAC selection in 2009, is second

on the team in tackles so far this season with 24, including nine solo efforts, in tackles for loss with 4.0 and in sacks with 2.0. Ellis has also forced and recovered a fumble this season. Ellis had a career-high 16 tackles at Howard, including two sacks, earning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The Buck Buchanan Award, in its 16th season, goes to the nation’s top defensive player at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level. The award will be handed out on Jan. 6, 2011 in Frisco, Texas. Arthur Moats of James Madison won the award last season. Updated watch lists for the Buck Buchanan Award, sponsored by Fathead.com, will be released on Oct. 4 and Oct. 25. Ballots for the award will be distributed to more than 200 voters after the end of the regular season on Nov. 22.

lAST TiME OUT FOr THE PirATES: HAMPTON, Va. (Oct. 30, 2010) -- The Pirates of Hampton University came into the Saturday’s game against new cross-town rival Old Dominion with high hopes, but three blocked punts would change all of that, as the Pirates dropped their first home game of the season 28-14. The Monarchs scored their first 14 points, despite just 17 yards of total offense, after they got the ball on Hampton’s 1-yard line after a bad snap between long snapper Vincent Harper and kicker Jordan Stovall. It would take ODU quarterback Thomas DeMarco two plays to get the first score of the day. On the ensuing play, John Darr would force Lorenzo Shinhoster to fumble the ball on the kickoff and the Monarchs recovered the ball on the Pirates 11-yard line, but the Pirates defense would get into the action with James Butts forced another fumble on the 1-yard line. Special teams would plague the Pirates again after the offense could not get anything going, when Stovall’s punt was blocked by Deron Mayo and recovered by Colby Goodman in the end zone to put the Monarchs up 14-0 early in the first quarter. Hampton’s defense would continue to work hard and keep the Pirates in the game when linebacker Darius Johnson hit Goodman and forced him to fumble the ball on ODU’s 12-yard line. The Pirates would capitalize after running back Antwon Chisholm rushed in from three yards out to give Hampton their first score of the game and make it 14-7 in favor of ODU. ODU’s next score would come from an 11-play, 76-yard drive, when DeMarco rushed in from five yards out to make the score 21-7 to end the first quarter. Hampton would get a third punt blocked late in second quarter, when Desmond

Williams came through the right side and got a piece of Stovell’s kick and he Monarchs took over at Hampton’s 9-yard line. ODU took three plays to score when DeMarco connected with Prentice Gill from nine yards out to make the score 28-7 headed into the half. In the second half, the Pirates defense would hold ODU scoreless, but the Pirates offense just could not get in the end zone. Hampton would score to start the fourth quarter, when Steve Robinson ran in from one yard out to make the score 28-14. The Pirates would get as close as ODU’s 17-yard line when quarterback David Legree was sacked on third down and then fumbled the ball on 4th and 16. Hampton got two more shots following that play at a score, but the first would end in a three-and-out. The Pirates’ final chance would end in an interception with less than a minute to play. “Nothing to say can change how I feel right now,” Pirates coach Donovan Rose said. “You need all three phases to win this game, and we came up short on one today.” The Pirates defense held ODU to 251 yards of total offense and just 69 yards on the ground, as they were led by Brandon Peguese, who had a game-high 14 total tackles and 4.0 tackles for a loss of seven yards. The Pirates offense finished the game with 223 yards of total offense, with 143 yards passing. Both of Hampton’s touchdowns came on the ground.

CHiSHOlM rUNNiNG WilD: Having played in seven of Hampton’s eight games so far this season, freshman running back Antwon Chisholm (Belle Glade, Fla.) is already making his presence felt. Chisholm, a three-time MEAC Rookie of the Week, has racked up 512 rushing yards on 92 carries so far this season, an average of 5.6 yards per carry, while finding the end zone four times. Chisholm’s 73.1 rushing yards per game are sixth-best in the MEAC. Chisholm rushed for a career-high 157 yards on 15 carries in a Sept. 30 win at Delaware State, while he also rushed for 114 yards against North Carolina A&T and 98 yards on Oct. 16 against Norfolk State, accounting for the Pirates’ only touchdown in that contest.

