What can I say and where do I start? How aboutAMAZING! If you haven’t yet heard of or seen YG’s newestboy group WINNER, where have you been? A little historyon the group, WINNER started out as Team A, a fivemember group consisting of Seungyoon, Jinwoo,Seunghoon, Minho and Taehyun on YG’s reality show WIN:Who Is Next to pick out his next group to debut. Theycompeted on the show against Team B a six member groupwho had been training with the members of Team A. Overseveral weeks both teams showed what they could do withtheir dancing, singing and composing skills. In the end,Team A won after fans voted on which group they wantedto see debut. After winning that show, WINNER TV wasborn giving fans an inside look at the members in varioussituations and a chance to see their personalities come tolight. Before they even made their debut they began building upa fan base. They went to Japan with Big Bang on their tourand opened up for them. They also went on tour with 2ne1and opened for them and were put on the tour of the YGFamily.Fans were anxiously waiting for WINNER to debut and afterseveral delays and months of waiting, WINNER finallymade their debut in mid August. They started with aLaunch show on August 6th, followed by the on line releaseof their album on August 12th along with not one, but twoMV’s, released on August 14th.One week later WINNER appeared on MCountdown and“Empty” and “Color Ring”. Their physical album wastook first place. An amazing feat for a rookie group. Theythen won first place on Music Bank and as if that were notenough, WINNER’s debut album ranked #1 on Billboard’sWorld Album Chart. If I had to make a prediction, I would say they are well ontheir way to super stardom. Monster Rookies indeed!

Looking back after the show, I can say that eve-rything about it was beyond expectation. It will be remembered as one of the most successful YG FAMILY concerts by many YG fans.

The concert was scheduled to start off at 6:30 pm but the fans started to gather around the stage much more early in the day. Before the show started, various music videos of the YG artists were displayed on the large screen and fans en-joyed watching them with anticipation.

2NE1 was the first to kick off the grand yg fam-ily concert. Their first song was “Crush”. They came down to the stage from the ceiling, being seated in a large shiny silver bench which was in harmony with their shiny silver outfit. The way how they made their grand entrance, their sassy stage attitude, the flamboyant outfits, and the sassy vibe of the song all made them look like a “queen” of the stage. Fans went crazy as 2ne1 came out to the front stage and then 2ne1’s de-but song, “Fire” was performed. All the fans sang a long in a loud voice and also danced along by shaking their bodies. To the enthusiastic fans, 2ne1 sent out their greetings. Fans responded to it with a loud scream and cheer.

The youngest of the YG Family, Akdong Musi-cian’s stage was very cute and friendly. Whenever they spoke to the fans, they said it in a very cute and adorable way that made their fans smile. They performed their two hit singles, “200%” and “Give Love”. This time also, all the fans sang along to the sweet melody and lyrics of those two lovely siblings. They also wore a matching outfit in white & black which was adorable.

Another young member of the family, Lee hi also gave a great performance to the audience. Wear-ing a cute skirt and heels, she performed “1,2,3,4” and “rose”. Especially for “1,2,3,4” , the stage rec-

-reated the same visual effect that was shown in the “1,2,3,4” music video which was interest-ing. Regarding “rose”, it was a great performance which showed off her talented vocal skills. Also the performance of the back-up dancers was impressive as well since their choreography and stage acting was really subtle and beautiful.

YG’s new boy group, “WINNER”’s entrance made fans go wild. All the winner fans started to shook their official winner cheering stick which lighted up in blue color. Winner performed their title song, ‘Empty’, and has officially debuted through this concert since it was their first time perform-ing it in stage since their album was released on-line on 8/12. Even though they are just a rookie, they already have a huge fandom so there were lot of winner fans who sang a long “empty.” They also performed “smile again” which was com-posed by their members during the competition verses Team B, a current trainees at YG in a real-ity show program “WIN : Who Is Next.”

Winner also had a small fan event which was bowing to their fans as a gesture of gratitude. This was to appreciate their fans love and support for their new debut album which produced mul-tiple chart-toppers including chart no.1 which is “empty”.

Bigbang opened their stage performing “Bad boy”. They all wore shiny gold outfits which matched their official cheering stick that their fans were shaking frantically which lights up in yellow. The crowd sang a long and screamed whenever the members came closer to the fans. Then Bigbang performed “Fantastic Baby” at the main front stage. The fun upbeat song and the passionate dance moves of the members made fans go wild, making the whole concert scene in to a party house. As the King of k-pop and the main headliner of YG Family, the crowd enjoyed

their performance a lot.

