Known as “Big Wilbur” at Thayer, or just Will, he was a physical force in football and hockey for four years; he also played baseball for two years and track as a senior. As co-captain of a young football team with a difficult schedule against several teams having postgraduate players, Will faced a challenging task. He played inside linebacker and his potential as an offensive center was obvious to all. In addition to size and strength, he possessed quickness and agility. He was, as a senior, an important defenseman on a very good hockey team that was “probably the finest in Thayer’s history” to that time.

Will was recruited by B.c. for both sports, but elected to attend mil-ford Academy where he played on a nationally ranked football team. After one year at Idaho State, he transferred to the University of Kentucky for a more competitive league. At the end of the 1977 season, he was drafted by the nFL’s Buffalo Bills. He played nine years at offensive center for Buffalo, and was recognized in 1980-81 as All League and a member of the offensive line which allowed the fewest sacks that year. He completed his football career with a year at Seattle.

After professional football, Will worked for Bethlehem Steel com-pany for six years as a supervisor. He then returned to coach at Buffalo State college and Alfred State.

Today, Will lives in the Buffalo area with his wife, Jean, and is father to Jason (25) and Britney (19). He maintains contact with friends, es-pecially from the “fraternity” of offensive linemen and coaches from his football career.

greg was a three sport team captain, a high school & college All American, an outstanding leader at Thayer Academy, Suffield Academy (as a post graduate) and Springfield college. As a Thayer Academy football player greg was a three time varsity letter winner and the winner of the Stadfeld Award his senior year. greg was a starting defensive back as a junior and platooned in as quarterback. In greg’s post graduate year at Suffield Academy he was the starting quarterback.

greg’s most impressive sport was wrestling. As a four year varsity letter winner greg placed 3rd or higher in every tournament he participated in his four years at Thayer and his Pg year at Suffield. As a freshman he placed 3rd in the league tournament, as a sophomore he again placed 3rd in the league tournament and went on to a surprising finish of 3rd in the new Eng-land Prep School Tournament. In greg’s junior year he was 1st in league tournament and placed 3rd in the national Prep School Tournament to earn high school All-American honors. In his post graduate year he was a connecticut State Private School and new England Prep School champion as well as a key leader on the con-necticut State championship team. In college as a freshman greg placed 3rd in the Eastern re-gion Division II championships, was a member of the championship team, and was a qualifier for the ncAA Division II championships. As a junior greg placed first in the Eastern region cham-pionships and was again a key contributor to help his team win another team championship.

He once again qualified for the ncAA Division II ncAA championships. In greg’s senior year he was elected team captain, won the Eastern region championships, and went on to become an ncAA Division II All-American by placing 7th in the tournament.

greg was also a three time varsity letter win-ner as a track and field athlete. He was a “go to” athlete for coach Sawyer and coach Adams all of those years. greg was often called on to run in multiple and different events as well as in his specific role as a hurdle specialist. In that roll greg is still the school record holder in the 300 yard low hurdles and had the second best time in the league his senior year in the 120 yard hurdles to his teammate Jim mahoney ’77 who was a new England champion. greg is a mem-ber of the 1977 Hall of Fame new England class B Track and Field championship team and was a new England relay champion as well in his senior year.

greg participated in rugby in college and con-tinued to play after he graduated for the Provi-dence city team for several years. greg also coached the Suffield Academy wrestling team for several years upon graduation from Spring-field college and led them to a connecticut State Prep championship,

greg is currently a member of the John Han-cock company, father to nicolas, Evan, Emma and Davis and happily married to nancy, his wife of over twenty years.

1986 VarsitY BoYs’ hocKeYThe 1986 & 1987 Boys’ Varsity Hockey teams were exceptionally talented.

The ’86 team finished with a 28–3 record. They were ISL co champs and new England class A champs. The following season the Tigers dominated their rivals with an outstand-ing record of 24–2. Again they were new England class A champs, but came in second in the ISL with a league record of 12–2. The sensational forward line of Jeremy roenick ’88, Tony Amonte ’89, and Dan green’89 scored more points than any other in the ISL.