BETHUNE-COOKMAN HEAD COACH BriAN JENKiNS: Bethune-Cookman University has named Ft. Lauderdale, Florida native Brian Jenkins its 10th head football coach. Jenkins was an assistant coach at Rutgers University in the 2009 season.

Jenkins, 38, takes over a Wildcat football program steeped in HBCU tradition.

Jenkins joined the Rutgers University football staff in March of 2009 and he was wide receivers coach on Head Coach Greg Schiano’s Scarlet Knights’ team that was the St. Petersburg Bowl champions with a 45-24 win over the University of Central Florida last Saturday.

Prior to Rutgers, Jenkins served as running backs coach and special team’s coordinator at Louisiana-Lafayette for seven seasons (2002-2008). During the 2005-2007 seasons, the Cajuns rushed for 8,080 yards and 77 touchdowns.

2010 HAMPTON UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL

In 2005, Louisiana rushed for a school-record 2,797 yards and 34 touchdowns. The Cajuns followed with 2,264 yards and 20 scores in 2006. In 2008, the Cajuns broke the school record again, running for 3,019 yards to become the first team in Sun Belt Conference history to ever rush for over 3,000 yards.

Four-time All-Sun Belt running back Tyrell Fenroy was the biggest piece to the Cajuns ground game, amassing over 4,500 career rushing yards via four 1,000-yard seasons under Jenkins’ tutelage. He was the 16th player in NCAA history to have three 1,000-yard seasons as a junior and was the 7th player in NCAA history to post four 1,000-yard seasons.

In 2005, Fenroy became the first running back in school history to ever rush for over 1,000 yards in a season – doing so as a true freshman. A more impressive statistic is that the Cajuns running backs don’t fumble the ball – losing only one fumble the entire 2007 season.

As the special team’s coordinator, Jenkins helped the Cajuns in nearly all facets. In 2007, the Cajuns kickoff coverage defense ranked 20th in the nation, while the punt return defense had the identical ranking in 2004. In 2005, the Cajuns punt return unit ranked 27th nationally.

Jenkins joined UL from the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe. While in Germany, Jenkins’ special teams set several league and team records.

Prior to his stint in NFL-Europe, Jenkins was the running backs coach at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

GOiNG WiTH lEGrEE: David Legree transferred from Syracuse to play for the Pirates in 2009, where he played in nine games in splitting time with fellow signal-caller Herbert Bynes. Legree completed 41.1 percent of his passes (53-for-129) last season for 803 yards, throwing seven touchdown passes compared to two interceptions. Legree was also third on the team in rushing last season, using his speed and athleticism to rush 58 times for 130 yards and a touchdown. In all, Legree averaged 89.2 yards per game in the air last season and 14.4 yards per game on the ground.

Through three games so far this season, Legree has completed 95 of 199 passes (47.7 percent) for 1,062 yards and seven touchdowns. Legree passed for a career-high 206 yards and four touchdowns on Sept. 18 against North Carolina A&T, earning MEAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors – all after a 133-yard, two-touchdown performance on Sept. 11 at Howard.

Legree is tourth in the MEAC in total offense so far this season, averaging 156.0 yards per game.

BUilT FOr SPEED: Speed kills in football – a point the Pirates understand. Hampton is loaded with speed in the backfield and on the edges in terms of the team’s wide receivers, speed which new offensive coordinator Fred Kaiss will hope to use to his advantage as he tries to improve Hampton’s offense from its 19.5 points per game total from a year ago. Among the speedsters in the backfield will be senior Steven Robinson, who was second on the team in rushing last season, as well as local product Dennis Mathis and Iowa State transfer Jeremiah Schwartz.

Not to be outdone, the Pirates receiving core will feature such players as Isaiah Thomas and Reginald Hicks, the top two receivers from 2009. Both are fleet of foot and can open the field whenever they break out of coverage. They’ll be joined by junior Reggie Dixon, who played for the Pirates in 2008, rushing for 55 yards in three attempts.

