Short Synopsis

Dennis Buckstead has the hardest calling in his church. Not only has he been asked to coach a group of non-basketball players in his church, but the bishop has demanded that he lead the team to the Basketball Championship. Word from the “top” is this is the last season of church ball and Bishop Linderman isn’t about to have his team lose for the 20th year in a row in the last season of church ball history! What was supposed to strengthen the body, invigorate the mind and cultivate brotherly love seems to bring out the worst in these church-going ball players. Dennis must find a way to bring his team together and build unity along the way to win the championship or go down in church ball history as the worst team that ever played.

Summary

It’s the last season of church ball and Dennis Buckstead (ANDREW WILSON) has been asked by Bishop Linderman (FRED WILLARD) to lead a group of uncoordinated misfits to the Church Basketball Championships. For the last twenty years the competitive Bishop Linderman, who was suspended from coaching twenty years ago for violent behavior, has watched the Mud Lake team fail to make the Church Basketball Tournament. And now word from the “top” is that church ball will be cancelled, making this season Bishop Linderman’s last chance to see Mud Lake redeem itself. According to church headquarters, church ball has run off course; what was supposed to strengthen the body, invigorate the mind and cultivate brotherly love brings out the worst in these church-going ball players. But despite its bad reputation, Dennis is determined to magnify his calling and build a championship-winning team. To work with, he’s got the nerdy church clerk Gene (CLINT HOWARD), small-in-stature Charles Higgins (GARY COLEMAN), rebellious bad-mouth Mickey (ROSS BROCKLEY), donut eating Don Weaver (CHAD LONG), weak-hearted church janitor, Thurman (STEVE ANDERSON), and European football-loving foreigner Nader (SINA AMEDSON). This is hardly a championship-bound group. But in all hopeless situations there is a silver lining. And that silver lining is Moses Mahoney (THURL BAILEY), a seven-foot giant who teaches basketball to troubled kids downtown. Unfortunately for Dennis, this silver lining has a conscience; Moses declines any interest in playing ball with Mud Lake because he doesn’t feel Dennis’ intentions are right. So then Dennis focuses on “friend-shipping” the tall and burly Jeremiah Jones (STAN ELLSWORTH), a possible savior for the Mud Lake team who won’t play because of bad past experiences with church ball.

Dennis just wants a winning team – is that too much to ask! Not even the Bishop’s supposedly “divinely-inspired” book of basketball plays seem to be working. His moves, with names like “Red-headed step child” and “Gob Stopper,” seem to promote only more violence. And though most of Dennis’s players are more interested in starting brawls than playing ball, Dennis manages to start building team unity through community service and practice. In what is nothing short of divine intervention, Dennis turns a team of oddballs into a team of players. And along the way he mends relationships, creates friends and makes it to the Church Basketball Tournament. The only thing that stands in their way is the Crystal Hills team , featuring The Bracken brothers (CURT DOUSETT and LARRY BAGBY), the always conceited, always victorious lawyers. The last game of church ball is set to be the most important and potentially biggest brawl in church basketball history – winner takes all. And in Church Ball, it isn’t how you play the game . . . it’s whether you win or lose.

A Brief History of Church Basketball The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) implemented basketball at the beginning of the 20th century as a worthwhile recreational activity for its members. In1922 the first church basketball tournament was organized in Salt Lake City. Shortly after, the All-Church Basketball Tournament was implemented which brought teams from around the United States and beyond. “Tournaments were a huge part of church basketball,” said Paul Eagleston, a writer on the script. “Winning teams would play first in stake tournaments, then go on to regional tournaments and finally to the All-Church Basketball Tournament that was televised and heavily attended by church members.” Throughout this time the LDS church redesigned the architecture of their meetinghouses to include a full-size basketball court adjacent to the chapel. This allowed its members to host practices and games for church-sponsored teams. “Basketball was viewed as an effective way to cultivate fellowship among members of the church, and a natural method to reach out to potential converts,” said Eagleston. “In fact some of the LDS church’s missionaries were given special assignments to play basketball in foreign lands to build goodwill.” LDS church basketball flourished in the church and quickly expanded to youth and women teams as well. Unfortunately, as referred to in HaleStorm’s film, “church ball drifted away from what it was originally intended to be” and the All-Church Tournament was disbanded in the early 1970’s. Co-writer Stephen Rose explains, “Basketball is and was a very competitive sport that often brought out the worst in good, strong, LDS members. And the fact that this kind of unnecessary aggression and violence happened right next to the chapel where members worshipped is what makes this film humorous – and ironic.”