Joseph J. cappellano iiiclass of 1982 hocKeY | footBall

Joseph cappellano was a two-sport star at Thayer. A three-year starter in football, Joe was a bruising fullback and middle linebacker. He captained the team in 1981 his senior season, leading the Tigers to an undefeated season and capturing the ISL championship. He was named All-ISL that year. Though outstanding on the gridiron, Joe’s main sport was hockey. A five-year varsity player for coach Arthur Valicenti, Joe was a physical right-winger, and was the team’s leading scorer for three seasons. According to coach Valicenti, “Joe was a strong, powerful forward and easy to coach. He was as good defensively as he was offensively”. That is saying something as Joe amassed huge numbers offensively, including 16 goals-17 assists for 33 points as a freshman, 27-30-57 as a sophomore, 34-22-56 as a junior and 20-29-49 as a senior. This statistic, combined with his 8th grade year numbers put him well over the 200 point mark for his career. Joe was a three-time All-ISL Keller honoree. His senior year Joe won the ISL Flood Shield Award, given to the ISL hockey player “whose enthusiasm for hockey and true devotion to the game is marked by his playing ability and physical toughness, yet whose competitive spirit is balanced by emotional control and a real desire to play within the rules of the game”.

At graduation, he received the gilbert Booth Award for outstanding sportsmanship.Joe went on to play for coach Jack Parker at Boston University, skating a regular shift as a freshman. His sophomore year, Joe tallied 10 goals and 24 assists for the Terriers. Unfortunately, Joe suffered a career-ending ankle injury during his junior season.

Joe is a Senior Account manager and a 20 year employee of The newark group in cranford, nJ. He currently lives in Downingtown, Pennsylvania with his wife, Paddy (Duggan), ’84 and their two daughters, maggee and madison.

The existing Tiger’s Den will be converted into a new, supervised, multi-use gathering space for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.

This space will include academic lockers, tables with informal seating, a snack bar, and a campus Store relocated from its current location on the second floor of the Sawyer Athletic center.

Dan Digravio excelled on the football field, basketball court, and baseball diamond throughout his four-year career at Thayer Academy. In football, under coach Arthur Valicenti, he was a four-year letter winner, three year starter, member of two ISL championship teams, a two-time first team ISL All-League selection at quarterback, a two-time Patriot Ledger All Scholastic, Boston globe All Scholastic as a senior, selected as the Independent School League’s most Valuable Player his senior season, and was selected to play in the 9th Annual Shriners H.S. Football classic. As a senior he was elected captain and earned the team’s most Valuable Back as the quarterback on an undefeated ISL championship team (7-0). Dan established many of Thayer’s single season and career passing records throughout his outstanding career.

Dan was a four-year letter winner on the varsity basketball team under coach Jim rehnquist. He was a starting member of the 1986 undefeated team that went 23-0, winning both the ISL Title and the new England class c championship. Senior year he returned to the new England championship game and earned ISL All-League honors as a forward.

Dan also played four years of varsity baseball for coach Don Badger. He earned the teams most Improved Player award and ISL Honorable mention as a junior. Senior year, he was selected to the ISL All-League team and voted the team’s most Valuable Player. Dan was a three year member of the Varsity club and he received the Varsity club Award his senior year as Thayer’s most “Outstanding male Athlete” at commencement.

Dan earned a full scholarship to The University of maine where he was a four-year letter winner. Dan coached high school football, basketball and baseball after college for several years. He currently lives in Plymouth with his wife, Kristen, and two children Will and caroline. Dan is the Sales manager at Weber Dodge in Hingham.

Laura came to Thayer in her junior year and dominated in three sports from beginning to end. She lettered in soccer, basketball and lacrosse her junior and senior years and earned many awards for each sport. As a soccer player, Laura earned All-ISL and All-new England honors in 2001 and 2002 and was elected as a captain her senior year. On the basketball court, Laura’s successes were equally impressive – earning All-ISL honors in 2001 and 2002 and All-new England hon-ors in 2002. She was also voted captain as a senior. As much success as Laura had as a soccer and basketball player – it was on the lacrosse field where she shined most. In 2001, her team was crowned ISL champi-ons and Laura took home All-ISL honors as well. In her senior year, Laura racked up the lacrosse awards – she was All-ISL, All-new England, a Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic, a new England Prep School Lacrosse Asso-ciation All Star and, most importantly, Laura received the highest honor of being picked as a First Team All-American.