But Dixon’s speed has been on display elsewhere for the Pirates; for the past two seasons, he has starred on Hampton’s track & field team – where last season, he earned All-American honors in the 100-meter dash after finishing seventh in the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a 10.39. Dixon was also part of the 4x100-meter relay team that qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and in his collegiate track career, Dixon has won three MEAC titles.

rETUrNiNG SUCCESS: In all, Hampton returns 63 letterwinners from last year’s squad, including seven starters on offense and nine starters on defense. With so many starters returning, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, the Pirates come into 2010 expecting big things, despite being picked to finish fourth in the MEAC in the conference’s preseason poll.

The Pirates return two First Team All-MEAC selections from last year, as well as one Second Team All-MEAC selection. Among the returners will be redshirt-senior linebacker Julio Sanchez, who was named the MEAC’s Preseason Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Pirates with 98 tackles last season. Senior defensive lineman Kenrick Ellis was named Preseason All-MEAC First Team, anchoring a defensive line that gave up just 112.6 rushing yards per game last season.

There’s also a fair amount of returning talent on the offensive side of the ball – most notably at quarterback, where both redshirt-junior David Legree and redshirt-senior Herbert Bynes return. Bynes and Legree split time under center last season, after Bynes set all sorts of passing records for the Pirates in 2008. Though the Pirates lose 1,000-yard rusher LaMarcus Coker, they do bring back senior Steven Robinson, who rushed for 510 yards on 92 carries with four touchdowns last season to rank second on the team. The Pirates were second in the MEAC in rushing last season, averaging 117.0 yards per game on the ground.

Also returning are wide receivers Isaiah Thomas and Reginald Hicks, who finished 1-2 on the team in receiving last season. Thomas led the Pirates with 27 receptions for 550 yards – an average of 20.4 yards per catch – and six touchdowns, while Hicks caught 26 balls for 285 yards and three scores. Their speed on the edges will help Legree and Bynes push the ball up the field, particularly if the running game matches last season’s production.

PirATES FACE A TOUGH SlATE: The Pirates face a daunting schedule this season, a slate that includes just four home games. In addition to Hampton’s first-ever game against a Div. I FBS opponent in Central Michigan, the Pirates face road games against Howard (Sept. 11), Delaware State (Sept. 30), North Carolina Central (Oct. 9), two-time defending MEAC champion South Carolina State (Oct. 23), Florida A&M (Nov. 13) and Morgan State (Nov. 20). Hampton will have home games against North Carolina A&T (Sept.

18), Norfolk State (Oct. 16), Old Dominion (Oct. 30) and Bethune-Cookman (Nov. 6). Hampton’s 2010 opponents went a combined 71-54 last season, led by Central Michigan (12-2), South Carolina State (10-2) and Old Dominion (9-2). The Chippewas also won the GMAC Bowl last season, 44-41 over Troy, while South Carolina State went undefeated in the MEAC and qualified for the NCAA Div. I FCS playoffs and ODU set the record for most wins ever in an FCS program’s first season.

PirATES AT HOME: Saturday’s contest against Bethune-Cookman will be Hampton’s fourth and final home game of the season; so far this year, the Pirates are 2-1 at home, having defeated North Carolina A&T 35-21 on Sept. 18 and Norfolk State 7-6 on Oct. 16, before losing this past Saturday 28-14 to Old Dominion at Armstrong Stadium. During his tenure as head coach, Donovan Rose is 5-4 at home.

