WELCOMEDear Craft Fair Friends,

If there was a theme to this year’s fair, I’d say it would be ‘express yourself’.

The Waikato Patchworkers and Quilters’ Challenge requires quilters to express their ‘favourite’ things in fabric. Jo Dixey – textile artist and our guest this year expresses social commentary through her embroidered and quilted pieces.

From Australia, we are bringing papercrafter Louise Nelson who is on the international design team for Prima products. She will demonstrate her arty scrapbooking techniques and conduct classes each day – this is a rare opportunity to learn with one of the world’s best.

The Creative Fibre Experience is packed with demos and displays of all things fibre.

There’s a new book to be launched exploring New Zealand’s historic samplers – aptly named ‘New Zealand’s Historic Samplers Our Stitched Stories’.

And to get hands-on learn in the make and take areas covering cardmaking, sashiko, felting and more, plus there are loads of FREE workshops on every day.

And then of course there’s the shopping… exhibitors with all the latest and hard to find products are coming to you from around New Zealand and Australia – don’t miss it.

See you there.

PS. Have you seen our NEW LOOK Into Craft website? You can sign up for your free newsletter to receive projects, patterns and inspiring news about all things craft. Visit www.intocraft.com now!

EMBROIDERY WITH A MODERN TWIST!See this fresh and contemporary stitchery at the fair!

Jo Dixey is a freelance embroiderer and stitch artist who teaches a variety of embroidery techniques and holds design-based workshops. Her works range from large wall quilts to fine

embroideries. They are mostly based on the human form and are often a comment on issues she has with modern life! Her current work has a lot to do with technology and its affect on how we connect with each other.

Jo really enjoys her workshops because of the variety of skill levels she encounters. Some people come along and simply want to reproduce one of her designs while others arrive with their own design and seek her advice on how they’re approaching it. She said she loves teaching all levels, particularly beginners which satisfies her motto of,

August 7 – 10, 2014 9

If you share an interest in the delightful, calm and peaceful activity of embroidery and stitching, come along and see Jo demonstrating her embroidery techniques and enjoy the display of her magnificent work at the fair.

In the meantime here are Jo’s three top tips:

1. Join a stitching group, they are heaps of fun and experienced members have many different skills to share.

2. Practice, practice, practice!

3. Try to finish one project before you start the next, that way you can concentrate on one thing at a time.

With formal training at the Royal School of Needlework, plus City and Guilds creative embroidery Parts 1 and 2, Jo’s work is held in private collections around the world.

You can see her most recent works at the fair.

Fascinating new book will be launched at the fair

‘New Zealand’s Historic Samplers Our Stitched Stories’ by Vivien Caughley is being launched at the fair.

The book is a unique glimpse into our cultural history through more than 80 historic samplers – many specially photographed for the book.

Each sampler has the story of the girl or woman who stitched it and a map shows geographic coverage, from missionary wives in Northland to farmers’ daughters in Southland.

This 176 page hardcover book begins with the Cook Map Sampler and the first stitched map of NZ and finishes with the Embroiderers’ Guilds and the 1990 Globe Theatre project involving 500 embroiderers around NZ.

Vivien is an expert in her field and is happy to identify any old-fashioned samplers brought to the fair.

There is even a design of one of the samplers on the reverse of the jacket together with instructions.

Meet the author, Vivien Caughley at the David Bateman stand, D24 and be one of the first to see the book – the 1853 sampler from the

front cover will also be on display.

Plus hear Vivien’s free daily presentation about this wonderful book at 11am each day in Workshop 1.
