information of Hasekura haiku contest. Details can be foundbelow. The deadline is approaching quickly, so please makeyour submission soon if you would like to participate.

As a Japanese who grew up in Japan, the life of Hasekura, aChristian samurai from Sendai, interested me. I believe ittook him 3 years to reach Spain and be baptized. I imagined ayoung man from an isolated island country fascinated witheverything he saw and experienced in Europe. When hereturned to Japan, the Shogun Government in Edo (nowTokyo) forbade practicing Christian religions, and he died twoyears later from a broken heart. According to Wikipedia,Hasekura's oil-painting portrait is the oldest oil-paintingwhose subject is Japanese. When you have a chance to visitSendai, you can see it at the Sendai City Museum (I believe). A couple of years ago, I wrote the following haiku inJapanese: 喜望峰回りで着きし宝船kibÙhÙ mawari de tsukishi takarabune a tiny ship the Seven Gods on the board arrived via the Cape of Good Hope 'takarabune' (literal translation is 'treasurer ship') is aJapanese New Year's kigo.

How much thought have you given to whether thereis life after death? Some religions, like Christianityand Hinduism, posit the existence of heaven andreincarnation, while others are silent on thequestion. Those not guided by faith are inclined torelegate this haunting mystery to the outermostmargins of their lives. In these pages, contributorsfrom around the world have trained their poetic eyeon this all-important quest. Relying on the power ofintuition and creative imagination, the poets in thiscollection give us a glimpse into the great mysteryof life after death. Suspend your skeptical mind andaccompany the poets here on the adventure intothe afterlife; you may not only be surprised, butforever changed.

Haiku Contest Commemoratingthe Europe-Japan

400-Year Relationship

(The 3rd Japan"Tsunenaga Hasekura" Haiku Award)

The year 2015 can be considered as the 400th anniversaryof the encounter between Europe and Japan, and the startof their close relationship.

In 1613, asamurai of the Sendai Clan, TsunenagaHasekura, was ordered to go to Europe by his lord,Masamune Date. The Tokugawa Shogunate which at thattime employed English and Dutch as retainers, helpedMasamune to build the ship to go abroad. After travelingto Spain and France, Hasekura landed in October 1615 inItaly and was in November 1615 received by Pope Paul Vin Rome. He also visited Florence and around March 121616 left for Spain from Genoa.

To commemorate this history, we, the organizingcommittee of the Japan "Tsunenaga Hasekura" HaikuAward, will hold a haiku contest to encourage a closerrelationship through haiku between Europe and Japan. InMarch 2016 we will hold an award ceremony in Tokyo tocommemorate Tsunenaga Hasekura's trip to Europe. At thesame time we would like to thank all Europeancountriesfor their valued support to the Tohoku regionwhich suffered the earthquake and tsunami disaster. March11 2016 will be exactly five years after the disaster.
