    It is now three monthssince a major earthquakehit Haiti, measuring 7.0 onthe Richter scale.

    This was the strongestearthquake that Haiti hadexperienced in more than200 years.

    An estimated 250,000

    people died (about thepopulation of Rotherham)and more than 1.5 millionpeople lost their homes.

    The situation now

    The earthquake destroyed90 percent of schools inPort au Prince.

    Makeshift schools havebeen built and, now that

    Easter is over, children arestarting to go back toschool.

    The schools must bereopened, children have togo back to their studies asquickly as possible.

    But this is also the rainyseason, bringing more

    problems for people whohave lost almosteverything.

    Heavy showers fall everyday and can collapsetents and turn the campgrounds into mud baths.

    Despite the rains, ourpartners, Caritas, have

    been distributing food to7,200 families living inthe Ptionville Club camp,Port au Prince.

    Caritas efforts havefocussed on ensuring thatthe communitiesthemselves share fully inthe distributing of food.

    Through cash for workschemes, people can helpdistribute food and earn awage at the same time.

    Each family of six

    receives an 80 kiloration of food that willlast them for a month.

    Ptionville Club with herparents and five sistersand brothers the dayafter the earthquake.

    This food has come justin time. Now we cansurvive for a bit longer.

    Caritas are providingmeals for 1.5 millionpeople, trucking in 30,000gallons of clean water to

    four camps every day,building latrines andgiving out hygiene kits,jerry cans and waterpurification kits.

    In addition, Caritas child

    protection staff helpmore than 2,000 childrenin five locations withcounselling.

    It is difficult to get thechildren to talk directlyabout what they havegone through. When wefirst see them, they areshy and silent. Often,

    they will stand in thebackground.

    Haitian determination

    Robert Cruikshank fromCAFOD recently met a Haitianvolunteer called Flaubert inPort au Prince.

    Flaubert had been given workdigging but, the morning aftera conversation with Robertabout sanitation, he arrived atcamp with a full set of

    technical drawings of latrines,sketched by torchlight in hismakeshift shelter. He was adraughtsman by trade.

    We managed to setup a regular watersupply and built five

    latrines but the work,of course, willcontinue.

    330 buys a tent for six people100,000 people have received tents or tarpaulin

    25 buys a basic hygiene kit for a family

    350,000 people have been provided with healthcare including surgeries, trauma care and healthkits