HAMPTON AGAiNST THE MEAC: The Pirates are 81-32 against schools from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. This is only the Pirates’ 16th year as a member of the MEAC, as they initially became a member back in 1995. Since joining the MEAC, the Pirates have won the conference championship five times, including three straight in 2004, 2005 and 2006. In 2006, the last time the Pirates won the MEAC, Hampton went 10-2, losing only to South Carolina State in the regular season and to New Hampshire in the NCAA playoffs. Prior to joining the MEAC, the Pirates were members of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

Hampton is 4-1 in the MEAC, one game behind Bethune-Cookman in the standings so far this season, having defeated Howard 31-21, North Carolina A&T 35-21, Delaware State 20-14 and Norfolk State 7-6 before falling 10-7 at South Carolina State on Oct. 23. North Carolina Central, though now a member of the MEAC, is not eligible for the MEAC title this season.

The Pirates went 3-5 in MEAC play last season, having defeated North Carolina A&T 24-14 before falling to Delaware State 21-6. They got back in the winning column in the MEAC with a 37-0 win over Howard, before dropping a 46-6 decision to the Norfolk State and falling 21-9 at home to South Carolina State. Hampton suffered yet another close 27-24 loss to Bethune-Cookman, but they bounced back with an impressive 25-0 win over Florida A&M before losing the season finale to Morgan State 16-13.

NEW HirES: The Pirates coaching staff will have a slightly new look in 2010, thanks to a couple key hires from second-year head coach Donovan Rose. Rose brought back Fred Kaiss as the Pirates’ offensive coordinator and promoted Keith Goganious, who coached the linebackers last season, to defensive coordinator. Kaiss originally served as offensive coordinator at Hampton from 2001-06, during the bulk of the program’s success and its run of three straight MEAC titles in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The Pirates offense ranked

in the top 25 in the nation in offense all five seasons under Kaiss, who helped the Pirates produce two 1,000-yard rushers in 2004 and again in 2005.

The Pirates averaged 43.6 points per game on offense in 2004, ranking second in the nation.

Also new to the Pirates coaching staff are quarterbacks coach Shannon Harris, offensive line coach Charles Huff, tight ends/assistant offensive line coach Michael Villagrana and defensive line coach Delbert Cowsette. Huff played for the Pirates from 2002-05, while Cowsette and Villagrana each come from a background of big-time college football. Villagrana played at West Virginia for five years, while Cowsette played at Maryland before embarking on an NFL career that included stops in Washington, New York, Tampa Bay and Chicago.

THE PirATES AT A GlANCE: As Donovan Rose enters his second season as head coach of the Hampton University, his message is simple: it’s time for the program to return to glory.

A resurrection, if you will.

The Pirates went 5-6 in 2009, coming on the heels of back-to-back 6-5 seasons. For a program used to success – including three straight MEAC titles from 2004-06 and five total since joining the conference in 1995 – that has proven unacceptable. The Pirates last made the NCAA playoffs in 2006, and Rose – who has been at Hampton as a player, assistant coach and now head coach – looks to 2010 as the first step toward regaining that success.

“We’re trying to bring the program back to what it had as recently as a few years ago,” Rose said. “There’s so much history and success for us to live up to here, and the other coaches and I take that responsibility seriously.”

The Pirates were picked to finish fourth in the MEAC this season, as South Carolina State was voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors to win its third straight conference crown. But the Pirates do return two First Team All-MEAC selections from last year, as well as one Second Team All-MEAC selection.

Bynes and Legree split time under center last season, after Bynes set all sorts of passing records for the Pirates in 2008. Though the Pirates lose 1,000-yard rusher

LaMarcus Coker, they do bring back senior Steven Robinson, who rushed for 510 yards on 92 carries with four touchdowns last season to rank second on the team.

NEXT GAME: After taking on Bethune-Cookman, the Pirates will take to the road again, traveling to Tallahassee, Fla. to face Florida A&M on Saturday at 3 p.m.

HAMPTON’S HOMECOMiNG HiSTOry: The Pirates are 48-32-2 all-time in Homecoming games, dating all the way back to 1928. Hampton has lost its last three Homecoming games, including a 21-9 defeat to South Carolina State last season. The Pirates’ last Homecoming win came in 2006, when they defeated Winston-Salem State 13-3; that was Hampton’s sixth straight Homecoming win. Hampton has faced Bethune-Cookman in Homecoming four times, going 2-2.
