Origin• Halloween can be traced back to the ancient

religion of the Celtics in Ireland.

• They used to have Samhain which was a festival to celebrate the end of the Celtic year.

• They built fires on the hills to welcome the souls of the dead back to their homes.

When? Where? How? • Halloween is celebrated on 31st October.

• It is celebrated all over the world – Great Britain, United States, Mexico, Canada.

• Some people decorate their homes, dress up in a costume, go to parties and children play trick-or-treat.

Pumpkins & Jack-o’-Lanterns

• Pumpkins are the symbol of Halloween.

• We remove the inside of the pumpkin and cut out the eyes, nose and mouth to make jack-o'-lanterns.

• They were originally created to scare off evil spirits!

• People make them scary...

• Others make them funny...

Trick-Or-Treat?• Children like to dress up on Halloween.

• They go from house to house knocking on people‘s doors and asking them “Trick or Treat?”

• Normally, people give them a treat such as sweets or money so a trick is not played on the owner of the house.

• It's not only children that like to dress up!• A lot of people have Halloween parties and

the guests normally wear costumes.

• Apple bobbing is a popular activity on Halloween.

• They use apples to remind us that it is the time of harvest.

• Apples are put in a big bowl of water and you have to try and pick one up with your teeth.

Halloween superstitions• If a candle goes out by itself, a ghost has entered

the room.

• You can see your future if you stare into a flame.

• If you see a spider, people believe it is the spirit of a dead loved one watching you.

• If you want to meet a witch, you must wear your clothes inside out and walk backwards.