Then it was Psy. As the king of performance and concert, he captivated the crowd with his funny personality, pas-sionate performance, and awesome stage manner. He kept demanded the crowd to jump and go crazy with him. He did not let the crowd feel bored for even a second. He kept the crowd go and go with him throughout his whole performance. He did “Father”, “Gentleman,” and “Right now”. When he performed “father”, there was a second he passed the mic to the audiences and it was really amazing to see the crowd singing the song without forgetting any lyrics. When he performed “Right now”, during the per-formance quite a lot of amount of water was poured into the crowd standing in the front row of the stage which was a fun surprise to everyone.

Since it was a joint YG FAMILY Concert, of course there were a lot of joint performances besides the artists’ indi-vidual performances. Lee hi joined 2NE1 to sing 2ne1’s song “If I were you”, showing off her vocal skills and a harmony with the 2NE1 members. T.O.P also performed his song “Doom Dada” with Winner’s Minho and 2NE1’s Dara. Seung-ri also showed fans a fun stage where he imitated g dragon’s appearance and did a performance together with g dragon for “Crayon”. All members of big-bang also amused their fans when they did a sexy male version of 2NE1’s “I love you”. Their sexy expression and moves made the fans go wild. Also Winner’s rappers : Minho and Seung-Hoon did a joint performance with Team B’s Bobby and B.I, performing “phone number”, a song of one of their old YG Family members, Jinu-sean. Bigbang’s Dae-sung also did a joint rock version perfor-mance of 2NE1’s ‘ugly’ with winner’s seung-yoon. Also g-dragon did a male version of CL’s ‘baddest female’, chang-ing the lyric “female” to “male” while he sang it. Taeyang also did a English version of “eyes, nose, lips” with Epik high’s Tablo. In the end, as a encore, all of the YG FAMILY artists came out on stage and sang Psy’s “gangnam style”, Bigbang’s ‘fantastic baby”, and 2ne1’s ‘go away’ together.

KCON 2014, 2 Nights in LA, took place Au-gust 9-10 and this year seemed to be

bigger than the rest. This year’s KCON didn’t just have a two day convention, but also two jam packed concerts with five artists and/or groups each night. Having gone to both KCONs so far, I had high hopes that this year’s con would be able to top each of my other experiences. I was not disappointed to say the least.Convention and concert goers started lining up as early as 3am on Saturday morning keeping themselves busy with their friends, but also making friends with those that surrounded them. After personally arriving at the venue at 6:30am, already over 500-700 KCON goers were in line and over the two day convention, over 42,000 made their way to the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena to take part in this year’s festivities. MNET brought huge names to this year’s KCON with repeat appearances from VIXX, Teen Top, and G Dragon, and first time KCONers Girls Generation (SNSD), B1A4, CN Blue, Jung Joon Young, IU, SPICA and one of the biggest rookie groups out right now, BTS (Bangtan Boys), however, the guest list didn’t stop there. There were special guest appear-ances from Yoo In Na, Lee Seo Jin, Eric Nam, Rainbow’s very own Jaekyung, Kim Ji-Seok and non-other than Lee Seung Gi himself. The convention itself had hundreds of vendors partici-pating including numerous food trucks, websites, and fan clubs being represented all over the con. In the market place area there was also an outdoor stage where perfor-mances and their very own SuperStar KCON competi-tion took place. Performers like DanAkaDan, Shin-B and Jun Curry Ahn (who also took the big stage as an opener for Saturday night’s concert) took the stage and rocked it.

Continuing with the theme of bringing KPOP’s biggest idols closer to their fans, both days were filled with art-ist engagements not only through meet and greets held by KCON, but on the MNET outdoor stage with Dan-ny From LA (DFLA) hosted by Danny Im and Dumb-founded (aka Parker). Saturday started with a fan meet and greet with VIXX, followed by Teen Top, IU, and B1A4. Each meet and greet consisted of a group of fans receiving autographs from their idols followed by an-other group being able to hi touch their idols.Sunday’s artist engagements included BTS, Jung Joon Young, SPICA and the final panel was dedicated to some of our favorite Korean actors Lee Seung Gi, Kim Ji-Seok and Lee Seo Jin. This year’s KCON was the first to have any actors present for activities at the con. Lee Seung Gi was a special guest at the Girls Education booth that promoted schools for girls whereas the beautiful Ms. Yoo In Na made an appearance at Get It Beauty booth dedicated to showing thoseinterested in how to do some of the most popular looks of idols as well as every day beauty techniques. After waiting in, what felt like, 100degree weather heat, I was able to meet Eric Nam who was present at the Viki booth. Fans that were able to get through the line were allowed to take “selfies” with Eric, who was one of the sweetest people in the world. Even from afar you could see the smile plastered on his face and he made sure to make every fan feel special. Two artist engagements I was able to attend were for BTS and SPICA. I was only a part of the audience for BTS but seeing the boys so excited to perform that night made me even more anxious to finally see them live on stage. Rap Monster spoke nearly fluent English and to keep the audience entertained, Jimin and J Hope con-tinued to dance around and made all the girls scream.SPICA had just released their first English single, “I Did It” and were to perform the song live on stage that night. They expressed their excitement not just to per-form “I Did It” on stage live, but it would be their first major stage appearance in the States. They expressed how nervous they were, but also, how excited they were to see so many American fans waiting for them. I was able to do the hi touch this time and each member of SPICA were so friendly and made sure to say hello in-dividually to all the fans that came up on stage with a smile on their face.