Production Notes

In early 2002, HaleStorm Entertainment released its first feature film, The Singles Ward, to an eager niche audience of the Mormon faithful anxious to see stories about them on the big screen. When conducting a press interview for the movie, director Kurt Hale half-jokingly mentioned that HaleStorm’s next movie would be “Church Ball,” a movie based on the (in)famous sport. Interest from several investing sources fueled HaleStorm to move forward on the project.

Page 10: HALESTORM ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS - man · PDF fileChurch Ball Short Synopsis Dennis Buckstead has the hardest calling in his church. Not only has he been asked to coach a group of

Hale began writing drafts and eventually began soliciting scripts for the film but could never nail down one he liked. “The subject is high in concept and low in story,” he kept saying. His partner Dave Hunter continued to press him on it. However, over time the project was shelved. Then in 2004 two writers who heard about the project decided to write a script and submit it to HaleStorm. Several other scripts were written, but Hale selected this one penned by Paul Eagleston and Stephen Rose that juxtaposed the violent play of present day with the church’s early intentions with basketball. “I really wanted to infuse the actual history into the final product,” said Eagleston. “Church Basketball, as I knew it, was so different from what the original intentions of the Church-sponsored sports were. Where the Church had originally intended for the sport to cultivate brotherly love, promote good health and invigorate the mind, the sport evolved into one of the most competitive and violent activities. It totally went against the Church leaders’ original intentions.” Hale adapted the script to match the style of earlier HaleStorm films, though he decided to make a break from content that was exclusive to a Mormon audience. Hale put his own spin on the story and ended up with what is now, Church Ball. Hale knew he wanted an interesting cast of characters and knew he would also have to draw from an out-of-state talent pool to get what he wanted. “People always ask me why I use the same people in all of my movies. The fact is these are the best actors Utah has to offer. Not only do they make my job easy, but many of them are now friends,” said Hale. “You’ll recognize a few faces in Church Ball, but definitely not as many as in previous films. A Los Angeles casting agent was put to work on getting Hale the biggest bang for his buck. “I made a wish list and sent it down,” Hale remembers. “I was surprised that several of them replied immediately that they were interested—not because it was an inferior script, but that Hollywood talent would be interested in doing an LDS picture.” But Fred Willard, notable actor in films like Anchorman and Waiting for Guffman, was interested in the LDS film. “This movie is quite a funny script. It was sent to my home. My wife said, ‘You got a very strange script, it’s a Mormon movie.’ I said, ‘a Mormon movie?’ I thought it would be about religion and people flying around with wings. But she said, ‘It’s a very funny movie’. So I read it and I said, ‘Boy it is a funny movie’, and I love my character.” An interesting thing began to take place however. With notable talent signing on, HaleStorm thought it prudent to “water out” most of the LDS-inclusive