It is not a surprise that Laura continued her lacrosse successes at national powerhouse northwestern University – ultimately winning two Division 1 national championships in 2005 and 2006. Laura’s individual honors at northwestern run deep. As a freshman she started in 15 of 16 games – earning

her ALc (American Lacrosse conference) All conference and Second Team All-American Lacrosse conference selection. As a sophomore, Laura just continued to shine earning 2nd team All-region from the IWLcA (Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Association) and she made the ALc Honor roll. In 2005, Laura kept progressing and was elected as First Team All-region and Second Team All-American from inside lacrosse, Womenslacrosse.com Second Team All-American, IWLcA Second Team All-American and in 2005 and 2006 she was awarded Big Ten Academic All-American. And in her senior year, along with her second national championship, Laura was awarded IWLcA First Team All-region.

Laura now teaches Spanish at Bc High and is also one of the coaches for the Boys’ La-crosse Team. She is also running develop-mental lacrosse clinics for any girls that are interested in improving their skills for their upcoming seasons. Her other hobbies in-clude running, yoga and playing in various adult leagues to keep her competitive juices flowing. Laura now resides in the town she grew up in, Hingham mA., and is engaged to her fiancé’ Brian who is also a Hingham na-tive. They are planning their beautiful wed-ding day in July 2012!

Shawna was a standout 3-sport athlete while at Thayer – playing soccer, basketball and lacrosse. During the soccer season, Shawna dominated – making the varsity team as an eighth grader and earning All-League awards in 1991 and 1992, and was selected to the Bay State games in 1991. Shawna played varsity basketball in 1990, ’91, and ’92 and helped lead those teams to many successful seasons – earning All-League Honorable mention honors in 1991, and in 1992 was crowned ISL All-League and was elected 1st team All-new England in the same year. She also played varsity lacrosse for four years and was again awarded All-League in 1992 and was selected to play on the All new England Schoolgirl 1st team. In that same year she participated in the US Women’s President’s cup Tournament. Shawna was elected as a 3-sport captain her senior year and her dominance in all of these sports throughout her career at Thayer earned her the prestigious Ward Donner Award at graduation for academic and athletic excellence.

Athletics for Shawna continued at Division I colgate University where she played soccer her freshman year and then transitioned into cross-country and track & field in 1993 and 1994 where she thrived.

Shawna is now operating her own private practice in Plymouth, mA where she works with children, adolescents, and adults as a psychotherapist. Other hobbies of Shawna’s are biking, sailing, running and many other outdoor activities. Shawna lives with her husband chris of eleven years and their two daughters Abigail and Harper along with their dog Layla.

David was a talented two-sport varsity athlete at Thayer from 1988 to 1992 - competing in ice hockey and baseball. It was ice hockey where David proved himself to be one of the best players to ever enter the halls of Thayer Academy. He competed on the varsity team all of his four years in high school and earned captain’s honors in 1991-’92 season. In these same years David also racked up team mVP honors, was crowned All-ISL, was selected to the Patriot Ledger All Scholastic Team, was the recipient of the colin mcDonald award – given the mVP of the milton/Thayer series, and received the honorable ISL Flood Shield Award for his dedication and sportsmanship. Other magnificent accomplishments included his 41 points in his senior season, his selection to the 1991 USA select 17 team that played in Japan, and participating in the 1992 Junior Olympic Festival in Lake Placid, ny. On top of all of this, David was selected in the 9th round of the 1992 nHL Draft by the chicago Blackhawks.

David’s hockey career continued to blossom at Boston college, where he played from 1992 to 1996. Throughout his four years at Bc, David played in 144 games, tallying 72 goals and 58 assists. Due to his leadership and dominance at Bc, David was selected captain for the

’95-’96 season. In David’s senior year, he received the norman F. Dailey memorial Team mVP Award, was selected to the All Hockey East Team and was placed on the Hockey East All-Academic Team. David’s name is seen in many of the corridors of conte Forum as he finished 28th on the all-time points list and 13th on the career list for total goals.

After his years at Bc, David enjoyed playing professional hockey from 1996 to 2006. He played in the EcHL in the 1996–’97 season, the IHL from 1997 to 1999, the AHL from 1999 to 2004 and the UHL from 2004 to 2006. noteworthy awards that David earned throughout his professional hockey career were “AHL man of the year” in recognition of community Service from 2002 to 2004 for the Binghamton Senators and the Lowell Lock monsters community Service award in 2000, an IHL All Star in 1999, and a UHL All Star in 2005 and 2006.

David currently works as a marketing manager at massachusetts general Hospital and he is an nHL scout for the new york Islanders. He resides in needham with his wife Kristen and four children Bryn, maeve, Ty and Delaney.