What would be more epic then ending a HALLYU filled day then with a MNET Countdown concert? Each night held a 3 hour concert of nonstop adrena-line and music.VIXX opened up the show on Saturday, followed by IU, Teen Top, B1A4 and G Dragon finished off the fun filled night of music. With all of the male performers of the night veterans to the performing on American soil, it was the first time for IU to perform in the States and she held her own capturing all the hearts of the fan boys in the audience.BTS opened up the show on Sunday followed by Jung Joon Young, SPICA, CN Blue, and the show closer of the night was none other than SNSD. The crowd went CRAZY as they were announced, and there was no doubt that they were the show stealers of the night.I could go on and on about the concerts and how awe-some each and every one of the artists rocked but then I would never shut up.I’m ready for KCON 2015! Are you?

KCON 2014 went from a one day event to a two day event, with two concerts both with different idols each night.HALLYU Magazine was invited to the Day 2 Red Carpet. There was no press conference this year so interviewswere conducted on the Red Carpet with Eric Nam.Unfortunately we did not know in advance that there wouldbe interviews therefore we were not able to video any ofthem. On August 10th, the day HALLYU attended we were able to see Lee Seungi, Girl’s Generation, BTS, CNBlue, SPI-CA and actor Lee Seo Jin.In order to actually attend the Red Carpet arrivals, fans hadto win their way in by opportunity scratchers given to themas they checked in at KCON. Though there were manywho were disappointed that they didn’t win, those that didattend were excited and enthusiastic at the chance to seesome of their favorite idols, and a great opportunity for them to be able to take photos and create lasting memories. Eric Nam was a great host for this event keeping the fansentertained and not one to disappoint, once the Red Carpetwas over he made sure to take the time to walk over to thecrowd shaking hands and taking photos with some of thoselucky enough to be up front.KCON organizers did a great job this year and we arelooking forward to KCON 2015.

On August 9th and 10th KCON 2014 took place in Los Angeles, CA. This was KCON’s third year of the biggest Hallyu event to take place in California. This year HALLYU Magazine was invited to sit on three discussion panels. As his was my first time ever do-ing a panel, I was not sure what to expect. My first panel was entitled “Hallyu in Media” and though I was a little intimidated in the beginning I can say it turned out to be a great experience. Also on the pan-el were journalist members from outlets such as 247 Asian Media, KPopstarz, Koreaboo and Billboard Magazine. Each of us brought something different to the table explaning how each of our outlets deals with the Hallyu experience and KPop and what we bring to our readers.Panel two was a discussion on Rookie Groups and who each of us thought had potential to “make it” in the KPop world and why. The panel consisted of representatives from JAPAKO Music, TGM Events, a youtube vlogger, and moderator Johnny Au of theaureview. My part in the discussion was on both GOT7 and WINNER, two groups I not only follow but who I see as going far in the music industry be-cause of their appeal to fans, their marketing value and most importantly their talent. My third panel was perhaps the most fun of the three and was also attended by one of HALLYU Magazine’s newest writers, Julie Thai. This panel was entitled “Fan Etiquette: How To Be A Classy KPop Fan”. Be-sides Julie and myself, the panel consisted of a repre-sentative from Green Tea Graffiti, SOOMPI, and two youtube reactioners. Our discussion focused on the do’s and don’ts of being a KPop fan. We were really pleased when feedback was received from a KCON attendee who had been at our panel and advised that she learned alot and really enjoyed what we all had to offer.I can honestly say that not only was this year’s KCON was the best one so far, it was not only a fun experi-ence but a learning experience as well.
