initial quake But cancelled again 2 weeks later tsunami hit small fishing

town caused by small earthquakes.

DAMAGE TO INFRASTRUCTURE Vital Infrastructure damaged or

destroyed The airport and harbor were damaged

which stopped immediate rescue operations

Streets were blocked Communication systems broke down

HELP WAS NEEDED Humanitarian aid, Pledging funds Dispatching rescue Medical teams, engineers and support

personnel. Confusion over who was in charge, air

traffic congestion, and problems with prioritization of flights further complicated early relief work.

CONDITIONS IN THE AFTERMATH Slept in streets, cars or on pavements Houses collapsed 1-3 days after actual

earthquake because they don’t have building codes

STATUS OF RECOVERY 98% of the rubble was still not cleared
