Walking through Limehouse, or even looking out from the DLR, you’ve probably noticed we’ve undergone a rather spectacular transformation recently. The new lease of life we’ve given our beautiful home is a fitting tribute to a building that’s 150 this year and which has been an acclaimed young people’s theatre for twenty years. So this autumn, we have several reasons to be celebrating and you’re invited to join us for an unforgettable season of shows and special events.

Following works to vastly improve and re-shape our interior, and thanks to an Arts Council Lottery Grant to extensively renovate the outside of our impressive Victorian building (originally opened as Limehouse Board of Works in 1864), we’re delighted to be showcasing the finished results with a day of special events for all the family on Saturday 27 September.

This day of celebration is just one of many free events that we’re running throughout the autumn, under the banner of ‘#LimehouseLandmark – celebrating the many stages of Half Moon’s home’, generously supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Other events include a special exhibition charting the history of the building with maps, old newspaper cuttings and photos, complemented with free family storytelling, as well as interactive activities in our foyer, including the chance to dress up in costumes and capture the moment in our Time Machine photo-booth.

In our gallery all autumn, we’re displaying a new photographic exhibition from David Mott entitled Around Half Moon, which will allow you to see East London in a whole new light with views from the dizzy heights of our roof! We’re also delighted to be participating in Open House London Weekend on 20 and 21 September, the perfect opportunity to delve into parts of the theatre not normally accessible to the public. #LimehouseLandmark ends on 6 December with our wonderful Youth Theatres performing a series of specially commissioned new plays about the building.

And of course, alongside all of these events, we’ve programmed our usual season of brilliant family theatre from some of the best artists and companies from around the country. Alongside pop-up books of every imaginable shape and size, beautiful shadow puppetry, interactive dance and ingenious storytelling, we’re also presenting a thrilling new play for teenagers called FREE, which will be touring the country after its run at Half Moon.

Get Involved!Why not join one of Half Moon’s Youth Theatres? It’s a brilliant way to explore drama, create performances and make lots of new friends at the same time. We have five groups that run during term time.

For Teachers and Schools Last year, Half Moon worked with around 20,000 young people in over 1000 Creative Learning sessions. We work with schools, colleges, children’s centres and community and youth organisations on a range of engaging projects. This includes curriculum-focused workshops, after-school activities and initiatives to encourage young people to get into theatre, as well as professional development for teachers.

FLOODS OF INK PRESENT

Up in the AtticJoin three children on an unforgettable bedtime adventure; a journey through the attic at the top of an old house. As they discover the delights and secrets hidden inside, they’re taken on a rollercoaster ride of story, song and surprise.

Up in the Attic is a story about co-operation, friendship and overcoming fears. A magical, melodious and interactive tale created through enchanting music and puppetry.

At the end of the performance, there’s an opportunity for the audience to meet the characters and share in the magic of the story.

Season Opening Join us for a day of special events celebrating the history of Half Moon’s beautiful Victorian building, which opened as Limehouse Board of Works 150 years ago. In 2014 we are also celebrating the building’s 20 years as a young people’s theatre. We will be bringing together all of the stories of the building’s heritage to share with our neighbours and friends. The day’s activities will include guided tours around the building and local area, and we will be showcasing the many different art forms we offer at Half Moon.

Open House LondonFor the first time in our 20 year history at 43 White Horse Road, we’re delighted to be participating in the 2014 Open House London.

Open House London, created and delivered by the independent non-profit organisation Open-City, is the capital’s largest annual festival of architecture and design. Now in its 22nd year, it is a city-wide celebration of the buildings, places and neighbourhoods where we live and work.

On both days we’ll be running free tours of our beautiful Victorian building every half hour, including our auditorium and backstage areas. We’ll also be running free children’s art and craft activities throughout the day.

Gallery @ Half MoonDuring the year, we display an impressive range of work, suitable for all ages. The art gallery is free to visit and is open during the theatre opening hours, with all work affordably priced. Beneath the artwork, there are chalkboards for visitors to make their own responses.

Around Half Moon offers a stunning collection of photography, headlining with a series of images of our newly refurbished building. The exhibition also includes beautiful vistas from our roof over East London with views of some of London’s iconic landmarks, as well as striking flora, birds and scenic photography.

Once Upon a SnowflakeLiza has gone missing and no-one knows where she can be. One thing’s for certain: those mysterious Winter Sprites that appear every winter have something to do with it. But how are they connected with Liza’s disappearance? Will they help to find her? And what is inside their strange white suitcase?

Follow Liza into a colourful whirlwind of stories and adventure, led by a tiny Sprite with a fascination for snowflakes. Using a captivating blend of shadow puppetry, storytelling and enchanting original songs, Paper Balloon present this funny, quirky and magical show.

FREEBy David Lane

How far would you run to find freedom?

A hard-hitting story of two teenagers, brought together through the dynamic discipline of free-running.

Kris and Zara share a city but can’t find a place to rest. Haunting memories mix with an uncomfortable present as they keep on running, unable to face the consequences of their pasts – unable to stop or think for even a moment.

When the practice of free-running starts to cage them in, Kris and Zara form an obsessive relationship with one another, their city and the sport they know is pushing them to the limits of what is safe. Twisting together the real and the imagined, FREE asks what we’re running away from and if we’re ever willing to stop and confront what we’ve left behind.

Inspired by his on-going work with young people, David Lane’s script has been developed in consultation with teenagers. FREE is his second commission with Half Moon following Begin/End.

It’s night time on Dartmoor and a cold wind whistles through the bracken and gorse. Deep in his castle, the Story Giant is dying. Through the centuries, he has gathered all the tales in existence. All, that is, except one. Tonight his very life relies on finding it.

Exploring folklore, myth and fairytales from around the world, join Shanty Theatre Company to meet ghosts, monsters, thieves, tricksters, dragons and homing chickens. Full of beautiful live music and singing, this is an unmissable adventure to find the last story on earth.

TELL TALE HEARTS & IMAGINATION STAGE (USA) PRESENT

Inside OutIt’s bedtime! But instead of getting ready for bed, two siblings use their imagination to turn their room into a wonderland of mess. After some exciting adventures, where a shirt becomes a fantastical creature, a sock dance rocks the wardrobe and a hat gets lost during a mountain rescue, they both discover the joy of turning things inside out!

Tell Tale Hearts return to Half Moon with this delightful, interactive and colourful show for the very young. There will be a free play session at the end of the show.

A group of people from the local community will research the many stages of our #LimehouseLandmark, curating a special retrospective exhibition with maps, old newspaper cuttings and photos, brought to life with free family storytelling sessions, where you’ll have the opportunity to hear tales from the building’s 150 year history. There will also be a chance to contribute your own memories of the building’s many stages. TUTTI FRUTTI AND YORK THEATRE ROYAL PRESENT

Princess and the PeaImagine a place where what you see is not what it seems, a secret place where the princesses don’t know they are princesses, a place where appearances can be deceptive. And a place where wind blows through the castle of secrets, blowing away the cobwebs, lifting high the royal mattress, ruffling feathers and unsettling all who live there.

In this fantastical new adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic tale, Mike Kenny and the highly inventive tutti frutti team create a funny, original and beautiful retelling of the familiar tale.

Half Moon presents is part of our Exchange for Change programme, which supports artists developing diverse work for young audiences by nurturing, mentoring and providing space to work.

In addition to these existing productions, we’re also currently working with other companies and artists, including Tangled Feet, Brolly, Mark Newnham and Fran Whyburn, to develop new shows.
