Message from the Chair
The success of the MS Society and the Hamilton Chapter has and
always will be a team effort. Uniting our team is the common
purpose of finding a cure to end multiple sclerosis. Part of
succeeding as a team is recognizing the strength that each player
brings to the whole.
In 2011, our team, comprised of our members, volunteers, staff
and donors worked hard to ensure our continued success in
helping people with MS through client support, advocacy,
education and wellness programs and by fundraising through solid
planning, diversifying revenue streams and donor stewardship.
However, the economic downturn that began in 2008 is still having
a dramatic financial effect on the Society, both in Canada as a
whole and here at the Hamilton Chapter. We have and will
continue to act in a fiscally prudent and responsible manner –
striving to do more with less while undertaking innovative
solutions to deliver support services and address fundraising
challenges.
The unparalleled increased in community awareness of MS
associated with chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI)
has propelled our research towards new paths of discovery.
Although CCSVI has caused great debate among our members, we
all agree the end goal is the same – endMS. We are stronger
together, more united in our resolve to fulfill as many areas of
need as we can, while continuing to explore all new theories which
may lead to a cure to end MS today!
As we celebrate the strength of our chapter and the progress
toward our mission in 2011, we express our unending gratitude
and thanks to all the people who have so generously given of their
time and financial resources in the fight to end this disease.
Sincerely,
Wendy Taylor
Chair
Client Services
Addressing the daily challenges of everyone living with MS is the
focus of the Hamilton Chapter’s work. In addition to our core
services we continue to evolve in response to clients’ needs in
increasingly personalized ways.
For a person living with MS the road to wellness involves more than treatment of the disease. Equally important are health promotion strategies, social interaction, fulfilling work and leisure activities and attention to one’s inner self.
Family members and caregivers also need to pay attention to their own health and well-being. In order to offer the best possible care and support to someone else, it is important to make sure that one’s own needs are being addressed. In 2011, the Hamilton Chapter addresses these issues in many ways:
Provision of Information and Referral: We provided support and
information to 914 individuals.
Self help and Support Groups: There are 6 support groups that
meet monthly serving over 60 people.
Equipment and Special Assistance Funding: 129 people received
assistance for urgent needs such as: mobility equipment, ramps,
cooling units, life lines, home maintenance, respite care, and
transportation.
Health and Wellness: 16 members attended weekly Yoga
classes and 51 children were helped to attend a week long day
camp program of their choice. 10 members benefited from a
new partnership with the St. Elizabeth Health Care Foundation
who participated in a 6 session workshop called Building Bridges
to Better Health.
Public Education: 5 educational sessions provided new learning
opportunities for over 395 people on topics ranging from tax
savings, accessible travel, CCSVI and navigating the MS maze.
Professional Education: 5 MS education sessions were provided
to over 70 health care professionals
CCSVI Stories of Hope
Over 100 people attended this
informative education session
where 4 members shared their
stories of hope after travelling
out of country for Chronic Cere-
brospinal Venous Insufficiency
(CCSVI) treatment. Participant
feedback was universally positive
expressing pleasure in having the
opportunity to hear directly from
individuals who had undergone
treatment while rating the
presentation as very informative
and very useful.

Marshaling our Resources to Advance MS Research on all Fronts
Opportunities to support MS research abound and the Hamilton community rose to the challenge. Donors pledged participants in our national events – MS Walks, Rona Bike Tours
and Global Dinner, contributed to national research campaigns through direct marketing and directed fundraising efforts toward the National MS Research fund. It is important to
know that all these donations are in addition to the contribution that the Chapter makes through both research and revenue sharing transfers. Over the past five years on behalf
of donors, Hamilton Chapter has contributed over $480,000 to fund ground breaking research in promising areas such as CCSVI and genetics which directly influences the services
for all those touched by the disease.
Our Mission
To be a leader in finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis and enabling people affected by MS to enhance their quality of life.
