DANIELLE KEASLINGDanielle Keasling believes continu-ing education is the key to becoming a master at the craft of hairdressing. “I have put in thousands of hours honing my skills at academies, classes, hair shows and working with clients,” Ke-asling says. She owns Salon Karma in Bluffton, South Carolina and her passion for session work has earned her covers of MODERN SALON and Peluquerias Spain, along with several consumer publications. Most recently, Keasling guided her salon team to a national win in the Oribe Backstage Inspiration Chal-lenge. “It’s such a reward to see those you have mentored succeed,” Keasling says. “They inspire me every day, and I hope I still inspire them.” See Metal Heads starting on page 120.

Backstage Miami: La Fama, held last June, took stylists on a journey through Oribe’s Latin influences. Oribe followed up the event with the Backstage Inspi-ration Challenge, inviting stylists to recreate the inspiration and passion they felt in Miami in an original salon team photoshoot. More than 50 salons partici-pated and the winner was Danielle Keasling and her team from Salon Karma of Bluffton, South Carolina.

“When you submit photos to a contest that represents one of the world’s most influential and best editorial hair stylists of all time, you better be on your game,” Keasling says.

As inspiration Keasling used the “Chupacabra,” the legendary cryptid, a small bear-sized blood-sucking animal, which was highlighted in Oribe’s Backstage Miami venue. “We spun off of this original theme and created a sci-fi based theme of beautiful woman from another world, our guardians of the galaxy,” she says.

The ’80s introduced a subculture of hair and fashion encouraged by heavy-metal music. It was this de-cade of over-the-top texture, geometric shapes and mohawks that inspired editorial hair stylist Danielle Keasling as she created these fi nishes.

I took this collection back to that era, but with a modern glam twist, by creating micro crimped texture and soft wave patterns. ”— Danielle Keasling

Keasling worked with two different textures in each model’s hair for a fuller, denser look. “I wanted the two textures to clash, yet harmoni-ously fi t together creating textural interest at any angle.”

  • I thought this collection would be best in black and white. I wanted people to see the beauty fi rst and then relate to the era. I didn’t want to cloud their image with neon lights and mismatched prints. ”— Danielle Keasling