Page 11: HALESTORM ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS - man · PDF fileChurch Ball Short Synopsis Dennis Buckstead has the hardest calling in his church. Not only has he been asked to coach a group of

jokes that has given them their brand. Not only would this prove wise for foreign sales interest, but domestic premium stations such as HBO has shown preliminary interest. “There’s no reason we should make this film only for Mormons. Most, if not all religions have some sort of church sponsored sports program,” says Hunter. “If those people are interested in playing basketball, chances are, they’ll be interested in watching a movie about church sponsored basketball.” “The second script they sent me was a little less aimed at a purely Mormon audience, which I think is a good idea, because it’s a wonderful film,” said Willard. “I think it can have a very wide audience.” Gary Coleman, who plays one of the Mud Lake team members agrees. “It’s more of a universal Christian messaged film. They’re going for a larger commercial audience…I guess this film will appeal to Mormons, Christians, Catholics, Protestants, Baptists, and Presbyterians alike.” Casting for the remaining characters only took one week, a nearly impossible turnaround for any film. HaleStorm signed Andrew Wilson, known for his roles in movies like Bottle Rocket and Zoolander, signed on as the lead. “I wanted the reluctant hero-type. Andrew is that for sure,” says Hale. Wilson found his “reluctant hero character quite interesting. “I think that Dennis is kind of a nice guy, sort of a family man… but he’s a little bit passive. He uses church ball as an outlet for his aggressions, but through church ball he gains a little bit more confidence. He’s an interesting, sort of funny character.” To balance out the passivity of character Dennis, Church Ball leans on the character of loud mouth Mickey Morgan. Dave Hunter knew exactly who he wanted for the role. “I wanted that crazy dude from the Holiday Day Inn commercials in the show ,” says Hunter, “and come hell or high water I was going to get him.” That crazy man is Ross Brockley. We didn’t have to go to Hell to find him, but just about as far—Nebraska. Hunter said “We had to promise Ross we’d take care of his chickens while he was filming in Utah, so we called an intern and said, “Guess where you’re going…?” “I think Ross was happy. The intern only killed a few of the chickens.” Clint Howard was chosen for the role of Gene, the slightly dorky church clerk. Howard loved the idea of the film and told Kurt he was “in.” “The whole concept of these very mild-mannered Mormons getting out on the basketball court who then start acting like jungle ball maniacs is just plain funny. I hope that people enjoy the movie and get a few laughs out of it…we’re just hoping to entertain for an hour and a half or so.”

Because of budgetary constraints and the fact that their once modest budget was escalating slightly because of the signed on talent, production had to be reduced to eighteen days. “They wanted me to shoot a sports film in two and a half weeks. I thought we were crazy… I still do,” quips Hale. Production would be rigorous and Hale knew immediately he would need a Hollywood veteran to help pull it off. William Webb, director of photography for the hit CBS show, NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service, was perfect for the job. Long-time friend of Hale and Hunter (and more importantly a steady-cam operator who understands HD) Webb also thought their shooting schedule for the production was too tight. “I knew these guys had drive, but eighteen days for any film is crazy. And they wanted to shoot a basketball film!” remembers Webb. In the end Webb proved to be the dynamic that made the show work. Most of Church Ball was shot steady-cam. Several of the on-court basketball setups used multiple cameras—one in particular used five. The film uses two primary formats, 35mm film and HD. Because HD tape is so much cheaper than film stock, Hale was able to shoot 60% more footage of the actual basketball games than he would have been able to using 35mm. “To save money, we knew we had to go HD. I needed the coverage and film wasn’t an option,” says Hale. “But I would be surprised if anyone notices.” “I really admire Kurt’s never-say-die enthusiasm,” said Clint Howard, who plays Gene in the movie. “HaleStorm takes a very guerilla approach to filmmaking. Kurt was always very enthusiastic and has an idea for what’s funny… I think he’s going to make it as a film director.” “Actually all the people up there were great. I would have no qualms coming up here from either side of the camera, using this same crew and the same people and making a picture, adds Howard.” Church Ball represents the fifth project directed by Hale and the eighth produced by Hale and Hunter. “We’re hoping this is the start of bigger things,” says Hunter. The talent, both in cast and crew, and the fact that we’re making comedy that’s not dependant on inside jokes is refreshing. We’re looking forward to a future of this type of independent filmmaking.”
