2. Laban Korir
30 June 1985
Kenya
2:06:05
Korir, who rightly describes his marathon debut as the best achievement of his career so far,
went to number three on the all-time charts for debutants when he finished second in
Amsterdam in 2011. His has been a natural transition on the road, concentrating on 10km
and the half marathon for his first international appearances since 2008. Going into the
Amsterdam race with a half marathon best of 61:03 for sixth in the Berlin Half Marathon
earlier in 2011, he was primed for a good performance yet the marathon can be a cruel
teacher – Korir passed the test with high credit.

3. Eric Ndiema
28 December 1992
Kenya
2:06:07
Eric Ndiema started running in Primary School where he reached the 10.000m final at the
National School Championships. After he graduated he moved to Iten where his friends were
training. He began his international career in 2009 and ran his first marathon in 2011. He
started Amsterdam marathon as a pacemaker but as he felt very strong he decided to finish.
Eric started his preparation for Hamburg in Kitale, where his family lives because his wife
gave birth to a beautiful daughter. In March, he moved to Iten to train with his training
mates including John Kiprotich, Patrick Terer and Simon Cheprot. Eric was inspired by Shem
Kororia when Eric was only five years old. He saw him training for the World half marathon
championships. After Shem Kororia won these championships and the whole village was
celebrating, Eric decided that one day he would like to be a top athlete like Shem.

Silas Kipruto started seriously training after completing the Secondary School which resulted
in his first international competition in 2007. After running some track races, Silas moved to
the half marathon distance in 2009. He was honoured to represent Kenya at the 2010 World
Half Marathon Championships where he took the fourth place. This year he decided to make
his marathon debut and he hopes that this new adventure will give him the same
satisfaction as he has on the track and in the half marathon. Silas trains in Iten with athletes
like Gilbert Kirwa and Nicholas Kemboi.

9. Lucas Rotich
16 April 1990
Kenya
debut (PB half 59:44)
Lucas was born in Kapsoiya (about 25km from Iten) and grew up in a family with 7 children.
When Lucas ran his final School-Championships in 2007 his father took two days off from
work and travelled 200km to see his son competing. He is Lucas biggest fan but also his
biggest critics as his father believes that only position one is good enough. It took Lucas
some time to explain his father that the difference between school sports in Kenya and the
world-class meetings in Europe is huge and that he would need time to close the gap. When
he went out to Europe in 2008 he ran decent times on 3000m and 5000m (position 1 and 6
on the World Junior Lists) but his father wasn’t happy about the positions he acquired.
In 2012 Lucas missed the Olympics by finishing 6th during the Kenyan trials which made him
decide to change to the roads. However a knee-injury, which lead to surgery in October
2013, has stopped him from showing his skilled so far. Currently training with marathon-
greats Emmanuel Mutai, Eliud Kipchoge, Bernard Koech, Mike and Bernard Kipyego brought
him almost back to old levels. Good enough to make his debut in the marathon of Hamburg.

Philemon surprised many by winning the Kenyan cross country trials February 2013. It meant
for him his first appearance in the Kenyan vest at the world cross championships. After the
World Championships he started his marathon career by pacing the men’s race in Rotterdam
where he did a good job. He continued his pacing job in Berlin where he paced till 32km in
the world record race, which gave him confidence for his marathon debut. Philemon Rono is
a training partner of course record holder Eliud Kipchoge.

William started marathon running in 2003 when he made his debut in Paris, in the same year
he showed his marathon potential by winning Amsterdam Marathon in remarkable time of
2.06. It took him however a couple of marathons and 5 years to improve on his personal best
which he did while winning the Rotterdam Marathon in 2008 in a 2.05 time. William won

14. Yuki Kawauchi
05 March 1987
Japan
2:08:14
Yuki Kawauchi is the leading Japanese marathoner of his time and one of the sport’s great
individuals. Kawauchi exploded onto the scene as a 23-year-old self-coached amateur in
2011, running 2:08:37 for 3rd at the Tokyo Marathon while working full-time in the office of
a suburban high school, a complete outsider to Japan’s rigid corporate running team system.
His emotional performance in Tokyo won him fans across the country, and since then his
exploits have earned him fame around the world. On a mission to test the limits of what is
possible, he has set world records for the least time ever between sub-2:09 and sub-2:10
marathons, and in 2013 ran faster than 2:10 four times, a feat never before accomplished.
All the time he has remained self-coached and continued to work full-time at his high school
office, refusing sponsorship offers and National Federation support grants in the name of his
ideals of amateurism, of inspiring people around the world not to give up on their dreams,
and of showing young people that they have options for their future if they believe in
themselves and do what they think is right, that blindly following the system is not the only
choice.

21. Markus Weiss-Latzko
6 July 1984
Germany
2:18:06
As a 11-year old boy, Markus started running and soon realized he felt most comfortable
running longer distances. The fact that the atmosphere at marathon events is so incredible
exciting and intense made it easy for him to move to marathon. Since he moved to the
marathon, he made a very steady progress. Now his focus is on Hamburg and on improving
his PB, but he also keeps an eye on the qualifying mark for the European Championships. But
in the end, if he can say after the race that he has given everything during the race, he will
be satisfied. As he really improved a lot last winter, he might continue until the Rio Olympics
in 2016 or the European Championships in Berlin in 2018. Although it will be tough to qualify
for those events, Markus says “you need to have dreams and be a bit crazy about your
passion if you really want to make it”.
As a formed Law student, Markus is now working on his PhD and he will start working in a
law firm soon.

2:25:09
Dinknesh, which means “wondrous one” in Amharic, grew up in the town of Bekoji, the
renowned “Town of Runners”. As a young athlete she was brought to Addis Ababa by the
organization ‘Running Across Borders’ and given coaching, accommodation and support to
pursue a running career. She was the first to be part of the program and a classic example of
what they are trying to do in East Africa: use sport to help youth achieve success in life. In
2010, Mekash traveled outside of her country for the first time, flying to Scotland to
participate in the Loch Ness Marathon. She won in 2:46:39. She was surprised by seeing
radiators used for heating the home. The arrival of the mail each day also caught her
attention. She was inspired by her niece Elfenesh Alemu (4th in 2004 Olympic marathon,
2003 Tokyo winner) in the beginning of her running career. Tiki Gelana has been an
inspiration for her as well, who is her training partner in the group of Getaneh Tessema.

F7. Ogla Kimayo
27 July 1988
Kenya
2:36:57
Ogla ran a few marathons in her career, most of them in South America. She made some
progress in every marathon she ran. She finished her last marathon in 2:36, which still stands
as her personal best. But her personal best in the half marathon indicates that she can run
faster than that. Hamburg marathon will be her first marathon in Europe where the weather
conditions are much better than in South America. So Ogla will definitely aim to break her
personal best in Hamburg.
